Chapter 17: The Price of Revenge

THE HAWTHORNE FILES

Chapter 17: The Price of Revenge

The world believed the war was over.

They were wrong.

The newspapers called it the fall of the old order.

The collapse of the Holloway empire.

The end of the secret societies that had controlled influence for generations.

They were wrong.

Because the truth was much more dangerous.

The enemy was not an organization.

Not a family.

Not a single person.

The enemy was an idea.

The belief that some people had the right to decide the future of everyone else.

Mara Vale stood inside the Hawthorne archive, staring at the world map displayed on the screen.

Hundreds of locations.

Hundreds of hidden foundations.

Hundreds of places where power had been stored, protected, and transferred.

For generations.

She had spent her entire life trying to understand one museum.

Now she discovered the museum was only a doorway.

Alexander stood beside her.

Quiet.

Almost afraid.

Not of the enemy.

Of her.

“You are thinking about revenge.”

Mara did not look at him.

“No.”

Alexander studied her.

“You are lying.”

A pause.

“I learned from the best.”

The words hurt him.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

Him.

The man who had spent years manipulating events from the shadows.

The man who believed controlling the outcome was the same as protecting people.

“Mara.”

She finally turned.

“What?”

“Revenge will destroy you.”

A small smile appeared.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“That is exactly what everyone says when they are afraid of losing control.”

Alexander sighed.

“You think I am trying to control you.”

“Are you?”

Silence.

That was his answer.

Mara looked away.

The truth was complicated.

She hated what her father had done.

But she also understood something.

Alexander was not the monster she imagined.

He was a man who became a monster while trying to fight monsters.

And that frightened her more.

Because she saw how easy it was.

How slowly it happened.

One compromise.

One secret.

One justified decision.

Until one day…

You became the thing you promised to destroy.

The archive door opened.

Everyone turned.

Richard Holloway entered.

Nobody expected him.

Especially Mara.

He looked different.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

The arrogance was gone.

The certainty was gone.

The man who once walked through rooms believing everyone belonged beneath him now looked like someone carrying a weight too heavy to hide.

Alexander immediately became defensive.

“You should not be here.”

Richard ignored him.

“I know.”

Mara looked at him.

“Why are you here?”

Richard placed a folder on the table.

“Because I know where they are.”

Nobody moved.

“Who?”

Richard looked at the world map.

“The original architects.”

Silence.

Alexander stepped forward.

“How?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because unlike you…”

A pause.

“I never stopped working for them.”

The room changed.

Mara’s expression hardened.

“You were still connected to the Circle.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander looked disgusted.

“All these years.”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

Richard looked at him.

“You think I enjoyed serving them?”

A bitter laugh.

“You think I enjoyed watching my family become a tool?”

Nobody answered.

Because they understood.

Richard Holloway was many things.

Cruel.

Ambitious.

Dangerous.

But he was also trapped.

Just like everyone else.

Mara opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Locations.

Names.

Financial records.

And one document.

A revenge plan.

Her eyes stopped.

“What is this?”

Richard said nothing.

She looked closer.

The document was old.

Very old.

Created before she was born.

The title:

OPERATION VENGEANCE.

Her hands tightened.

“Whose plan is this?”

Richard looked at Alexander.

Alexander looked away.

Mara immediately understood.

“No.”

Nobody answered.

“Tell me.”

Richard spoke.

“Your father.”

The room became silent.

Mara looked at Alexander.

“Is this true?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word felt heavier than anything else.

“You planned revenge against them.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Alexander walked toward the table.

“When I discovered the Meridian Circle, I wanted to destroy them.”

Mara listened.

“I spent years collecting evidence.”

“Building connections.”

“Creating a counter-network.”

Richard interrupted:

“He was not trying to expose them.”

Mara looked at him.

“What was he trying to do?”

Richard answered:

“Replace them.”

The words hit harder than an explosion.

Alexander did not deny it.

Mara stared.

“You wanted their power.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Alexander looked at her.

“I wanted their power removed.”

A pause.

“But I convinced myself the only way to remove it was to take control of it first.”

Mara shook her head.

“The same mistake.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty was painful.

Richard looked at Mara.

“This is why they fear you.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the first person who understands the cycle.”

Mara looked at him.

“What cycle?”

Richard pointed at the documents.

“Every generation thinks they are different.”

“The founders created the system to protect people.”

“The Vales tried to control it.”

“The Holloways tried to dominate it.”

“The Circle tried to perfect it.”

A pause.

“And everyone ended up becoming the same.”

Mara looked at the map.

“So what do we do?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

There was no enemy to defeat.

Only a system to dismantle.

The lights flickered.

The security system activated.

Victor rushed into the room.

“Mara.”

Everyone turned.

“What happened?”

Victor looked worried.

“The Meridian locations are moving.”

“What?”

“The foundations are not just hiding.”

He placed a tablet on the table.

“They are preparing.”

The screen showed dozens of locations changing status.

ACTIVE.

ACTIVE.

ACTIVE.

Mara stared.

“They knew.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Knew what?”

“That we found them.”

A message appeared.

Not from Adrian.

Not from Helena.

From someone else.

MARA VALE.

Everyone froze.

The message continued.

YOU HAVE CONFUSED REVENGE WITH JUSTICE.

Mara stepped closer.

A video activated.

An old woman appeared.

Her grandmother.

The first Vale.

The founder.

The architect.

“You have inherited the greatest weakness of our family.”

Mara stared.

“What weakness?”

The woman looked directly at her.

“Your desire to save everyone.”

A pause.

“Your father failed because he wanted revenge.”

“Richard failed because he wanted power.”

“The Circle failed because they wanted control.”

The old woman leaned closer.

“But you…”

A faint smile.

“You are about to fail for a different reason.”

Mara’s expression hardened.

“What reason?”

The answer appeared on the screen.

YOU WANT TO BE RIGHT.

The message cut.

Nobody spoke.

Because the accusation was accurate.

Mara had spent her entire life fighting manipulation.

Fighting lies.

Fighting control.

But somewhere along the way…

She started believing only she could fix everything.

The same belief that destroyed everyone before her.

Alexander looked at her.

“Mara.”

She remained silent.

Richard spoke quietly.

“She is right.”

Mara looked at him.

“That surprises me.”

Richard accepted it.

“It should.”

A pause.

“Because revenge is easier than forgiveness.”

The words stayed with her.

Because they were true.

Revenge was simple.

Someone hurt you.

You hurt them back.

Justice was harder.

Justice required restraint.

Understanding.

Mercy.

And Mara hated that.

Because mercy had always been what powerful people demanded from victims.

But maybe…

Real mercy was not weakness.

Maybe it was refusing to become the person who hurt you.

The archive doors suddenly locked.

Victor checked the system.

“Someone accessed the museum.”

“Who?”

His face turned pale.

“I don’t know.”

The speakers activated.

A voice filled the room.

A voice Mara had never heard.

But somehow…

She recognized it.

Because it sounded like her.

Cold.

Calm.

Certain.

“Hello, Mara.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“You have spent your entire life fighting the people who came before you.”

A pause.

“But you never asked the most important question.”

Mara stared at the speakers.

“What question?”

The answer came immediately.

“Who comes after you?”

The lights went dark.

A final message appeared.

THE NEXT HEIR HAS ARRIVED.

Mara felt the air leave her lungs.

Because the screen displayed a name.

A name she never expected.

A name that changed everything.

LUCAS VALE.

Her brother.

The brother she never knew existed.

The brother her father had erased.

And somewhere inside the darkness…

Someone whispered:

“Welcome back to the game, Mara.”

May you like

The war had not ended.

It had only found a new generation.
