Chapter 3 – Behind the Smile

Chapter 3 – Behind the Smile

Earlier that afternoon, Nora had believed Grant Mercer barely knew she existed.

She couldn't have been more wrong.

As preparations intensified before the gala, Grant had stopped her twice.

The first time, he complained that the flowers near his table weren't symmetrical.

The second time, he insisted his family's preferred champagne had been served at the wrong temperature.

Neither complaint had been true.

He simply wanted someone beneath him to blame.

Denise had quietly warned Nora afterward.

"Never argue with people who confuse money with permission."

At the time, Nora thought it was just another lesson about customer service.

Now she understood.

Grant wasn't angry because anything had gone wrong.

He enjoyed watching people become uncomfortable.

Humiliation wasn't an accident.

It was entertainment.

And tonight...

He had chosen the wrong audience.
