Chapter 3: A Husband's Choice

Chapter 3: A Husband's Choice
His mother folded her arms.
"We raised you better than this."
Daniel nodded.
"You did."
"You taught me that family takes care of one another."
He pointed toward Hannah.
"So why has my wife been serving everyone while nobody lifted a finger?"
No one answered.
Melissa rolled her eyes.
"It's just dishes."
Daniel walked to the sink.
He picked up a heavy cast-iron pan.
"Then it shouldn't take long."
He handed it to her.
Melissa didn't take it.
"I'm not washing that."
"Then you'll leave."
Everyone stared.
His mother laughed nervously.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"I'm completely serious."
He opened the front door.
"Anyone unwilling to respect my wife is welcome to find somewhere else to stay."
The smile disappeared from his mother's face.
"You'd throw your own family out?"
Daniel answered calmly.
"No."
"You chose to walk out the moment you treated my wife like a servant."
Hannah whispered,
"Daniel... please don't fight."
He gently held her hand.
"I'm not fighting."
"I'm protecting my family."
She looked confused.
"Aren't they your family too?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"They were."
He rested a hand on her belly.
