The police chief hurried in from the garden.
He looked irritated.
"What exactly is going on here?"
Richard finally smiled again.
"There you are."
The chief turned toward Arthur.
Then stopped.
Recognition spread slowly across his face.
"You..."
Arthur nodded once.
"It's been a long time."
The chief removed his sunglasses.
His posture changed completely.
"So it has."
The room fell silent.
Margaret whispered,
"You know him?"
"I do."
The chief looked directly at Richard.
"You should stop talking."
Richard laughed.
"Since when do you take orders from him?"
The chief answered quietly.
"Since long before I wore this badge."
Arthur had spent years living as an ordinary widower.
Very few people knew that before retiring, he had led a federal task force specializing in organized financial crime and public corruption.
