CHAPTER 17

CHAPTER 17

THE FINAL BETRAYAL

The greatest betrayals are not committed by enemies.

Enemies announce themselves.

They arrive with anger in their eyes.

They make their intentions clear.

But betrayal…

Real betrayal…

Comes from the person you never thought you needed to fear.

The person who knew your weaknesses.

Your hopes.

Your secrets.

The person who stood close enough to hurt you.

I found Claire Hamilton exactly where she wanted me to.

Not hidden.

Not running.

Waiting.

The old Hamilton estate stood abandoned at the edge of the city.

A place nobody visited anymore.

A place history had forgotten.

The walls were cracked.

The gardens were overgrown.

The windows were covered in dust.

But Claire had chosen it carefully.

Because this was where everything began.

And where she believed everything would end.

When I entered the old mansion, I expected danger.

I expected guards.

I expected traps.

Instead…

I found silence.

A table.

Two chairs.

And Claire.

She looked nothing like the monster people described.

That was the most unsettling part.

She was calm.

Elegant.

Controlled.

An older woman with tired eyes.

The kind of person you might trust if you met her without knowing her history.

“Mariana.”

She smiled.

“You came.”

I stood several feet away.

“You knew I would.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked around the room.

“Because you are your mother’s daughter.”

I hated that she said it like a compliment.

Like being connected to my mother gave her some right to understand me.

“You stole my sister.”

Claire sighed.

“I saved her.”

“You erased her.”

“I protected her.”

“You destroyed families.”

She looked directly at me.

“And your family destroyed mine.”

The sentence stopped me.

Not because I believed her.

Because I had heard those words before.

Every person who caused harm believed they had a reason.

Every person who hurt others believed they were responding to something.

Pain became permission.

Fear became justification.

And eventually…

The victim became the villain.

“What did my family do to you?”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Your mother never told you?”

“No.”

“Of course she didn’t.”

A pause.

“She was always too kind.”

Claire walked toward the table.

She placed an old folder down.

“Everything you want is inside.”

I didn’t move.

“What is it?”

“The truth.”

I almost laughed.

Everyone claimed to have the truth.

Everyone had documents.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone believed their version was the only one that mattered.

“Why give it to me?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because I want you to understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That I am not the enemy.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Records.

Letters.

And one document that immediately caught my attention.

My mother’s name.

I picked it up.

My hands became cold.

It was a legal document.

A custody transfer.

A child relocation agreement.

And at the bottom…

A signature.

My mother’s signature.

I stared.

“No.”

Claire watched me carefully.

“Yes.”

My voice became quieter.

“My mother signed this?”

“Yes.”

For a moment…

Everything stopped.

Because the one thing I had always believed was certain suddenly became uncertain.

My mother.

The woman I believed was only protecting people.

The woman I believed was only a victim.

Had she been hiding something too?

Claire saw my expression.

“This is what I wanted you to see.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“That everyone has secrets.”

I refused to accept it.

“No.”

Claire tilted her head.

“No?”

“My mother was trying to fix what happened.”

“Yes.”

“But she didn’t cause it.”

Claire smiled.

“You still want to believe people are either good or bad.”

She touched the document.

“But real people are complicated.”

The door opened behind me.

I turned.

And froze.

Andrew stood there.

My first thought was betrayal.

My second thought was confusion.

“What are you doing here?”

He didn’t answer.

Claire smiled.

“Perfect timing.”

My heart sank.

“You brought him here?”

Andrew looked uncomfortable.

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

Silence.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

“Andrew.”

He looked at me.

“I wanted to help.”

I stared.

“Help?”

“Yes.”

“With what?”

His eyes moved toward Claire.

And that was enough.

The pain came instantly.

Not because Andrew was there.

Because for one second…

I believed he had changed.

“You knew.”

His face changed.

“Mariana…”

“You knew about this meeting.”

“I was trying to understand what she wanted.”

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Of course.”

“What?”

“Everyone always has a reason.”

Claire watched silently.

Enjoying the moment.

Because she understood something.

Betrayal did not need a knife.

Sometimes it only needed doubt.

Andrew stepped closer.

“I didn’t betray you.”

“No?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

He had no answer.

Because that was the truth.

Maybe he did not intend to hurt me.

Maybe he thought he was helping.

But he still made the same mistake.

He made decisions about my life without me.

Again.

“I spent years married to a man who thought he knew what was best for me.”

I looked at him.

“I am not going to spend the rest of my life surrounded by people who do the same thing.”

Andrew looked broken.

But this time…

I didn’t feel responsible for fixing him.

Claire smiled.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at her.

“Understand what?”

“That people always disappoint you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I understand something else.”

I stepped closer.

“People make mistakes.”

A pause.

“But mistakes do not excuse cruelty.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Because for the first time…

She realized I was not choosing between her and my family.

I was choosing myself.

Then the lights suddenly turned off.

The entire mansion went dark.

A second later…

A voice came through the speakers.

A voice I recognized.

Margaret.

“Claire.”

Everyone froze.

Claire looked around.

“What did you do?”

Margaret’s voice continued.

“You always believed you were the smartest person in the room.”

A pause.

“But you made the same mistake Richard made.”

Claire’s face changed.

“You.”

The lights returned.

And Margaret stood near the entrance.

Holding a small device.

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody expected her.

Not even Claire.

Margaret looked at me.

“I owe you the truth.”

I stared.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because I spent thirty years protecting monsters.”

Claire laughed.

“You think confession saves you?”

Margaret looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“I know it doesn’t.”

She walked forward.

“But I can still stop you.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You don’t have the power anymore.”

Margaret nodded.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“I lost my power.”

She looked at me.

“But she didn’t.”

Everyone looked toward me.

Margaret continued:

“That was always your mistake, Claire.”

“You believed power came from control.”

She pointed toward me.

“It comes from people who choose to stand together.”

Claire became silent.

Because she finally understood.

She had spent decades separating people.

Creating fear.

Creating secrets.

Creating weakness.

But now…

All the people she had tried to break were standing together.

Then Michael entered.

Behind him were investigators.

Legal representatives.

And one final person.

A woman.

Older.

Carrying a box of documents.

Claire stepped back.

“No.”

Michael looked at her.

“Yes.”

The woman opened the box.

“The original archive.”

Claire’s face lost all emotion.

Because she knew.

The final weapon was gone.

But before anyone could move…

Claire smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

“You still don’t know everything.”

Nobody spoke.

She looked directly at me.

“Your mother didn’t just hide your sister.”

A pause.

“She hid the reason why.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Claire stepped closer.

“The reason Sofia disappeared…”

She whispered:

“Was because someone wanted you to be the only heir.”

Silence.

Everyone looked at me.

And suddenly…

The final secret was revealed.

The betrayal was not only from the Hamilton family.

It was connected to my own blood.

Someone had chosen me.

Someone had sacrificed Sofia.

Someone had rewritten our lives.

And the worst part?

I knew exactly who could answer.

My mother.

But she was gone.

The truth we had spent decades searching for…

Had one final missing piece.

May you like

And that piece was about to destroy everything we believed.
