CHAPTER 2: The Footage No One Expected

CHAPTER 2: The Footage No One Expected
The ballroom doors burst open.
Two paramedics hurried toward Sophie while hotel security followed close behind.
One officer knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, can you tell me your name?"
"Sophie," she whispered through tears.
As the paramedics cleaned the blood from her forehead, I refused to let go of her hand.
Across the room, Preston straightened his tuxedo as though nothing serious had happened.
"It was an accident," he announced loudly.
"She attacked me first."
Several relatives nodded immediately.
Of course they did.
They always believed him.
The hotel security manager, Marcus Hale, stepped forward.
"I'm going to need everyone to remain where they are."
Preston scoffed.
"This is a private wedding."
Marcus remained calm.
"It became a police matter the moment a child was injured."
The room fell silent.
One of the officers spoke into his radio.
"Please secure the ballroom CCTV from the last hour."
Preston's confidence flickered.
He turned toward the bride.
For the first time all evening, she looked uncertain.
Twenty minutes later, everyone gathered around a large monitor in the hotel conference room.
The recording began.
It showed Sophie sitting quietly beside me exactly as I remembered.
She never approached the head table.
She never went near Preston's jacket.
Then the camera zoomed toward the dance floor.
There was Preston.
Looking over both shoulders.
Walking directly to our table while everyone watched the newlyweds dance.
He casually picked up Sophie's denim jacket.
Slipped his own phone into the pocket.
Smoothed the fabric.
And walked away smiling.
The room erupted.
"No..."
"My God..."
"He framed her."
My mother covered her mouth.
My father turned pale.
But the footage wasn't finished.
A second camera showed Preston grabbing the heavy oak menu board.
It clearly captured him raising it above his shoulder.
Then striking an eight-year-old child in the head.
There was no accident.
There was no misunderstanding.
There was only assault.
May you like
For the first time in his life...
No one could explain away what everyone had just seen.
