CHAPTER 4: THE FAMILY THAT STOPPED BREATHING
The paramedic’s voice cut through the silence.
“She needs surgery. Now.”
I nodded without looking away from Preston.
But something else was changing in the room.
The guests weren’t whispering anymore.
They were staring.
At him.
Not at me.
At him.
My mother tried to speak.
But nothing came out at first.
Then:
“This… this doesn’t change what she did—”
“Stop,” I said.
Just one word.
And she did.
For the first time in my life.
Preston took a step forward.
His voice dropped.
“Evelyn… you’re really going to do this? Over a misunderstanding?”
I laughed once.
It didn’t sound like humor.
“It’s on camera.”
Silence.
Outside, sirens grew louder.
Closer.
Preston looked around the room like someone searching for an exit that no longer existed.
And then I said it.
Softly.
Clearly.
“You were always protected from consequences.”
A pause.
“But not from recordings.”
The hotel doors burst open.
Police entered.
The red and blue lights painted everything differently now.
No longer a wedding.
A scene.
Preston turned toward me one last time.
And I saw it again.
That same smile from earlier.
May you like
Except now—
it was breaking.
