Chapter 9 – The Daughter’s Hidden Memories

THE DAUGHTER HE PROMISED TO PROTECT

Chapter 9 – The Daughter’s Hidden Memories

Marcus Vale had faced enemies before.

He had faced competitors who wanted to destroy his company.

He had faced people who wanted his money.

He had faced strangers who smiled during negotiations while secretly planning his downfall.

But nothing prepared him for the possibility that his greatest mistake...

Was believing his own daughter had forgotten.

The photograph sat on his desk.

Sophia.

The night before she died.

And in the background...

Himself.

Marcus had stared at it for hours.

Searching.

Analyzing.

Trying to understand.

Why was he there?

Why had Sophia taken that picture?

Why had someone sent it to him now?

Every answer created more questions.

At sunrise, Marcus called Daniel.

"I need the original photograph."

Daniel answered immediately.

"We already examined it."

"No."

Marcus looked at the picture again.

"I need everything."

A pause.

"Every detail."

Two hours later, Daniel arrived.

He placed the photograph under a scanner.

"The image is authentic."

Marcus nodded.

"What about the location?"

Daniel checked the report.

"It was taken near the old Vale estate road."

Marcus frowned.

"The night Sophia died?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Marcus remembered that night.

The worst night of his life.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The impossible words.

His wife was gone.

He remembered holding Lily afterward.

A little girl too young to understand why her mother would never come home.

He remembered promising Sophia:

I will protect her.

But now he wondered...

Had he failed before he even knew there was danger?

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"There is something else."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

"We found another image."

He placed a second photograph on the desk.

Marcus stared.

This one showed Sophia.

Not alone.

She was standing beside a car.

Talking to someone.

Someone whose face was partially hidden.

But Marcus recognized the clothes.

The posture.

The watch.

His heart stopped.

"That's..."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus stood.

"That's me."

The room became silent.

Because the impossible was becoming real.

There were photographs of Marcus meeting Sophia that night.

But Marcus had no memory of it.

None.

"Could they be fake?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then why don't I remember?"

Neither man answered.

That evening, Marcus returned home.

He found Lily sitting in the living room.

She was holding an old stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she had carried through every difficult moment.

"Daddy?"

Marcus sat beside her.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Why do you look sad?"

Marcus forced a smile.

"Just thinking."

"About Mommy?"

He looked at her.

"Yes."

Lily became quiet.

Then she said:

"I remember something."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

She looked nervous.

"Something about Mommy."

Marcus immediately softened.

"You can tell me."

"But Cassandra said I shouldn't."

His expression changed.

"Cassandra?"

Lily nodded.

"She said some memories are dangerous."

Marcus felt anger rise.

But he controlled it.

"What memory?"

Lily looked down.

"I don't know if it's real."

"Tell me anyway."

The little girl hugged her rabbit.

"When Mommy was still here..."

A pause.

"She was scared."

Marcus's breathing changed.

"Scared of what?"

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know."

She thought carefully.

"She used to lock the office door."

Marcus listened.

"And she told me..."

Lily stopped.

"What did she tell you?"

The child whispered:

"If Daddy ever forgets..."

Marcus felt cold.

"Forget what?"

Lily looked directly at him.

"To look under the house."

Marcus froze.

"Under the house?"

Lily nodded.

"Mommy said the truth was hiding there."

The next morning, Marcus called Daniel.

"Search the mansion."

Daniel was confused.

"For what?"

"Hidden rooms."

A pause.

"Hidden spaces."

The search began immediately.

The mansion was old.

Built decades ago.

There were places even Marcus had never explored.

Behind walls.

Under floors.

Inside storage areas.

Hours passed.

Nothing.

Then one investigator found something.

A small opening beneath the old library.

Marcus arrived immediately.

The hidden door was covered by years of dust.

But the lock was new.

Someone had accessed it recently.

Inside was a small underground room.

No furniture.

No decoration.

Only one metal box.

Marcus opened it.

Inside were documents.

And a recording device.

His hands trembled.

Because he knew.

This was Sophia's final message.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then...

Sophia's voice.

Marcus stopped breathing.

"Marcus..."

Six years disappeared instantly.

Her voice.

Her real voice.

Alive.

"If you are hearing this, something happened."

A pause.

"I don't know if I will have time to explain everything."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Tears formed.

"I discovered something about the people around us."

Sophia continued.

"People who smile at our family."

"People who claim to love us."

"But they are not what they appear to be."

Marcus listened carefully.

Then Sophia said something that made his blood run cold.

"The person I trusted most betrayed me."

He looked at Daniel.

Neither man moved.

"I wanted to tell you sooner."

Sophia's voice became emotional.

"But I was afraid."

A pause.

"Not for myself."

"For Lily."

Marcus covered his mouth.

"If anything happens to me..."

Sophia continued.

"Do not believe the first story you hear."

"Do not trust anyone who arrives offering comfort."

The message continued.

"I know someone will try to replace me."

Marcus's eyes widened.

Replace her.

That was exactly what happened.

"Marcus..."

Sophia's voice became softer.

"Please listen carefully."

"Protect Lily from the person who wants my place."

The recording ended.

Silence filled the hidden room.

Marcus stood there.

Unable to move.

Because Sophia had known.

She knew someone would enter their lives.

Someone who wanted her position.

Someone who wanted the family she built.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Mr. Vale..."

Marcus interrupted.

"Find out who accessed this room."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And find every person who knew about this place."

But before Daniel left, Marcus noticed something else.

A small envelope at the bottom of the box.

His name was written on it.

For Marcus.

Inside was a letter.

Only a few sentences.

But they destroyed him.

Marcus,

If you failed to remember that night, it means someone succeeded in making you forget.

They did not only want to destroy our family.

They wanted to control you.

Trust yourself.

The truth is closer than you think.

—Sophia

Marcus read the final line again.

Closer than you think.

That night, Marcus sat beside Lily's bed.

Watching her sleep.

The little girl who had carried memories everyone ignored.

The little girl who knew something was wrong before any adult did.

He gently touched her hair.

"I should have listened."

A tear fell.

"I should have protected you."

Lily opened her eyes slightly.

"Daddy?"

"I'm here."

"Are you sad?"

Marcus smiled sadly.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm just sorry."

"For what?"

"For not seeing."

Lily reached for his hand.

"It's okay."

Marcus looked at her.

"No, sweetheart."

His voice broke.

"It's not."

Across the city, Cassandra received a message.

Marcus found Sophia's recording.

Her face turned pale.

"No."

Another message appeared.

He knows someone tried to replace Sophia.

Cassandra stepped back.

Because she understood.

The secret she feared most was no longer hidden.

She called Evelyn immediately.

"You knew about the recording."

Silence.

"You knew."

Evelyn finally answered.

"I didn't know where Sophia hid it."

Cassandra's voice became cold.

"But you knew it existed."

Another silence.

Cassandra closed her eyes.

Everything was collapsing.

The trial.

Her reputation.

Her lies.

Now Sophia's final message.

But there was one thing Cassandra still had.

One final secret.

The one even Evelyn did not know.

The one that could change everything.

Because Sophia's hidden memories were only the beginning.

And Marcus was about to discover the most painful truth of all:

The person who destroyed his family had not entered his life after Sophia died.

They had been there long before.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

Preparing.
