Chapter 4 – The Witnesses

Evelyn addressed the ballroom without raising her voice.

"I'd like everyone's attention."

Nearly two hundred conversations stopped.

"I understand many of you are uncomfortable."

She paused.

"So am I."

Her eyes moved slowly across the room.

"You have just witnessed a member of this Foundation's staff being publicly humiliated while dozens of respectable people looked away."

Nobody spoke.

"The Foundation raises millions every year in the name of dignity, education, and opportunity."

She gestured toward Nora.

"If those values disappear the moment wealthy people enter the room..."

"...then they were never values."

Only slogans.

The words landed harder than anyone expected.

An elderly trustee stood first.

"I saw him grab her."

Another guest followed.

"I did too."

A third quietly added,

"I recorded part of it."

One statement became another.

Then another.

Within minutes, the silence that had protected Grant all evening completely collapsed.

His attorney whispered something into his ear.

May you like

Grant ignored him.

He was too busy realizing that every witness who had once protected him was now protecting themselves.
