CHAPTER 5 — The Cameras Never Stopped Recording

CHAPTER 5 — The Cameras Never Stopped Recording
The ballroom fell silent once again.
Not because of another arrest.
Not because of another revelation.
But because of a single sentence.
The biometric scanner is asking for your fingerprint.
Victoria stared at Sophia, searching her face for any sign that she had misunderstood.
"A hidden vault?"
Sophia nodded.
"The construction team never found it."
"The county blueprints don't mention it."
"The original architectural records don't mention it either."
Director James Carter frowned.
"So who built it?"
"No one knows."
Edward Sterling didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the grand staircase leading to the mansion's lower level.
"This house..."
he murmured.
"...has been keeping secrets long before tonight."
Charles Wolfe, still surrounded by federal agents, suddenly laughed.
It wasn't the arrogant laugh from earlier.
It sounded nervous.
Forced.
"I don't know what game you're playing."
"We've owned this estate for decades."
Edward looked at him.
"No."
"You believed you did."
Within minutes, a tactical team escorted Victoria, Edward, Sophia, Director Carter, and a forensic unit into the mansion's underground level.
The air grew cooler with every step.
Dust covered the stone walls.
The lower corridors hadn't been used in years.
Or so everyone thought.
One of the forensic specialists stopped beside an enormous wine rack.
"Here."
He pressed against a carved oak panel.
It didn't move.
Then he activated a thermal scanner.
Behind the wall...
There was empty space.
Almost twenty feet deep.
Sophia whispered,
"Someone built another room."
The technicians carefully removed the wooden panel.
Hidden beneath it stood a reinforced titanium door.
No handle.
No keypad.
Only a small biometric scanner glowing with a soft blue light.
Across its surface, a single message appeared.
AUTHORIZED DESCENDANT REQUIRED
Director Carter looked toward Edward.
"It recognizes your family."
Edward slowly shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Victoria.
"It recognizes hers."
Victoria stepped closer.
Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.
She raised her hand.
For a brief second, she hesitated.
Edward gently nodded.
"It's your choice."
Victoria placed her thumb on the scanner.
A soft tone sounded.
Nothing happened.
Then another.
The scanner pulsed brighter.
A calm computerized voice echoed through the corridor.
DNA CONFIRMED
WELCOME... VICTORIA STERLING
Massive locking bolts disengaged one by one.
The heavy door slowly swung inward.
Cold air drifted out.
Along with the scent of aged paper.
Not gold.
Not jewels.
Documents.
Thousands of them.
The room beyond resembled an underground archive.
Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.
Each filled with carefully labeled boxes.
Computer servers hummed quietly in the background.
Nothing appeared damaged.
Nothing appeared abandoned.
Someone had maintained the vault.
Recently.
Director Carter examined the dust on the floor.
"There are footprints."
Edward looked down.
"They're fresh."
Sophia crouched beside them.
"Less than forty-eight hours old."
The room wasn't a forgotten secret.
Someone had been here.
Victoria slowly walked toward the central desk.
A single monitor suddenly activated.
The screen displayed a security interface unlike anything anyone had seen.
No corporate logo.
No operating system.
Only one sentence.
THE CAMERAS NEVER STOPPED RECORDING
James looked confused.
"What cameras?"
Victoria's expression changed.
"The original surveillance network."
Edward turned sharply.
"I thought it was destroyed."
"So did I."
Sophia connected a forensic drive.
Within seconds...
Video files began appearing.
Their timestamps stunned everyone.
Twenty-two years.
Seventeen years.
Twelve years.
Five years.
Three days.
The system had never stopped recording.
Not for a single day.
Director Carter opened the oldest file.
The ballroom appeared on the screen.
The decorations were different.
The furniture older.
The guests unfamiliar.
Charles Wolfe looked decades younger.
Standing beside him...
Were several powerful politicians.
Corporate executives.
Foreign investors.
One of them slid a thick envelope across the table.
Charles accepted it.
Then quietly signed several documents.
James paused the recording.
"What year is this?"
The timestamp answered.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
The night Victoria's mother disappeared.
Edward's face hardened.
"Keep playing it."
The recording continued.
Voices became clearer.
One businessman whispered,
"Once Sterling refuses..."
"We move to phase two."
Charles nodded.
"The daughter?"
A second voice answered.
"She'll never inherit anything."
Victoria felt a chill spread through her body.
"They were talking about me."
More files followed.
Different years.
Different guests.
Different crimes.
Bribery.
Illegal contracts.
Witness intimidation.
Secret meetings with judges.
Payoffs to investigators.
Evidence disappearing after suspicious accidents.
Every conversation.
Every handshake.
Every betrayal.
Captured.
Preserved.
Hidden beneath the mansion all along.
James Carter stared at the endless archive.
"This isn't evidence."
Edward looked at him.
"No."
"It's history."
Upstairs...
The guests still trapped inside the ballroom waited anxiously.
Many believed the investigation was nearly over.
They were wrong.
Because beneath their feet...
The walls themselves had been watching for decades.
Sophia suddenly froze.
"Victoria..."
"What?"
She pointed toward the newest folder.
Its title read:
TONIGHT
Victoria opened it.
Hundreds of camera angles appeared instantly.
Every room.
Every hallway.
Every conversation since the gala had begun.
Then she noticed something strange.
One camera wasn't inside the ballroom.
It overlooked a private office on the third floor.
The timestamp showed only fifteen minutes earlier.
While everyone had been watching Adrian's arrest...
Someone else had entered the office.
The figure wore a black hood.
Their face remained hidden.
They unlocked a concealed safe.
Removed a single thin folder.
Then deliberately looked into the camera.
Slowly...
The stranger smiled.
And held up a white card with handwritten words.
YOU ARE ALREADY TOO LATE.
The recording ended.
Silence filled the underground archive.
Director Carter immediately spoke into his radio.
"Seal the third floor!"
Agents rushed upstairs.
But when they reached the office...
The window was open.
The safe was empty.
The intruder had vanished.
Leaving behind only one clue.
A silver chess queen.
Resting alone inside the vacant safe.
Victoria picked it up carefully.
Engraved beneath the base were four chilling words:
May you like
YOUR NEXT MOVE, HEIRESS.
