PART 3 — The Ring in the Drawer

PART 3 — The Ring in the Drawer

I couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breathe properly.

Every memory I had of my father suddenly felt like it had missing edges.

His calls.

His silence.

The way certain names were never spoken in our house.

Dante stepped closer—but stopped before invading me.

As if even now, he was asking permission.

“Ellie,” he said carefully, “when you were nine… did anyone ever tell you you were in the car with him?”

My throat went dry.

“No.”

A pause.

Then—

“You were.”

The room didn’t exist anymore after that sentence.

Just fragments.

Noise without meaning.

Daniel’s voice somewhere behind me, angry and distant.

Vanessa whispering something that sounded like panic.

But Dante’s voice held me in place.

“There was a second passenger,” he said. “A child survivor. The official report omitted her identity.”

My knees weakened slightly.

Dante’s hand tightened around mine just enough to steady me—not trap me.

“And your father,” he continued, “didn’t die instantly.”

That was the moment I knew.

Even before the next words came.

“He was speaking to someone after the crash,” Dante said.

“Calling a name.”

My lips parted.

“No…”

Dante nodded once.

“Yours.”

The room blurred.

My vision broke at the edges.

And then—

A small movement from Dante’s security man behind him.

A file was placed in Dante’s hand.

He didn’t open it.

Not yet.

May you like

He just looked at me.

Like he was waiting for me to decide how much truth I could survive.
