Chapter 1 — The Boy Who Called Her Mother

Chapter 1 — The Boy Who Called Her Mother

“Mommy!”

The little boy's voice cut through the music.

Sarah froze.

For one impossible second, the ballroom disappeared.

The crystal chandeliers.

The orchestra.

The hundreds of wealthy guests dressed in black and gold.

The champagne glasses.

The whispered conversations.

Everything vanished.

There was only one voice.

One child.

One word.

“Mommy!”

Sarah turned.

Leo was running toward her.

His small black shoes slipped slightly against the polished marble floor, but he didn't stop.

His blue eyes were filled with tears.

His arms were already stretched toward her.

“Mommy! You came back for me!”

Sarah's heart shattered.

“Leo…”

She dropped to her knees.

The moment he reached her, she caught him.

He threw both arms around her neck.

She held him so tightly that her hands trembled.

“I knew you would come back,” he whispered against her shoulder.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I promised you I would.”

Behind them, the ballroom had gone silent.

Then a woman's scream exploded through the room.

“GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF MY SON!”

Sarah's body stiffened.

She slowly turned.

Victoria Vance stood at the top of the marble staircase.

Her emerald evening gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers.

Her diamond necklace was worth more than most people's houses.

Her perfectly styled blond hair hadn't moved.

But her face—

her face was pure fury.

Victoria stormed toward them.

Two security guards followed.

Sarah immediately stood, keeping Leo behind her.

Victoria pointed at her.

“You.”

Sarah's voice was quiet.

“Victoria.”

“You have some nerve coming into my home.”

“This isn't your home.”

Victoria laughed.

“Everything in this house belongs to my family.”

Her eyes moved to Leo.

Then back to Sarah.

“Especially him.”

Leo clung to Sarah's dress.

“Mommy…”

Victoria's face twisted.

“Don't call her that.”

Leo looked frightened.

Sarah placed a protective hand on his head.

“Don't speak to him like that.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“He is my son.”

Sarah looked at her.

“No.”

The word echoed through the ballroom.

Victoria's eyes widened.

“What did you say?”

Sarah swallowed the pain rising in her throat.

“I said he isn't your son.”

A murmur moved through the guests.

Someone whispered:

“Who is she?”

Another voice answered:

“The former nanny.”

A third laughed quietly.

“She's actually trying to claim the Vance heir?”

Victoria's expression became almost triumphant.

“You hear that?”

She gestured toward the guests.

“Everyone knows who I am.”

Sarah said nothing.

Victoria stepped closer.

“And everyone knows who you are.”

She looked Sarah up and down.

“A servant.”

Sarah's fingers tightened around Leo's hand.

“I used to work for your family.”

“Exactly.”

Victoria smiled.

“You were paid to care for my son.”

Sarah's eyes hardened.

“I was his mother.”

Victoria slapped her.

The sound cracked through the ballroom.

Several guests gasped.

Leo screamed.

“Mommy!”

Sarah stumbled sideways.

For a moment, she tasted blood.

Victoria raised her chin.

“Never call yourself his mother again.”

Sarah slowly turned her face back.

Her cheek burned.

But she didn't cry.

She had cried enough.

For three years.

Three years of empty rooms.

Three years of searching.

Three years of being told that her son was dead.

Three years of believing the most precious thing in her life had been taken from her forever.

Tonight, she had finally found him.

And she wasn't leaving without him.

Arthur Vance stood near the grand piano.

He hadn't moved since Leo called Sarah “Mommy.”

He was Victoria's husband.

The head of the Vance family.

A billionaire businessman whose name appeared on hospital wings, university buildings, and political donor lists.

For years, Arthur had been known as a man who could make problems disappear.

Tonight, however, he looked terrified.

His eyes were fixed on Sarah.

Then Leo.

Then Victoria.

Victoria noticed.

“Arthur.”

He didn't respond.

“Arthur!”

He finally looked at her.

“What?”

“Tell security to remove her.”

