CHAPTER 8 – Twenty-Five Years of Silence

CHAPTER 8 – Twenty-Five Years of Silence

For twenty-five years, my family had lived inside a lie.

Not a small lie.

Not the kind people tell to avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

A carefully built lie.

A lie protected by my parents.

A lie hidden behind money, reputation, and the Harrington name.

And somehow...

I had been the only person who never knew.

After Preston's phone call, I couldn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sophie lying on the ballroom floor.

I saw Preston's face.

I saw my mother's silence.

And I heard the same question repeating over and over:

Why me?

For years, I thought Preston hated me because my parents favored him.

I thought he hated me because I reminded him of everything he lacked.

But now I understood.

That wasn't the whole truth.

There was something about me.

Something connected to my birth.

Something my father died trying to protect.

The next morning, I returned to my childhood home.

The place where my father's final recording had been hidden.

The place where my life had started before the Harrington family became a battlefield.

I brought the black notebook with me.

The one hidden behind the portrait.

The one filled with my father's handwriting.

I sat on the old wooden floor and opened it again.

Most of the pages were business notes.

Dates.

Names.

Financial records.

But near the end...

There were personal entries.

One page caught my attention.

"March 14, 2001."

I froze.

That date.

The year I was thirteen.

I began reading.

"Today, Preston discovered the truth about his adoption."

My hands tightened.

"He believes Evelyn knew."

I stopped.

What?

I read the sentence again.

"He believes Evelyn knew."

But I didn't.

I was thirteen years old.

A child.

I had no idea.

The next lines made my stomach turn.

"I told Preston that Evelyn had nothing to do with this."

"He refused to believe me."

I closed my eyes.

So that was when it began.

The hatred.

The resentment.

The moment Preston decided I was his enemy.

But why?

Why would he blame me?

I kept reading.

"Preston believes Evelyn represents everything he lost."

"He believes she has the one thing he will never have."

I frowned.

What?

Then the next sentence.

"The truth of who she really is."

My heart stopped.

Not inheritance.

Not money.

Me.

I turned the page.

The next entry was written years later.

"September 7, 2015."

"I found the documents."

Documents?

"The original hospital records."

My hands began shaking.

Hospital records.

Why would my father have my hospital records?

I kept reading.

"The truth is worse than I feared."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Evelyn was not supposed to grow up believing she was ordinary."

I stopped.

Ordinary?

What did that mean?

I searched through the notebook faster.

Then I found a name.

A name I had never seen before.

Richard Vale.

Underneath it:

"Biological connection confirmed."

I stared.

Richard Vale.

The name meant nothing to me.

But apparently...

It meant everything to Preston.

The Man From the Past

I spent the next three hours searching through old documents.

Finally, I found it.

A newspaper clipping.

Twenty-five years old.

The headline read:

"Business Rival Richard Vale Dies After Company Collapse."

I read the article.

Richard Vale had been a successful businessman.

A competitor of my father's.

A man who had lost everything after a major financial scandal.

But there was one detail that made my blood run cold.

He had a daughter.

A daughter born the same year as me.

The article mentioned she was raised by William Harrington after Richard's death.

I stopped.

Raised by William Harrington.

My father.

The room felt smaller.

No.

That was impossible.

I searched through more papers.

Then I found another document.

A DNA test.

My hands trembled.

The result was clear.

William Harrington was not Evelyn Harrington's biological father.

I couldn't breathe.

For my entire life...

The man I called Dad...

The man who raised me...

Wasn't my biological father.

But then...

Who was?

I looked at the name again.

Richard Vale.

The man Preston hated.

The man my father never spoke about.

The Truth My Father Carried

That night, I watched the final video again.

This time, I noticed something I missed before.

Before my father spoke...

Someone else had been in the room.

A shadow.

A person standing behind the camera.

I paused the video.

Zoomed in.

The person was a woman.

My heart started beating faster.

My mother.

She had been there.

She knew.

I called her immediately.

She answered after the third ring.

"Evelyn?"

"Tell me about Richard Vale."

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

"Where did you find that name?"

That was all I needed.

"You knew."

My mother's breathing changed.

"Evelyn..."

"Did you know he was my father?"

Nothing.

The silence was an answer.

My voice broke.

"How long?"

Finally, she whispered:

"Twenty-five years."

I closed my eyes.

Twenty-five years.

Twenty-five years of silence.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

My mother's voice cracked.

"Because your father wanted to protect you."

"From what?"

She didn't answer.

"Mother."

Finally:

"From Preston."

I froze.

"Why would Preston care?"

My mother cried quietly.

"Because when he discovered the truth..."

A pause.

"He realized something."

"What?"

Her answer was almost impossible to hear.

"Your father didn't choose Preston because he was his son."

My heart tightened.

"He chose Preston because he wanted to protect the Harrington company."

I waited.

"And then he chose you..."

Her voice trembled.

"Because you were the only true heir."

Everything went silent.

The inheritance.

The will.

The hatred.

It all made sense.

Preston had spent twenty-five years believing one thing:

That I stole the life he deserved.

But the truth was different.

He was never robbed.

He was never the victim.

He was given a chance.

And instead of accepting the truth...

He spent twenty-five years trying to erase me.

The Final Warning

Before my mother ended the call, she said something that scared me.

"Evelyn."

"Yes?"

"Do not go back to the mansion."

"Why?"

Her voice dropped.

"Because Preston knows you found the documents."

I looked around the old house.

"How?"

Another silence.

Then she whispered:

"Because I told him."

My heart stopped.

"You?"

"I'm sorry."

But before I could answer...

The lights in the house went out.

Darkness surrounded me.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming from the hallway.

I grabbed my phone.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A voice I knew.

"After twenty-five years..."

My blood froze.

"You're finally asking the right questions."

Preston stepped into the room.

And he was holding something.

A file.

The same file my father had spent his life hiding.

He smiled.

"But you're too late, Evelyn."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

His expression became cold.

"Because the truth you are searching for..."

He lifted the file.

"Is the same truth that will destroy you."

And for the first time...

I wondered if my father had hidden the truth to protect me.

May you like

Or if he had hidden it because he was afraid of what would happen when I finally found it.
