Chapter 18: The Final Auction

THE HAWTHORNE FILES

Chapter 18: The Final Auction

The name remained on the screen.

LUCAS VALE.

Mara stared at it.

For several seconds, her mind refused to accept what she was seeing.

A brother.

A person who had existed her entire life…

And yet had never existed in her world.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of her family’s history.

Another life someone had chosen for her.

“No.”

The word escaped quietly.

Alexander looked at her.

“Mara…”

She turned toward him.

“Do not.”

He stopped.

Because he knew.

She was not angry at the name.

She was angry at him.

“You had another child.”

Alexander said nothing.

That was the answer.

Mara stepped closer.

“Another child.”

Her voice became colder.

“And you erased him.”

“I was trying to protect him.”

The sentence made her laugh.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone always says that.”

A pause.

“You all use the same excuse.”

Alexander lowered his eyes.

Because there was no defense.

Not anymore.

Richard watched silently.

Even he understood.

The greatest weakness of the Vale family was never greed.

It was the belief that love gave them permission to make decisions for others.

Mara looked at the screen.

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Then the speakers activated.

A voice.

Young.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Mara.”

She froze.

The voice continued.

“You spent years searching for your father.”

A pause.

“Searching for the truth.”

The screen changed.

A man appeared.

Mid-thirties.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A face with enough resemblance to Alexander that Mara immediately understood.

Lucas Vale.

Her brother.

“I wondered what you would be like.”

Mara stared.

“You knew about me.”

Lucas smiled slightly.

“Of course.”

“Then why didn’t you find me?”

The smile disappeared.

“Because Father told me not to.”

The answer hurt.

Again.

Always someone else deciding.

Always someone else controlling.

“Where are you?”

Lucas looked around.

An unfamiliar room.

Then Mara noticed something.

The walls.

The lighting.

The design.

“Another foundation.”

Lucas nodded.

“Very good.”

A pause.

“You really are his daughter.”

Mara hated hearing that.

Because everyone saw her as a reflection of someone else.

Alexander’s daughter.

The Vale heir.

The person who inherited the war.

Never just Mara.

“What do you want?”

Lucas looked directly at her.

“The same thing you wanted.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“The truth.”

The screen changed.

A new image appeared.

A golden auction hall.

Not the Hawthorne Museum.

Something larger.

Older.

More secretive.

At the center was a single object.

A black box.

“The Final Auction.”

Mara frowned.

“What is that?”

Richard answered quietly.

“The beginning.”

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“Every generation, the architects gather.”

“For what?”

“To decide ownership.”

Mara looked confused.

“Ownership of what?”

Richard looked at the map.

“The world.”

Nobody spoke.

It sounded impossible.

But after everything she had seen…

Impossible had become normal.

Lucas continued.

“The original architects created a tradition.”

A pause.

“Every thirty years, they hold an auction.”

Mara stared.

“They sell information?”

“No.”

Lucas looked serious.

“They sell influence.”

The screen displayed names.

Governments.

Corporations.

Institutions.

Every major power structure.

Mara felt sick.

“They decide who rises.”

Lucas nodded.

“And who falls.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“This cannot happen.”

Lucas laughed.

“Father.”

A pause.

“You spent eleven years fighting them.”

A cold smile.

“And you still do not understand them.”

The words angered Alexander.

But they were true.

Mara looked at Lucas.

“You want me to go there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they are waiting for you.”

“No.”

Lucas looked surprised.

“No?”

Mara shook her head.

“I am not an item to be auctioned.”

A pause.

“I am not a family asset.”

Another pause.

“And I am not the next version of my father.”

Lucas became quiet.

For the first time.

Mara continued:

“If this auction exists…”

She looked at the Black Ledger.

“Then it ends.”

Lucas studied her.

“You think you can destroy something older than your family?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mara looked at the camera.

“Because everyone before me tried to control the system.”

A pause.

“I will remove the need for one.”

The screen went black.

