CHAPTER 10 — The Night the Billionaires Fell

CHAPTER 10 — The Night the Billionaires Fell

The first gunshot had barely stopped echoing when the second shattered another window.

CRACK!

Glass exploded across the library.

Federal agents moved instantly.

"Protect the principals!"

Two tactical officers shielded Victoria and Edward behind the heavy oak conference table while others rushed to secure Charles Wolfe and Thomas Granger.

Director James Carter drew his sidearm.

"Find the shooter!"

Teams poured through the mansion.

The ballroom erupted into panic once again.

Guests who had only hours earlier been sipping champagne now crouched beneath tables, realizing the investigation had become something far more dangerous.

Outside...

The sniper was already gone.

A Sterling security drone tracked a black SUV racing through the forest road surrounding Blackwood Estate.

"Target moving east."

"Vehicle changing plates."

"Deploying counter-surveillance."

Edward listened through his earpiece.

"Don't chase."

Victoria looked at him.

"They're escaping."

Edward slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They want us chasing them."

He had seen too many ambushes in his lifetime to mistake desperation for strategy.

Minutes later, the library was secured.

No one had been hit.

The sniper had fired to distract, not assassinate.

Sophia crouched beside the broken window.

She found a small metal cylinder resting on the stone floor.

"This wasn't here before."

Director Carter accepted the evidence bag.

"A message?"

The forensic technician carefully unscrewed the cap.

Inside was a memory card.

Nothing else.

Meanwhile...

News of the lockdown spread across every major financial market.

Trading desks in New York.

London.

Singapore.

Dubai.

Tokyo.

The same headline flashed across thousands of screens.

FEDERAL INVESTIGATION EXPANDS INTO WOLFE HOLDINGS

Banks reacted immediately.

Credit lines were suspended.

Pending mergers frozen.

Insurance companies withdrew coverage.

Within an hour...

Billions of dollars in market value vanished.

At Wolfe Holdings headquarters downtown...

Executives gathered in the emergency boardroom.

The atmosphere was grim.

The company's chief financial officer looked pale.

"We've lost eighteen percent."

Another executive interrupted.

"Twenty-two."

The stock continued falling in real time.

The general counsel closed his laptop.

"We have a bigger problem."

Everyone turned toward him.

"The banks are invoking morality clauses."

Silence.

No corporation wanted to remain associated with a family under federal investigation for corruption and violent crime.

Charles Wolfe watched the financial news from inside the secured mansion.

For decades...

His company had seemed invincible.

Now it was collapsing hour by hour.

One board member called him.

"We need your authorization."

Charles answered weakly.

"For what?"

"To resign."

He closed his eyes.

"So that's how it ends."

The call disconnected.

Victoria stood beside the window overlooking the estate.

Emergency vehicles surrounded the mansion.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Floodlights illuminated the grounds.

She remembered Adrian laughing only hours earlier.

"You think anyone's coming to rescue you?"

Now...

Entire institutions had arrived.

Not to rescue.

To dismantle.

Director Carter returned from the forensic lab.

"The memory card has been decrypted."

Edward looked up.

"And?"

"It contains one video."

James connected it to the large screen.

The recording began.

A dimly lit office appeared.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded three years earlier.

Charles Wolfe sat across from Adrian.

Father and son.

The conversation sounded ordinary at first.

Then Charles pushed a folder across the desk.

"This company belongs to you one day."

Adrian smiled.

"I know."

Charles continued.

"But remember one thing."

"Power isn't inherited."

"It's protected."

The younger man nodded.

"I understand."

Charles leaned forward.

"No."

"You don't."

"You never protect power with kindness."

"You protect it by making people fear losing everything."

Victoria glanced toward Edward.

Neither spoke.

The recording continued.

Adrian asked quietly,

"And if someone refuses?"

Charles answered without hesitation.

"Then remove them."

The video ended.

Silence filled the room.

Charles stared at the frozen image of his younger self.

"I..."

His voice faltered.

"I never meant..."

Edward finished the sentence for him.

"...for him to believe you."

Charles lowered his head.

For the first time since the investigation began...

He wept.

Not because he had lost his fortune.

Not because his empire was collapsing.

But because he had finally seen the truth.

His greatest creation...

Had been his own destruction.

Sophia's tablet buzzed repeatedly.

She read the incoming reports.

"Victoria."

"What now?"

"The Securities Commission has frozen Wolfe Holdings."

"The Department of Justice has seized six subsidiaries."

"Three international partners have terminated their contracts."

She looked at another alert.

"And..."

Victoria waited.

"The board of directors just voted."

Edward quietly asked,

"Unanimously?"

Sophia nodded.

"They've removed Charles Wolfe as chairman."

Charles gave a hollow laugh.

"My own board."

Edward looked at him calmly.

"You taught them to survive."

"They're simply following your lesson."

Across the country...

Television stations interrupted regular programming.

Business analysts described the collapse as one of the fastest corporate failures in modern history.

Reporters stood outside Wolfe headquarters as employees carried personal belongings out of the building.

Some cried.

Others looked relieved.

Many admitted they had suspected wrongdoing for years but had been too afraid to speak.

Fear had built the empire.

Fear had kept it alive.

And now...

Fear was tearing it apart.

Late that evening, Director Carter received another secure call.

His expression hardened immediately.

Edward noticed.

"Another attack?"

James shook his head.

"Worse."

He turned the screen toward them.

The federal government had just identified the mysterious contact known only as KING.

Victoria leaned forward.

A photograph slowly appeared.

The room fell silent.

It wasn't a politician.

It wasn't a crime boss.

It wasn't anyone connected to the Wolfe family.

Edward stared at the face in disbelief.

"No..."

Victoria looked between the screen and her father.

"You know him."

Edward answered quietly.

"I buried him."

The photograph showed a man officially declared dead fifteen years earlier.

A man whose funeral Edward himself had attended.

Beneath the image appeared a single name.

Daniel Ashcroft

Founder of the Ashcroft Legacy Trust.
