Chapter 6 – The Secret Inside The Mansion

THE DAUGHTER HE PROMISED TO PROTECT

Chapter 6 – The Secret Inside The Mansion

The Vale mansion had always been a symbol of success.

To the outside world, it represented everything Marcus Vale had achieved.

The grand entrance.

The endless halls.

The expensive artwork.

The perfect gardens.

A place where powerful people gathered.

A place where business deals were made.

A place where everyone believed happiness lived.

But Marcus knew the truth now.

A beautiful house could hide ugly secrets.

And sometimes the most dangerous things were not found outside the walls.

They were hidden inside them.

After discovering the connection between Cassandra and someone close to his family, Marcus stopped trusting appearances.

Not employees.

Not friends.

Not even memories.

Because he had learned the hardest lesson of his life.

The people closest to you were often the ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.

For years, Marcus believed the mansion was safe.

After Sophia died, he kept it because of Lily.

Every room carried memories.

The kitchen where Sophia used to cook.

The library where she read bedtime stories.

The garden where Lily took her first steps.

He could never bring himself to leave.

It was the last place where his family had existed together.

But now...

He wondered how much of that place had been real.

The investigation team Marcus hired continued searching.

Three days after their first report, the lead investigator, Daniel Cross, arrived at the mansion.

He carried a thin folder.

Too thin.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"You found something."

Daniel nodded.

"Something that was hidden very carefully."

Marcus looked toward Lily's room.

"Is she safe?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

"The mansion has been accessed more times than you knew."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Someone entered the house before Cassandra moved in."

Silence.

"Who?"

Daniel opened the folder.

"We are still investigating."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"But we found evidence of unauthorized access."

The first document was a security report.

Marcus studied it.

The dates made his stomach tighten.

Because the access happened during the months after Sophia's death.

The months when Marcus was barely functioning.

The months when he trusted everyone around him.

"Someone entered my home while I was grieving."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"That is what we need to find out."

Marcus looked at the report again.

Then he saw something.

A name.

A security employee.

A person he remembered.

"Thomas."

Daniel looked up.

"You know him?"

"He worked here for years."

Marcus paused.

"He was responsible for the security system."

Daniel nodded.

"Then you should know something."

"What?"

"Thomas disappeared two weeks ago."

Marcus felt a familiar cold feeling.

The same feeling he had when he watched Cassandra hurt Lily.

The feeling of realizing something terrible had been happening right in front of him.

Thomas had worked for the Vale family for twelve years.

He knew the mansion.

He knew the security.

He knew the family's schedule.

He knew when Marcus traveled.

He knew when Sophia was alone.

He knew everything.

And Marcus had trusted him.

That evening, Marcus walked through the mansion alone.

For the first time, he did not see memories.

He saw evidence.

The hallway cameras.

The locked rooms.

The hidden corners.

Every place someone could have watched them without being noticed.

He entered Sophia's old office.

The room had remained untouched since her death.

Marcus rarely came inside.

It hurt too much.

Her books were still there.

Her favorite chair.

Her handwritten notes.

The perfume bottle she never finished using.

For years, Marcus believed keeping this room unchanged was a way of preserving her memory.

Now he wondered if he had preserved something else.

A secret.

He searched carefully.

Not because he wanted to invade Sophia's privacy.

Because he needed answers.

After an hour, he found something unusual.

A loose wooden panel behind a bookshelf.

Marcus froze.

Sophia had never mentioned it.

He removed the panel.

Behind it was a small hidden compartment.

Inside was an envelope.

His heart began racing.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Sophia.

He opened it carefully.

Inside were several documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Notes.

And one sentence written at the top.

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

Marcus stopped breathing.

The documents revealed something he never knew.

Sophia had been investigating someone.

Someone close to the family.

She had noticed unusual financial activity.

Missing company funds.

Private meetings.

Strange behavior.

She had started asking questions.

And someone had noticed.

Marcus continued reading.

Sophia's final notes were unfinished.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Cassandra.

Marcus froze.

Because Cassandra had not been part of their lives yet.

