Chapter 10: The Diary

Chapter 10: The Diary

The morning sun rose over the city, but it brought no warmth.

Detective Nathan Carter stood in the evidence room, staring at the boxes recovered from the hidden basement before it collapsed. Most of the documents had been damaged by dust and falling concrete. Some were torn beyond recognition. Others were soaked by ruptured water pipes.

Yet one evidence bag remained untouched.

Inside was a small leather-bound journal.

Dark blue.

Worn around the edges.

No title.

Only a tiny silver butterfly embossed on the cover.

Nathan carefully opened the bag.

Inside the first page, written in graceful handwriting, were four simple words.

Eleanor Ashford's Journal.

"If You're Reading This..."

Nathan turned to the first entry.

The ink had faded slightly, but every word remained legible.

January 12

Victor smiled today.

Not because he was happy.

Because he won another business deal.

I remember when he smiled because Sophia learned to ride a bicycle.

Somewhere along the way...

Success became more important than family.

I don't know when that happened.

I only know I miss the man I married.

Nathan read the passage twice before closing the notebook.

Emily entered the room carrying a fresh forensic report.

"What did you find?"

Nathan held up the journal.

"Possibly the most important witness in this case."

The Safe Apartment

Daniel placed a cardboard box on the kitchen table.

"I've been meaning to give this to you."

Sophia looked inside.

Family photographs.

Birthday cards.

School drawings.

Letters.

And another notebook.

Smaller than the one found by police.

Its cover matched the silver butterfly necklace Eleanor had treasured.

Sophia looked up.

"My mother's diary?"

Daniel nodded.

"She kept two."

"Two?"

"One for herself."

He pointed toward the notebook.

"And one for you."

Sophia slowly opened it.

The first page made her eyes fill with tears.

For Sophia

If you're reading this before your eighteenth birthday...

Something has gone terribly wrong.

Her hands began to tremble.

Three Years Earlier

Dear Sophia,

Today you came home upset because another girl at school lied about you.

You asked me why people lie.

I told you that lies are easier than truth.

I wish I had been brave enough to tell you something else.

The most dangerous lies are the ones we tell ourselves.

Sophia closed her eyes.

She could almost hear her mother's voice reading the words aloud.

Daniel quietly stepped outside, giving her privacy.

Detective Carter

Nathan continued reading Eleanor's personal journal.

Each entry revealed another piece of Victor's transformation.

March 3

Victor forgot Sophia's piano recital.

He said the meeting was more important.

When he came home, he bought her an expensive gift.

He still believes money repairs disappointment.

Nathan turned another page.

Months later...

July 21

Daniel says I should go to the police.

I almost did today.

Then Sophia called.

She asked if Dad would make it to dinner.

I lied.

I said yes.

Nathan stopped reading.

Emily noticed the change in his expression.

"What is it?"

Nathan sighed.

"She wasn't just documenting crimes."

"She was documenting a marriage falling apart."

Somewhere Outside the City

Victor sat beside a small campfire deep within an abandoned hunting cabin.

Richard's departure had left him completely alone.

No lawyer.

No assistants.

No bodyguards.

Only silence.

He unfolded an old family photograph he had carried in his wallet for years.

It showed Eleanor holding a five-year-old Sophia on her shoulders.

Victor stood behind them, laughing.

The photograph had been taken before Riverside.

Before the lies.

Before everything changed.

A folded note slipped from behind the picture.

Victor frowned.

He had never noticed it before.

It was written in Eleanor's handwriting.

If you ever find this...

Remember the promise you made on our wedding day.

"No victory is worth losing ourselves."

Victor stared at the sentence.

His vision blurred.

He had forgotten saying those words.

She never had.

Sophia's Diary

She turned another page.

Dear Sophia,

There may come a day when you hear terrible things about your father.

Some of them will be true.

Some won't.

I want you to remember something.

Evil rarely arrives all at once.

It grows through small choices.

Every time we excuse one wrong decision...

The next one becomes easier.

Tears rolled silently down Sophia's cheeks.

She whispered,

"You still believed he could change."

Daniel, standing in the doorway, answered softly,

"She never stopped hoping."

A Forgotten Entry

Nathan reached the final pages of Eleanor's journal.

One entry had been written only two days before her death.

His heart pounded as he read.

October 18

I finally found proof.

Not only of Riverside...

But of someone else.

Someone Victor fears even more than prison.

If anything happens to me...

Look inside the grandfather clock.

Nathan frowned.

"Grandfather clock?"

Emily looked puzzled.

"There wasn't one in the mansion."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"Not anymore."

The Auction Record

Within an hour, Emily returned carrying old property records.

"You were right."

Nathan looked up.

"The Ashfords owned a nineteenth-century grandfather clock."

"What happened to it?"

Emily handed him the file.

"Sold at a private estate auction."

Nathan scanned the document.

The buyer's name had been blacked out.

But one line remained visible.

Item removed from residence three weeks before Eleanor's death.

Nathan looked toward the journal.

"Eleanor wanted us to find it."

The Last Letter

As evening settled over the safe apartment, Sophia reached the final page of her diary.

A sealed envelope had been tucked inside.

She carefully opened it.

The letter inside was dated the day before Eleanor died.

My dearest Sophia,

If this letter reaches you, then I couldn't protect you the way I wanted.

I know you'll be frightened.

I know you'll wonder if your father ever loved us.

The answer is yes.

That is what makes this tragedy so heartbreaking.

He loved us.

But he loved power more.

Never confuse love with goodness.

Sometimes people love deeply...

And still choose terribly.

If you ever have the chance to hate him...

Don't let hatred become your future.

Let truth become your future instead.

Promise me that.

I will always love you.

Mom.

Sophia pressed the letter against her chest and broke down in tears.

Daniel quietly sat beside her.

Neither of them spoke.

Some grief did not need words.

Elsewhere...

Victor stared into the dying campfire.

He could still hear Eleanor's voice inside his memory.

"No victory is worth losing ourselves."

He whispered the sentence aloud.

Then laughed bitterly.

"I lost long before I realized I was playing."

Far away, Detective Carter pinned a new note to the investigation board.

GRANDFATHER CLOCK

Unknown location.

Possible hidden evidence.

Another mystery.

Another thread.

And somewhere, hidden behind years of carefully planned deception, another secret was waiting to be uncovered—one that Eleanor had risked everything to leave behind.
