PART 4 — What He Really Chose

PART 4 — What He Really Chose

Daniel was still speaking, but it sounded far away now.

Like someone talking through water.

“You’re being played, Ellie. You’re letting him rewrite your life—”

But I wasn’t listening to Daniel anymore.

I was looking at Dante.

At the way he didn’t rush me.

Didn’t push the file into my hands.

Didn’t demand belief.

Just waited.

For years, I had been disposable to people who never hesitated.

And here was a man telling me the most dangerous thing of all:

That my life might have been watched longer than I knew.

“I didn’t protect you tonight because I care what they think,” Dante said quietly.

A pause.

“I protected you because someone tried to erase you once before.”

My voice came out barely audible.

“And you’re saying you’ve been watching me for seven years?”

“No.”

His expression tightened slightly.

“I’ve been looking for you.”

The distinction mattered.

Somehow more than everything else.

Behind us, Daniel finally tried one last time.

“This is ridiculous. Ellie, choose—me or this fantasy—”

But I didn’t turn.

For the first time that night, I didn’t look back at him at all.

Instead, I looked at Dante.

And I asked the only question that actually mattered.

“Why me?”

Dante held my gaze for a long moment.

Then—

“Because you were the only survivor of a truth powerful people paid to forget.”

A beat.

“And because they’re starting to remember you exist.”

The ballroom lights flickered once.

Somewhere near the entrance, someone shouted.

Security moved.

And Dante’s voice dropped into something darker—controlled, but no longer soft.

“Ellie,” he said, “if you come with me now… there’s no going back to the life you think you had.”

I looked down at my empty hand.

At the space where Daniel used to hold me.

At the ring still hidden in a drawer I hadn’t opened in months.

Then I looked back up.

And for the first time all night…

I made my own choice.

“Then don’t send me back.”

Dante exhaled slowly.

Almost like relief.

May you like

“Good,” he said.

And the doors behind us opened as if the night itself had been waiting for that answer.