Not officially.

Not according to Marcus.

How could Sophia know her name?

A noise interrupted him.

Marcus turned.

The door was open.

Nobody should have been there.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Someone moved quickly down the hallway.

Marcus ran after them.

But by the time he reached the entrance...

They were gone.

The next morning, Marcus confronted the staff.

Not with anger.

With questions.

Everyone gathered in the living room.

The employees who had worked for the family for years.

People Marcus considered loyal.

"I need honesty."

Nobody spoke.

"I know someone has been hiding information."

The room became tense.

"I am giving that person one chance."

Silence.

"Tell me now."

An older woman stepped forward.

Her name was Rosa.

She had worked for the Vale family since before Lily was born.

Marcus respected her like family.

"Mr. Vale..."

Her voice trembled.

"I know something."

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus softened.

"Rosa."

She looked down.

"I should have told you years ago."

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

"What?"

Rosa took a breath.

"Before Mrs. Sophia died, she was afraid."

Marcus became still.

"Afraid of what?"

Rosa looked around.

Then whispered:

"Someone in this house."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

Rosa hesitated.

"I don't know."

Marcus's expression changed.

"You don't know?"

"Mrs. Sophia never told me the name."

"Then what did she tell you?"

Rosa's eyes filled with sadness.

"She told me if anything happened to her..."

A pause.

"To protect Lily."

Marcus felt the air disappear.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Rosa started crying.

"Because after she died, everyone said it was an accident."

A pause.

"And then Cassandra arrived."

Marcus looked at her.

"What does Cassandra have to do with this?"

Rosa shook her head.

"I don't know."

Then she said something that made Marcus freeze.

"But Mrs. Sophia knew someone like her would come."

That night, Marcus couldn't sleep.

Too many questions.

Too many connections.

Sophia had known something was wrong.

Cassandra had entered their lives with a plan.

Someone inside the mansion had helped.

And Lily had been caught in the middle.

At midnight, Marcus received a message from Daniel.

We found Thomas.

Marcus immediately called.

"Where is he?"

A pause.

"Not where we expected."

"What does that mean?"

Daniel's voice became serious.

"Thomas has been hiding for years."

Marcus stood.

"Why?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Afraid of who?"

Silence.

Then:

"Someone powerful."

The next morning, Marcus met Thomas in a private location.

The former security manager looked completely different.

Older.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

Marcus sat across from him.

"You worked for my family for twelve years."

Thomas nodded.

"I know."

"Then explain something."

Marcus placed the documents on the table.

"Why did you help someone enter my home?"

Thomas looked at the papers.

Then closed his eyes.

"Because I was threatened."

"By who?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then whispered:

"By the same person who caused Mrs. Vale's death."

Marcus went completely still.

The world seemed to stop.

Because for six years, Marcus had accepted losing Sophia.

Now someone was telling him she had been taken.

Not lost.

Taken.

"Who?"

Thomas looked at him.

And said the name.

The name Marcus never expected.

Marcus left the meeting without another word.

His hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From anger.

Because everything he believed about his life had been built on a lie.

His wife.

His marriage.

His daughter's suffering.

All connected.

That evening, Marcus returned home.

Lily ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

He picked her up.

Held her tightly.

For a moment, he forgot the investigation.

Forgot the enemy.

Forgot the secrets.

There was only his daughter.

Then Lily whispered:

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Are you trying to find Mommy?"

Marcus froze.

"Why do you ask?"

She looked at him seriously.

"Because I think Mommy left something for you."

Marcus stared at her.

"What?"

Lily pointed toward the old family room.

"She told me not to forget."

Marcus carried her inside.

"Forget what?"

The little girl looked at the wall.

Then said quietly:

"The truth."

Marcus looked around the room.

And for the first time, he realized something.

The mansion was not just hiding secrets.

It was protecting them.

Somewhere inside those walls was the final piece of the puzzle.

The truth Sophia had tried to leave behind.

And the person who destroyed his family was about to discover one thing:

Marcus Vale was no longer searching for answers.

He was coming for justice.
