CHAPTER 15

CHAPTER 15
THE LAST THING ANNA LEFT
"Sophie!"
Ethan's voice tore through the darkness.
He ran forward.
His shoulder struck the stone wall.
"Turn on the lights!"
Richard found the emergency switch.
The tunnel flooded with pale white light.
Sophie was gone.
Anna was on the floor.
Daniel was bleeding against the wall.
And Ethan's father—
was nowhere.
Ethan grabbed Anna by the shoulders.
"Where is she?"
Anna looked at him.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I don't know."
"You were standing beside her."
"I know."
"You promised she'd be safe."
"I know."
"Then where is my daughter?"
Anna's voice broke.
"She was taken."
"By whom?"
She looked toward the tunnel.
"Your father."
Ethan stepped backward.
"Why?"
Anna shook her head.
"Because he needs her."
"For what?"
"The archive."
Ethan stared.
"She doesn't know anything."
Anna's expression changed.
"She knows more than you think."
They searched the tunnels.
Nothing.
No footprints.
No blood.
No signs of a struggle.
It was as if Sophie had simply disappeared.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small white ribbon lay on the floor.
Sophie's ribbon.
He picked it up.
"She left this."
Ethan took it.
His hands trembled.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Anna.
"Because she wanted us to follow."
Ethan stared at him.
"Follow where?"
Daniel pointed toward a narrow passage.
"That wasn't there before."
Richard looked at the stone wall.
"How did it open?"
Daniel smiled bitterly.
"Someone opened it from inside."
Ethan looked at Anna.
"Did you know about this?"
Anna nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of what we'd find."
Ethan looked at the passage.
"Then we're going."
The tunnel descended beneath the lighthouse.
The walls became older.
The stone was wet.
Every few meters, small metal doors appeared.
Some had names.
Some had numbers.
Some had nothing.
Then Ethan saw one.
17.
He stopped.
Anna came beside him.
"That's the room."
Ethan touched the door.
"Room 17."
"No."
Anna shook her head.
"This is the real one."
"Then what was the room in the mansion?"
"A decoy."
"Why?"
"To keep people away from this place."
Ethan opened the door.
Inside was a small room.
A desk.
A chair.
A tape recorder.
And hundreds of photographs.
Ethan stepped inside.
He recognized many of them.
His father.
Celeste.
Richard.
Jonathan.
Anna.
Himself.
Sophie.
But there were photographs of people he had never seen.
Children.
Dozens of them.
Each had a name.
A number.
A date.
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"What is this?"
Anna whispered:
"The replacement program."
Ethan stared.
"Children were trained to become other people."
"Yes."
"How many?"
"Forty-seven."
"How many survived?"
Anna looked away.
"Nine."
Ethan felt sick.
"Where are they?"
"Some escaped."
"Some?"
"The others were killed."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"My father did this."
"Yes."
"Celeste helped."
"Yes."
"Richard?"
"No."
"Daniel?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Anna looked at him.
"Jonathan."
Ethan froze.
"Jonathan?"
"He ran the program."
"Why?"
"Money."
"How much?"
"Enough to buy governments."
Ethan looked at the photographs.
Then he saw one.
A boy.
Six years old.
The photograph had been taken in a hospital.
The name beneath it was:
ETHAN CARTER — ORIGINAL
Ethan's blood ran cold.
He picked it up.
"This is me."
Anna shook her head.
"No."
He looked at her.
"Then who?"
"Your father's biological son."
Ethan stared.
The boy had his face.
But something was different.
The eyes.
They were darker.
Colder.
"Where is he?"
Anna's voice trembled.
"Dead."
"When?"
"Before you were born."
Ethan stared.
"Then who am I?"
Anna reached into her coat.
She removed an envelope.
"I've been carrying this for twenty years."
"Why?"
"Because I promised your mother."
Ethan's hands shook.
"My mother?"
"Your biological mother."
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
His name was not Ethan Carter.
It was:
LUCA MORETTI.
Ethan stared.
Anna whispered:
"You were born in Lisbon."
"Your mother was Lucia Moretti."
Ethan looked at Anna.
"That's you."
She nodded.
"My real name is Lucia."
He couldn't speak.
"You were my son."
The room seemed to disappear.
"You..."
Anna began crying.
"I gave you to the Carters."
"Why?"
"Because I was being hunted."
"By whom?"
"Your father."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted a child he could control."
Ethan's breathing became shallow.
"You gave me away."
"To save you."
"You let me believe I was someone else."
"Yes."
