CHAPTER 2: THE NAME INSIDE THE BAG

CHAPTER 2: THE NAME INSIDE THE BAG

Victoria Hale's fingers tightened around the designer handbag.

"It belongs to me," she snapped.

Security continued pulling the little girl across the polished marble floor.

Yet Lily refused to release the strap.

"It isn't yours," she repeated.

The entire hotel lobby watched.

Business executives paused beside the elevators.

Tourists lowered their phones.

Even the concierge stopped speaking.

Victoria forced a smile.

"This child obviously stole it."

"Take her outside."

One security guard reached for Lily's wrist.

Then the little girl quietly asked,

"Have you looked inside?"

Victoria hesitated.

"What?"

"The inside pocket."

Her calm voice unsettled everyone.

Victoria laughed nervously.

"I don't need to inspect my own handbag."

"But you should."

Silence.

A hotel manager stepped forward.

"Perhaps we should verify ownership, ma'am."

Victoria reluctantly opened the bag.

Designer wallet.

Cosmetics.

Car keys.

Everything appeared normal.

Then the manager pointed toward a hidden zippered compartment.

"I don't think you've opened that one."

Victoria frowned.

"I've never noticed it."

She unzipped the compartment.

Inside lay an old photograph.

A tiny silver music box key.

And a faded birth certificate.

The name printed across the top froze every person nearby.

Lillian Grace Carter.

Victoria slowly looked up.

The little girl whispered,

"My real name is Lillian."

"My mommy called me Lily."

Color drained from Victoria's face.

Because twenty years earlier...

That exact handbag had disappeared on the same night her younger sister, Amelia, vanished without a trace.