Then another message appeared.

INVITATION ACCEPTED.

Mara frowned.

“I did not accept.”

Alexander looked at the screen.

“It does not matter.”

The words appeared:

THE HEIR HAS BEEN SELECTED.

Richard stepped forward.

“No.”

The lights changed.

The museum transformed.

The walls opened.

The hidden archive disappeared.

The auction hall from the video appeared on every screen.

A massive room.

Thousands of seats.

Hundreds of anonymous figures.

Waiting.

Victor whispered:

“They are bringing the auction here.”

Mara understood.

“No.”

She looked around.

“They are not bringing it here.”

A pause.

“They are making the museum the auction.”

The realization spread.

The Hawthorne Museum.

The place where everything started.

Would become the final battlefield.

A message appeared:

LOT NUMBER ONE.

The screen showed:

THE VALE LEGACY.

The room went silent.

Then:

LOT NUMBER TWO.

THE HOLLOWAY EMPIRE.

Richard closed his eyes.

Even now.

Even after everything.

They were still treating lives like property.

Then:

LOT NUMBER THREE.

The screen changed.

Everyone froze.

Mara’s name appeared.

MARA ALEXANDRA VALE.

A cold anger moved through her.

They were not just selling power.

They were selling people.

Lucas appeared again.

“Mara.”

She looked at him.

“You are angry.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She frowned.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because anger is what brought you here.”

Mara stared.

Lucas continued:

“But what you do next determines whether you become like them.”

The connection ended.

The museum became quiet.

Alexander approached her.

“You do not have to go.”

Mara looked at him.

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She surprised him.

“You finally said something right.”

A faint sadness crossed his face.

Mara looked at the auction hall appearing around them.

“The problem is not whether I go.”

A pause.

“The problem is what happens when I arrive.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You are planning something.”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

“What?”

She looked at everyone.

At Alexander.

At Richard.

At Grant.

At Victor.

The people who had shaped her life.

The people who had damaged her.

The people who had taught her.

“I am going to win.”

Nobody spoke.

Richard frowned.

“You cannot win their game.”

Mara smiled.

“I know.”

“Then?”

“I am not going to play it.”

The auction began.

A bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The speakers announced:

“Welcome, guests.”

“Welcome, architects.”

“Welcome, heirs.”

The final auction had begun.

The anonymous figures watched.

The world’s hidden rulers had gathered.

And at the center of the room stood Mara Vale.

The woman they wanted to own.

The woman they wanted to control.

The woman they believed would continue their legacy.

But they had misunderstood the most important thing.

Mara was not there to inherit power.

She was there to end the need for it.

The auctioneer raised the hammer.

“Opening bid.”

The room became silent.

“For the Vale legacy…”

The hammer lifted.

“For complete control of the Hawthorne Foundation…”

A pause.

“For the future of global influence…”

The hammer prepared to fall.

Then Mara spoke.

“No.”

Every head turned.

The auctioneer stopped.

Mara stepped forward.

“You made one final mistake.”

Silence.

“You thought I came here to be sold.”

A pause.

She looked around the room.

“I came here to reveal the buyers.”

The cameras activated.

The screens changed.

Every hidden face.

Every anonymous architect.

Every secret participant.

Their identities began appearing.

Panic spread.

The auction collapsed instantly.

Because for the first time in history…

The powerful were no longer invisible.

Mara smiled.

“The final auction has ended.”

A pause.

“Now begins the final trial.”

The hammer fell.

But not to sell something.

To announce judgment.

And somewhere in the crowd…

A familiar voice whispered:

“Very clever, Mara.”

She turned.

A man stepped into the light.

The last architect.

The person who created the entire system.

The person even Alexander feared.

Mara stared.

Because she recognized him.

The face from old photographs.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Her grandfather.

The first Vale.

Alive.

And smiling.

“Welcome, granddaughter.”

May you like

The world had one final secret left.

And Mara was standing directly in front of it.
