CHAPTER 3: When the Truth Finally Spoke

CHAPTER 3: When the Truth Finally Spoke

The police officers exchanged a single look.

Then one stepped toward Preston.

"Sir, turn around."

Preston laughed nervously.

"You can't be serious."

The officer remained expressionless.

"You are being detained pending investigation for assault on a minor and filing a false theft accusation."

My mother rushed forward.

"There has to be another way."

The officer shook his head.

"The cameras have already answered every question."

Preston turned toward our parents.

"Dad!"

"Do something!"

For years, my father had solved every problem with money, influence, or excuses.

This time...

There was nothing left to buy.

The evidence belonged to the hotel.

Hundreds of guests had witnessed the attack.

Several had already uploaded videos online.

The bride quietly removed her wedding ring.

She stared at Preston for a long moment.

Then placed the ring on the head table.

"I can't marry someone who hurts children."

Without another word, she walked away.

The ballroom remained silent as officers escorted Preston through the same entrance he had proudly used only hours earlier.

Not a single guest applauded.

Not a single person defended him.

Even my parents stood frozen.

Perhaps because they finally understood what years of protecting him had created.

Not a successful son.

A dangerous man.

Meanwhile, Sophie rested on a stretcher with six stitches above her eyebrow.

She looked at me with frightened eyes.

"Mommy..."

"Did I do something bad?"

My heart broke.

I kissed her forehead gently.

"No, sweetheart."

May you like

"You told the truth."

"And that's never wrong."