"You let everyone manipulate me."
"I tried to stop them."
"You failed."
Anna nodded.
"Yes."
Ethan turned away.
For the first time, he understood why Anna had always looked at him differently.
Not like a wife.
Not like a stranger.
Like a mother.
He whispered:
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because if you knew who you were, they would kill you."
"Who am I?"
Anna wiped her tears.
"You're not Ethan Carter."
"Then what am I?"
"You're Luca."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Luca."
The name felt unfamiliar.
But somewhere deep inside him—
it felt like home.
A sound came from the tape recorder.
It turned on by itself.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
Anna's voice.
But older.
Calmer.
Ethan looked at her.
"I didn't record that."
She shook her head.
The recording continued.
"If you're hearing this, then I'm dead or gone."
Ethan stared.
"Luca, if you have found this room, you finally know who you are."
Anna looked at Ethan.
He couldn't move.
"I need you to forgive me."
The recording paused.
Then continued.
"I lied to you because I had no other way to protect you."
"I let you believe you were Ethan Carter."
"I let the world believe you were the heir."
"But you were never the heir."
"You were the escape plan."
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
The recording continued.
"Your biological father was Gabriel Moretti."
Ethan froze.
"Gabriel."
Richard stared.
"That's impossible."
Anna's recorded voice continued.
"Gabriel was the one person your father's network could not control."
"He created the first resistance."
"He was murdered because he refused to surrender."
"Before he died, he gave me one instruction."
A pause.
"Save our son."
Ethan covered his mouth.
Anna's voice continued.
"So I did."
"I changed your identity."
"I placed you inside the Carter family."
"And I waited."
"I waited for the day you would become strong enough to destroy them."
Ethan looked at Anna.
"You knew."
She nodded.
The recording continued.
"But I made one terrible mistake."
Ethan leaned closer.
"I fell in love with Ethan Carter."
Silence.
"And when he died, I could not accept it."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"So I tried to save him."
"I failed."
"Instead, I saved the man who looked like him."
Ethan froze.
The recording continued.
"Luca, you are not Ethan."
"But that does not mean your life is a lie."
"You loved Sophie."
"She loves you."
"That is real."
Ethan began crying.
Then the final words came.
"And if you're listening to this..."
A pause.
"...then Sophie is already in danger."
The recording stopped.
Ethan stood motionless.
Then he heard a sound.
A child's voice.
"Daddy?"
He turned.
Sophie stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Unharmed.
Ethan rushed toward her.
"Sophie!"
She ran into his arms.
He held her tightly.
"Are you okay?"
She nodded.
"Grandpa brought me here."
Ethan froze.
"Where is he?"
Sophie pointed behind her.
"He said you would understand."
Ethan looked toward the corridor.
His father stood there.
Holding a gun.
But he wasn't looking at Ethan.
He was looking at Anna.
"You finally told him."
Anna stepped forward.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he deserved the truth."
Her former husband smiled.
"The truth?"
He laughed.
"Do you know what the truth is, Luca?"
Ethan stared at him.
"My name is Ethan."
"No."
The man shook his head.
"That's what they taught you."
Ethan held Sophie closer.
"I don't care."
"You should."
"Why?"
"Because the network is collapsing."
"Good."
"No."
His father looked toward the photographs.
"If the network collapses, thousands of people will be exposed."
"Then let them face justice."
"They won't."
"Why?"
"Because every government in Europe is connected to it."
Ethan stared.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
He tossed a small device onto the floor.
A screen activated.
Names appeared.
Politicians.
Judges.
Police chiefs.
Business leaders.
Military officials.
Then—
Ethan saw a name he recognized.
ROBERT CARTER.
His father's own name.
Below it:
STATUS: DECEASED.
Ethan frowned.
Then another name appeared.
ETHAN CARTER.
STATUS: ACTIVE.
He stared.
Then:
LUCA MORETTI.
STATUS: TERMINATED.
Ethan's heart stopped.
His father smiled.
"Do you understand?"
Ethan looked at Anna.
"What does this mean?"
Anna whispered:
"It means the world believes Luca Moretti is dead."
Ethan looked at Sophie.
"And Ethan Carter is alive."
His father nodded.
"Exactly."
Ethan understood.
If he revealed the truth—
he would disappear.
His identity.
His company.
His life.
Everything.
But Sophie would remain safe.
He looked at Anna.
"What do I do?"
She smiled through her tears.
"For the first time in your life..."
"...choose for yourself."
Celeste appeared behind Ethan.