Arthur remained still.

Victoria frowned.

“What are you waiting for?”

Arthur looked at Sarah.

Then at Leo.

His voice was low.

“Don't touch her.”

Victoria stared.

“What?”

“I said don't touch her.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Victoria's face changed.

“Arthur, what is wrong with you?”

He reached inside his jacket.

Pulled out a white envelope.

Sarah saw the seal.

A state crime laboratory.

Her heart began pounding.

Arthur looked at Victoria.

“We need to talk.”

Victoria laughed nervously.

“About what?”

Arthur held up the envelope.

“About Leo.”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“Arthur…”

He opened the envelope.

“There was a DNA test.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“Two weeks ago.”

Victoria's voice dropped.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because I found inconsistencies in Leo's medical records.”

Sarah stopped breathing.

Arthur looked at her.

Then at Leo.

Then back at Victoria.

“The results came back yesterday.”

Victoria stepped backward.

“Arthur, don't.”

His voice became louder.

“Leo is not your biological son.”

The ballroom erupted.

Gasps.

Whispers.

Questions.

Victoria shook her head violently.

“No.”

Arthur opened the report.

“His biological mother is Sarah Bennett.”

Sarah's knees nearly gave way.

Leo looked up at her.

“Mommy?”

Sarah pulled him close.

Arthur continued.

“The DNA match is conclusive.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You're lying.”

“The laboratory is the state crime laboratory.”

“You had no right!”

“I had every right.”

Arthur's voice broke.

“Because someone stole this child.”

Victoria looked around.

Her eyes searched desperately for support.

“Arthur, please.”

She lowered her voice.

“Think about our reputation.”

Arthur stared at her.

“Our reputation?”

“Yes.”

“Victoria…”

She stepped closer.

“Please.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Our reputation was built on a terrible crime.”

Victoria went completely still.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered across the floor.

Arthur looked at the guests.

Then at the police officers who had just entered through the main doors.

“No more lies.”

Victoria whispered:

“Arthur.”

He pointed toward the DNA report.

“This is over.”

The police moved forward.

Victoria immediately stepped back.

“No.”

One officer approached.

“Victoria Vance?”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“You are under arrest for illegal child trafficking, falsification of records, and unlawful custody of a minor.”

The ballroom erupted.

Victoria screamed.

“You can't arrest me!”

The officer reached for her wrists.

“Please cooperate.”

“Arthur!”

She turned toward her husband.

“You can't do this to me!”

Arthur's face was devastated.

“You did it to yourself.”

Victoria's eyes filled with hatred.

“You'll regret this.”

Arthur looked away.

“I already regret the last ten years.”

The handcuffs clicked.

Leo watched.

Sarah covered his eyes.

“You don't have to look.”

Victoria screamed as the police led her away.

“Leo!”

The boy turned.

“Leo, tell them you're my son!”

Leo shook his head.

“No.”

Victoria's face collapsed.

“I love you!”

Leo buried his face against Sarah.

“My mommy loves me.”

Victoria was dragged through the ballroom doors.

The doors closed behind her.

Silence.

Then Leo whispered:

“Is she gone?”

Sarah kissed his hair.

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

Sarah hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Leo looked up.

“Can we go home?”

Sarah's heart broke.

“Yes.”

But she had no home.

Not anymore.

Not after three years.

Arthur approached slowly.

Sarah immediately stepped back.

“Don't.”

Arthur stopped.

“I won't hurt you.”

“You helped her.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

His silence answered her.

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“For how long?”

Arthur swallowed.

“Three years.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Three years?”

“I found records.”

“Then why didn't you come for me?”

Arthur's face crumpled.

“Because I was afraid.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“You were afraid?”

“Victoria threatened to destroy you.”

“She already destroyed me.”

“I know.”

“She told everyone I abandoned my son.”

“I know.”

“She had the police looking for me.”

“I know.”

“She made me look insane.”

“I know.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Then why?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Because I thought I could fix it from inside.”

