CHAPTER 15

CHAPTER 15
THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY
The first thing Sofia said when she saw me was:
“I thought you were a dream.”
I didn’t understand.
We were sitting across from each other in a quiet private room inside Escalante headquarters.
Two strangers.
Two sisters.
Two women who had spent their entire lives believing our family was smaller than it truly was.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Sofia looked down at her hands.
“I spent thirty years imagining someone would come looking for me.”
A pause.
“But nobody did.”
The pain in her voice was not anger.
That was what hurt the most.
It was acceptance.
The kind that comes when someone has waited too long.
Her name was Sofia.
Sofia Reyes.
At least…
That was the name she had lived with.
The name written on her documents.
The name everyone around her knew.
But it was not the name she was born with.
She was Sofia Escalante.
My older sister.
The daughter my mother was told had died.
The child someone erased.
I stared at her.
Trying to find pieces of my mother.
The shape of her eyes.
The softness in her expression.
The small movements that reminded me of home.
And I found them.
Not completely.
But enough.
Enough to know she belonged.
“How did you find me?”
Sofia looked at the floor.
“I didn’t.”
A pause.
“Someone found me.”
My expression changed.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then said the name that made everything colder.
“Richard Hamilton.”
The room went silent.
My father, who had been standing near the window, immediately turned.
“Richard?”
Sofia nodded.
“The original Hamilton family leader.”
The man who started everything.
The man who had been dead for years.
The man whose actions had created decades of destruction.
I looked at Michael.
He had been silent until then.
But his expression told me everything.
“You knew.”
Michael sighed.
“I suspected.”
My eyes moved toward him.
“Suspected what?”
“That Richard didn’t just erase my existence.”
A pause.
“He erased anyone who threatened his control.”
The pieces began falling into place.
Michael.
Sofia.
My mother.
The missing records.
The false identities.
The Hamilton obsession with protecting their name.
It was never just about money.
It was about control.
Sofia reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I kept this for years.”
She placed it on the table.
“My adoptive mother gave it to me before she died.”
My fingers touched the envelope.
“Why?”
“She told me I deserved to know the truth.”
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Not from my mother.
From Richard Hamilton.
The handwriting was cold.
Calculated.
Almost emotionless.
The child must disappear.
No one can know her connection to the Escalante family.
The Hamilton legacy cannot be threatened.
Change the records.
Create a new identity.
Make sure she never learns where she came from.
My hands began shaking.
Someone had not lost Sofia.
Someone had stolen her.
Andrew arrived halfway through the meeting.
He had insisted on coming after hearing Sofia’s name.
When he entered the room and saw her…
He stopped.
Because he saw it too.
The resemblance.
The history.
The damage.
“Another victim.”
The words came from Andrew.
Everyone looked at him.
He looked exhausted.
“I spent my entire life benefiting from what my family did.”
He looked at Sofia.
“And I never knew.”
Sofia studied him.
“You’re Andrew.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“The heir.”
The word sounded strange coming from her.
Not because it was insulting.
Because it carried so much history.
Andrew looked away.
“Not anymore.”
For the first time, I saw something different in Andrew.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Something closer to responsibility.
He had spent his whole life trying to protect a legacy.
Now he finally understood the legacy was not worth protecting.
“We need to find out who helped Richard.”
My father spoke.
Everyone looked at him.
“Richard couldn’t do this alone.”
Michael nodded.
“He needed someone inside.”
Someone inside.
The words repeated in my mind.
Because that was the terrifying part.
A secret like this required cooperation.
Documents had to disappear.
Records had to change.
People had to stay silent.
Someone had helped him.
Someone had protected the lie for decades.
Then Sofia spoke.
“There was another person.”
Everyone turned.
“What person?”
Sofia swallowed.
“The woman who raised me.”
“What about her?”
“She told me something before she died.”
A pause.
“She said she wasn’t the person who took me.”
My heart tightened.
“Then who was?”
Sofia looked at me.
“She said the person who changed my identity…”
“Was someone who loved me.”
Silence.
Because that made no sense.
Why would someone who loved a child erase her?
“What was her name?”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“She called herself Aunt Claire.”
Michael suddenly stood.
“Claire?”
His expression changed completely.
“What?”
Michael looked terrified.
“Claire Hamilton.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But everyone else reacted.
Especially Margaret.
Because ten minutes later, when we confronted her…
She broke.
Margaret was brought to Escalante headquarters.
Not arrested.
Not forced.
She came willingly.
But the woman who entered was different from the woman who once controlled every room.
She looked older.
Smaller.
Tired.
When she saw Sofia…
She stopped.
A tear appeared in her eye.
“Sofia.”
Sofia stared.
“You knew.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer was devastating.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because it confirmed everything.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my family was looking for me.”
Margaret’s silence was the answer.
Sofia stepped closer.
“Why?”
Margaret looked at her.
And for the first time…
There was no arrogance.
No manipulation.
No performance.
Only regret.
“Because I was afraid.”
Everyone remained silent.
Margaret continued.
“Richard controlled everything.”
“He controlled the company.”
“He controlled the records.”
“He controlled the people around him.”
A pause.
“And I thought if I followed his rules, my family would survive.”
Michael’s voice was cold.
“You helped him.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked everyone.
“I helped him.”
My anger rose.
“You knew what happened to Michael.”
“Yes.”
“You knew what happened to Sofia.”
“Yes.”
“You watched my mother suffer.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
For years, I wanted Margaret to admit what she had done.
I imagined feeling satisfied when she finally confessed.
But I didn’t.
I only felt tired.
Because the truth was painful.
Everyone involved had lost something.
“Who is Claire Hamilton?”
I asked.
Margaret looked at me.
“She was Richard’s sister.”
Michael frowned.
“His sister?”
Margaret nodded.
“She was the one who handled the records.”
“The identities?”
“Yes.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“The enemy was inside the family.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire had not been a stranger.
She had been family.
Someone trusted.
Someone close enough to access everything.
Someone who understood exactly how to erase people.
“But why?”
Andrew asked.
Margaret looked at him.
“Because Richard promised her power.”
“What kind of power?”
“The Hamilton empire.”
Everything came back to the same thing.
Power.
Always power.
That night, we searched old records.
And we found something unexpected.
Claire Hamilton was not dead.
She had disappeared.
Twenty years ago.
Taking one thing with her.
The original Hamilton family archive.
My father looked at the documents.
“She has everything.”
Michael nodded.
“Everything that proves what happened.”
I stared at the empty space where Claire’s name appeared.
A woman who had spent decades hiding.
A woman who knew every secret.
A woman who could destroy everything.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Mariana.”
My body froze.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“The person your mother tried to protect you from.”
My blood turned cold.
“Claire.”
Silence.
Then a quiet laugh.
“Yes.”
Everyone in the room heard.
Michael stepped forward.
“Where are you?”
Claire ignored him.
She spoke only to me.
“You think you know the truth.”
A pause.
“You don’t.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What do you want?”
Her answer was simple.
“I want my family back.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at me.
And I realized something.
The battle with Andrew was over.
The battle with Margaret was ending.
But the real enemy…
Had never been the people standing in front of us.
It had been the person hiding behind the entire story.
Claire Hamilton was alive.
She had the archive.
She had the secrets.
And she was coming back.
Not to apologize.
Not to confess.
But to take back what she believed belonged to her.
The Hamilton family had spent decades destroying others to protect their name.
Now the person who knew the most…
Was returning to claim it.
And this time…
The enemy was not outside the family.
May you like
The enemy had always been inside.