A gun pressed against his back.
"Enough."
Ethan froze.
Celeste whispered:
"Give me the archive."
"No."
"Sophie dies."
Ethan looked at her.
"You've said that before."
Celeste tightened her grip.
"This time I'm not bluffing."
Anna stepped forward.
"Celeste."
"Stay back."
"You don't have to do this."
Celeste laughed.
"You always say that."
Anna's voice softened.
"It's over."
"No."
"Yes."
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
"You destroyed everything."
"I exposed the truth."
"You took Ethan."
"I saved him."
"You took Richard."
"I protected him."
"You took my family."
Anna shook her head.
"Your family was never yours to own."
Celeste's hand trembled.
Then a gunshot echoed.
Everyone froze.
Celeste fell.
Richard stood behind her.
His gun was smoking.
"Richard..."
Celeste looked at him.
"Why?"
Richard's face was full of tears.
"Because you lied to me my entire life."
She collapsed.
Ethan stared.
Richard lowered his weapon.
"I should have done it years ago."
Celeste was still breathing.
Barely.
Police sirens sounded above the lighthouse.
Ethan looked at Anna.
"You called them."
Anna nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
"I sent the evidence to every major news organization six hours ago."
Ethan stared.
"You knew this would happen."
"I hoped."
Richard looked at the photographs.
"It's over."
Anna shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Ethan.
"It has only begun."
By sunrise, the lighthouse was surrounded.
Police.
Investigators.
Journalists.
Helicopters.
The network's records were being copied.
Celeste was taken away alive.
Richard surrendered.
Jonathan was arrested at the airport.
Ethan's father disappeared before police reached the tunnel.
But he left one final message.
On the wall beneath Room 17.
YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR NAME.
YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR FACE.
YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
BUT YOU CANNOT CHANGE WHO YOU ARE.
Ethan stood before the words.
Sophie held his hand.
"Are you Ethan?"
He looked down at her.
He smiled.
"I don't know."
Sophie frowned.
"Then who are you?"
He knelt.
"My name is Luca."
She thought for a moment.
Then smiled.
"You're still Daddy."
His eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
She hugged him.
"Then that's enough."
Three months later, the Carter empire was gone.
The accounts were frozen.
The companies were dismantled.
The secret network was exposed.
Governments launched investigations.
Dozens of powerful people resigned.
Others were arrested.
The second ledger became evidence in the largest international corruption case in decades.
Richard testified.
Jonathan confessed.
Celeste was sentenced.
Ethan's father was never found.
But one mystery remained.
Anna.
She disappeared the night before the trial.
Ethan searched for her for weeks.
He found nothing.
Until one morning.
A letter arrived.
No return address.
Only his new name.
LUCA MORETTI.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Anna standing beside the ocean.
On the back were four words.
I DID WHAT I PROMISED.
Underneath:
I SAVED YOU.
And beneath that—
one final sentence.
NOW SAVE HER.
Ethan turned the photograph over.
On the front, Anna wasn't alone.
Someone stood behind her.
A little girl.
Not Sophie.
Another child.
A child from the photographs in Room 17.
One of the forty-seven.
Alive.
Ethan stared at the picture.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A frightened female voice whispered:
"Mr. Moretti?"
"Who is this?"
"My name is Elena."
"What do you want?"
"I found something in the archive."
Ethan sat up.
"What?"
"A file."
"About who?"
There was a pause.
"Your father."
Ethan's heart stopped.
"He's alive?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Elena's voice trembled.
"The file says he had another son."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Another?"
"Yes."
"Where is he?"
The line went silent.
Then:
"He's been living under your name."
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the ocean beyond his window.
Sophie was asleep upstairs.
Anna was gone.
Celeste was in prison.
Richard was waiting for trial.
The network had collapsed.
And yet—
the truth was still unfinished.
Ethan folded the photograph and placed it inside his coat.
For the first time, he wasn't afraid of what he would discover.
Because he finally understood something Anna had spent years trying to teach him.
A name could be stolen.
A memory could be altered.
A family could lie.
A life could be built on deception.
But love—
real love—
was the one thing nobody could erase.
Ethan walked upstairs.
Sophie was waiting for him.
"Daddy?"
He smiled.
"I'm here."
She reached for his hand.
He took it.
And together, they walked toward the morning.
Not as Ethan Carter.
Not as Luca Moretti.
But simply as father and daughter.
And somewhere beyond the horizon, Anna watched the sunrise.
For the first time in twenty years—
May you like
she was free.
THE END