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

Sarah looked at Leo.

The little boy was holding the stuffed rabbit she had given him on his second birthday.

The rabbit was old now.

One ear was almost completely torn.

Sarah touched it.

“You kept that?”

Leo nodded.

“You gave it to me.”

“I thought it was gone.”

“I hid it.”

“Why?”

“Because it smelled like you.”

Sarah's eyes filled.

She pulled him into her arms.

Arthur looked away.

An hour later, the ballroom was empty.

The orchestra had stopped.

The chandeliers had been dimmed.

Police officers were still moving through the house.

Sarah sat in a private room with Leo asleep beside her.

Arthur stood by the window.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Sarah asked:

“Where is his birth certificate?”

Arthur turned.

“I don't know.”

“You're the father on it.”

“No.”

Sarah looked at him.

“What?”

“I'm not listed as his father.”

She frowned.

“Then who is?”

Arthur hesitated.

“That is the problem.”

“Tell me.”

“The name on Leo's original birth certificate isn't mine.”

Sarah stared.

“Whose name?”

Arthur looked at the sleeping boy.

“That's what Victoria never wanted anyone to discover.”

Sarah's heart began pounding.

“What does that mean?”

Arthur walked to the table.

Placed a second envelope in front of her.

Sarah stared at it.

“What's inside?”

“Leo's original hospital records.”

“I thought they were destroyed.”

“They were supposed to be.”

She looked at him.

“How did you get them?”

“Someone mailed them to me three weeks ago.”

“Who?”

Arthur shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Sarah opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of medical records.

She scanned them.

Mother:

Sarah Bennett.

Father:

Unknown.

Her breathing stopped.

“Unknown?”

Arthur nodded.

“That isn't all.”

She turned the page.

There was another document.

A handwritten note.

Sarah recognized the handwriting.

Her mother's.

Her dead mother's.

Sarah's fingers began shaking.

She read the words.

If Sarah ever finds Leo, tell her the truth about his father.

She looked at Arthur.

“My mother died before Leo was born.”

“I know.”

“Then how could she write this?”

Arthur didn't answer.

Sarah read the final line.

The man who fathered your son is the reason he was taken.

She stared at the page.

“What does that mean?”

Arthur's face went pale.

“I don't know.”

Sarah looked at him.

“You're lying.”

“I swear I'm not.”

Leo stirred in his sleep.

“Mommy…”

Sarah immediately reached for him.

“I'm here.”

He opened his eyes.

“Are we going home now?”

She smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

He wrapped his arms around her.

Then whispered:

“I knew you'd come.”

Sarah held him tightly.

“I promised.”

She looked at the document again.

The truth about Victoria was finally coming out.

But another secret had just opened.

Leo's father.

The man whose identity had been erased.

The man who had apparently been connected to the reason her son was stolen.

And somewhere in the city, someone already knew Sarah had found Leo.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message appeared.

Congratulations, Sarah. You found your son.

A second message arrived.

Now find his father before Victoria does.

Sarah's blood ran cold.

A third message appeared.

Because he is still alive.

Sarah stared at the screen.

Leo was asleep against her chest.

Arthur looked at her.

“What is it?”

Sarah slowly raised her eyes.

“Someone knows.”

“Who?”

She turned the phone toward him.

Arthur read the messages.

His face changed instantly.

“That's impossible.”

Sarah's voice was barely a whisper.

“What?”

Arthur looked at the sleeping child.

Then toward the locked ballroom doors.

“I know who Leo's father is.”

Sarah stood.

“Who?”

Arthur hesitated.

Then said the name.

And Sarah felt the entire world tilt beneath her feet.

“Your son was fathered by the one man Victoria spent three years trying to kill.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Who?”

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

“Me.”

The room went silent.

Sarah's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Arthur whispered:

“I am Leo's biological father.”

May you like

And suddenly the DNA report on the table no longer felt like the end of the story.

It felt like the beginning.
