CHAPTER 7 – The Woman Behind Preston

CHAPTER 7 – The Woman Behind Preston

The photograph remained on my phone.

I stared at it until my eyes hurt.

My mother.

Standing beside Preston.

Not at a family dinner.

Not at a charity event.

Not at some innocent gathering.

The timestamp was clear.

The night before my wedding.

The night before Preston destroyed my daughter's life.

The message beneath the photograph was only one sentence.

"Your mother didn't protect him, Evelyn."

"She helped him."

I wanted to deny it.

I wanted to tell myself it was fake.

A trick.

Another one of Preston's games.

Because accepting the truth meant accepting something much more painful.

My mother wasn't just weak.

She wasn't just afraid.

She had chosen a side.

And that side was never mine.

I drove back to the Harrington mansion before sunrise.

The house looked different now.

Before, it had felt like the place where I lost my childhood.

Now...

It felt like the place where everyone had been hiding the truth.

The front door was unlocked.

That scared me more than if it had been locked.

People who have nothing to hide don't leave doors open.

People who are waiting for someone...

Do.

"Mother?"

My voice echoed through the hallway.

No answer.

I walked into the living room.

The same room where family portraits covered the walls.

The same room where guests always admired the Harrington legacy.

But now I saw something else.

A collection of lies.

"Looking for answers?"

Her voice came from behind me.

I turned.

My mother stood at the entrance.

She looked tired.

Older.

Not like the powerful woman everyone feared.

Just a mother who knew her secrets were finally falling apart.

"You sent him after Sophie."

I didn't ask.

I accused.

Her face changed.

"Evelyn..."

"No."

I stepped forward.

"Don't say my name like you care."

The words hurt her.

Good.

For once, I wanted her to feel something.

"Did you know what Preston planned?"

She looked away.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

"How long?"

Silence.

"How long have you been helping him?"

Finally, she whispered:

"Since before your father died."

The answer felt like a physical blow.

I sat down because my legs suddenly felt weak.

"Why?"

My mother looked toward the family portrait.

"The day Preston learned the truth about his birth, he was destroyed."

I almost laughed.

Destroyed?

"He tried to ruin my daughter's life."

"I know."

"No."

My voice hardened.

"You don't get to say that."

I stood.

"You knew what he was becoming."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I thought I could save him."

There it was again.

The excuse everyone used.

Save him.

Protect him.

Understand him.

But nobody ever asked:

Who protects the people he hurts?

"You couldn't save him."

I whispered.

"You sacrificed everyone else trying."

She closed her eyes.

The Woman Who Created the Golden Son

"My father knew."

I said.

My mother looked at me.

"What?"

"He knew Preston was dangerous."

She remained silent.

"He recorded everything."

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You found the recordings."

Not a question.

"You knew about them."

She looked down.

"Yes."

My heart sank.

"How many secrets did you hide from me?"

She didn't answer.

"Tell me."

A long silence passed.

Then she finally spoke.

"Your father wanted to expose Preston."

I waited.

"But I stopped him."

The room went completely quiet.

"Why?"

My mother's voice cracked.

"Because Preston was my son."

I stared at her.

"No."

She looked confused.

"No?"

"He was your son."

I pointed toward the upstairs hallway.

"Not mine."

The pain on her face was immediate.

But I continued.

"You spent thirty years asking me to understand him."

"You never asked him to understand me."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Because she knew.

The Secret Agreement

My mother walked toward a cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside was a folder.

"I kept this because I knew one day you would need to see it."

I took the folder.

Inside was a contract.

A private agreement.

Between Preston...

And my mother.

The date was five years before my father died.

My hands shook.

"What is this?"

My mother whispered:

"Preston wanted control of the company."

I read the document.

The agreement stated that if my father became unable to manage the estate, Preston would take temporary control.

But there was something else.

A hidden clause.

If Evelyn Harrington challenges ownership, she will be removed from the family trust.

I looked up.

"He planned this years ago."

My mother nodded.

"Yes."

"And you signed it."

She couldn't answer.

Because she had.

The woman who gave birth to me...

Had signed a document designed to erase me.

The Final Recording

My mother handed me a small device.

"Your father left this for you."

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

"Eleanor."

My mother froze.

"I know what you and Preston have done."

A pause.

"But I also know why."

My father's voice sounded tired.

"You believe protecting him is love."

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"But you are wrong."

The recording continued.

"Love without accountability is not love."

I felt those words deeply.

"One day Preston will hurt someone you cannot protect."

My father's voice became quieter.

"And when that day comes..."

A pause.

"Remember that you chose him."

The recording ended.

My mother covered her face.

For a moment...

I saw regret.

But regret does not undo damage.

The Real Enemy

I looked at the photograph again.

The one showing my mother and Preston.

"Where is he?"

My mother looked at me.

"Why?"

"Because I want the truth from him."

She shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"Preston isn't running anymore."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

She looked toward the window.

"He knows about the second will."

"So?"

Her voice became a whisper.

"He knows if the will is found..."

A pause.

"He loses everything."

I waited.

Then she said:

"And when Preston loses everything..."

She looked terrified.

"He becomes the most dangerous version of himself."

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Preston.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Did you enjoy learning about Mother?"

I said nothing.

He continued.

"She was always weak."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"You used her."

A quiet laugh.

"No, Evelyn."

A pause.

"She used me too."

"What are you talking about?"

His voice lowered.

"You still think this story is about inheritance."

Silence.

"It isn't."

My blood ran cold.

"Then what is it about?"

His answer came slowly.

"You."

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Because suddenly I understood.

The money.

The company.

The will.

The inheritance.

They were never the real reason Preston hated me.

The real reason was something my father had hidden.

Something connected to my birth.

Something that made Preston willing to destroy his own niece.

And somewhere inside the Harrington mansion...

May you like

The final secret was waiting.
