Chapter 2: The Unexpected Visitor

Chapter 2: The Unexpected Visitor

Three weeks later, I sat alone in a rehabilitation center.

Marcus had called twice.

Julia hadn't called at all.

Neither had visited.

But someone else had.

Every single day.

A young nurse named Emma.

She wasn't family.

She wasn't obligated.

Yet she always found time to sit with me.

One afternoon she asked gently,

"Do you have anyone helping with your cottage?"

I smiled sadly.

"Not really."

Emma hesitated.

Then she said something unexpected.

"My husband is a contractor."

Within days, volunteers from her church were repairing my stairs.

Installing handrails.

Fixing loose flooring.

Making the cottage safe again.

I cried when I saw the photographs.

Not because of the repairs.

Because strangers cared more than my own son.

A month later, I received another surprise.

A letter from my attorney.

For years, I had quietly accumulated investments.

Nothing extravagant.

But enough.

Enough to leave behind something meaningful.

The attorney asked if I wanted to update my estate plan.

For the first time, I seriously considered it.

Not out of revenge.

Out of clarity.

Because inheritance is not a reward for shared DNA.

It is a reflection of values.
