Chapter 2: The Children's Story

Chapter 2: The Children's Story
Nathan called the family physician and his attorney before he called anyone else.
Then he sat on the cold basement floor.
"What are your names?" he asked gently.
"I'm Liam."
"I'm Emma."
"And I'm Noah."
"How long have you been down here?"
Liam looked toward the stairs.
"I don't know."
"What happens when your mother gets angry?"
The children exchanged frightened glances.
Emma quietly answered.
"We're not allowed to tell."
Nathan swallowed hard.
"You won't get in trouble."
Not anymore.
Over the next hour, the children described punishments involving isolation, withheld meals, and threats that no one would believe them if they spoke.

Every sentence shattered another piece of the life he believed he knew.
