Chapter 7: Blood Money

Chapter 7: Blood Money
The hidden basement was deathly quiet.
Victor Ashford stood in the center of the room, surrounded by scattered files and overturned boxes. His flashlight swept wildly across shelves lined with decades of secrets. Every document he opened seemed to reveal another crime, another payoff, another life he had destroyed in the pursuit of power.
He had built an empire.
But its foundation had always been made of blood.
Thirty feet behind him, concealed in the darkness, Daniel Reeves held up a hand, signaling Sophia to stop.
"Not yet," he whispered.
Sophia could barely breathe. Through a narrow gap between two filing cabinets, she could see her father kneeling beside the old oak desk. His expensive suit was smeared with dust, his hands shaking as he searched through stacks of evidence.
She had never seen him look afraid.
Not once.
Until now.
Victor ripped open another file.
Inside was a thick folder labeled:
PROJECT RIVERSIDE
His heart sank.
He already knew what he would find.
Inspection reports.
Structural warnings.
Emails.
Every warning Daniel Reeves had ever submitted.
At the bottom of the folder lay a flash drive sealed in a plastic evidence bag.
Victor inserted it into an old laptop sitting on the desk.
The screen flickered to life.
One video file appeared.
CONFESSION.mp4
Victor hesitated.
Then he clicked.
The screen filled with Eleanor's face.
She looked exhausted, but determined.
"If you're watching this," she began, "it means I've either disappeared... or Victor has finally found the basement."
Victor froze.
Eleanor continued.
"I loved my husband once."
She paused, fighting back tears.
"But somewhere along the way, the man I married disappeared."
"The man who replaced him believed every problem could be solved with money."
"He forgot that some debts can never be paid."
Victor slammed the laptop shut.
"No."
He couldn't listen.
Not now.
Not ever.
Hidden in the shadows, Sophia pressed a trembling hand over her mouth.
She wanted to run to the laptop.
To hear her mother's voice again.
Daniel gently squeezed her shoulder.
"Patience."
Upstairs, the mansion's silence was broken by another sound.
The front door creaked open.
Detective Nathan Carter stepped inside.
No search warrant.
Not yet.
Only instinct.
Emily followed closely behind.
"Are you sure about this?" she whispered.
Carter nodded.
"Victor's car is here."
"But no one's answering."
He looked toward the staircase.
"And I don't believe guilty men sleep well."
Back in the basement, Victor resumed searching.
Another cabinet.
Another folder.
This one bore no title.
Inside were photographs.
One after another.
Victor meeting politicians.
Victor shaking hands with judges.
Victor passing envelopes to city officials.
Every picture had a date.
Every date matched a suspicious contract approval.
Victor whispered,
"Eleanor..."
"How?"
A voice answered from the darkness.
"Because she was smarter than you."
Victor spun around.
Daniel Reeves stepped into the light.
Sophia stood just behind him.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The three of them simply stared at one another.
Five years of silence...
Had finally come to an end.
Victor slowly straightened.
"I should've finished the job."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You've had five years."
"You still failed."
Victor's eyes shifted to Sophia.
"You came back."
She met his gaze without flinching.
"I came back for my mother."
Silence stretched between them.
Finally Victor sighed.
"I never wanted you involved."
Sophia laughed bitterly.
"You murdered Mom in front of me."
"You made me involved."
Victor took a cautious step forward.
"Sophia..."
"I know what you think you saw."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"What I think?"
"You hit her!"
Victor's voice rose.
"It was one mistake!"
Daniel interrupted.
"No."
"It was the last mistake."
"The first happened five years ago."
Victor's expression hardened.
"You know nothing."
Daniel's eyes flashed.
"I know about Riverside."
"I know about the bribes."
"I know about the workers."
"I know about every family you destroyed."
Victor laughed.
"And what did honesty ever get you?"
He gestured around the basement.
"You spent five years hiding in abandoned buildings."
"I built an empire."
Daniel answered quietly.
"You built a prison."
Victor's composure returned.
The confident businessman resurfaced.
"You think these files matter?"
He smiled.
"They're copies."
"I can hire better lawyers than you can imagine."
"I can buy experts."
"I can delay trials for years."
He looked at Sophia.
"And by then..."
"...everyone will have forgotten."
Sophia slowly shook her head.
"No."
"I won't."
Daniel walked toward the old desk and picked up another folder.
"This wasn't Eleanor's greatest secret."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
Daniel placed the folder on the desk.
"She found your offshore accounts."
Victor's smile vanished.
Daniel opened the file.
Bank statements spilled across the desk.
Millions of dollars transferred through shell companies in three different countries.
Payments disguised as consulting fees.
Construction expenses.
Investment returns.
Daniel looked directly at Victor.
"This isn't business money."
He paused.
"It's blood money."
Sophia flipped through the documents.
Each page carried names she had never seen.
Some belonged to companies.
Others to individuals.
One transfer caught her attention.
Payment Recipient: Michael Turner
Amount: $2,000,000
Purpose: Settlement
Sophia frowned.
"Who is Michael Turner?"
Daniel answered softly.
"The father of one of the workers who died."
Victor interrupted.
"He accepted the money."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"After someone threatened to take his remaining son away."
Sophia slowly looked at her father.
"You blackmailed him?"
Victor didn't answer.
His silence said enough.
At that exact moment...
Footsteps echoed down the hidden staircase.
Everyone turned.
Nathan Carter emerged from the darkness, his flashlight cutting through the room.
Behind him came Emily Brooks.
Carter stopped cold.
His eyes swept across the underground archive.
Shelves.
Evidence.
Victor.
Daniel.
Sophia.
Finally he spoke.
"So..."
"This is where the truth has been hiding."
Victor's face drained of color.
"Carter..."
The detective raised a hand.
"Don't."
He stepped farther into the room, carefully taking in every detail.
Files covered the floor.
The laptop.
The hidden camera blinking faintly in the corner.
He noticed everything.
Emily whispered,
"My God..."
Carter nodded.
"We're calling forensics."
Victor suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
The laugh grew louder.
Then stopped.
"You think you've won?"
He slowly reached into his jacket.
Emily instantly drew her service weapon.
"Don't move!"
Victor ignored her.
Sophia's heart pounded.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
Victor pulled out—
A small key fob.
He pressed one button.
Somewhere deep within the mansion...
A low mechanical rumble echoed through the walls.
Carter frowned.
"What did you do?"
Victor smiled for the first time all day.
"You really think I built this house without an escape plan?"
The floor beneath the oak desk began to vibrate.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
A hidden section of the basement wall slowly started to slide open.
Beyond it...
A narrow concrete tunnel disappeared into darkness.
Victor backed toward the opening.
Carter shouted,
"Victor Ashford!"
"Don't do this!"
Victor looked at Sophia one last time.
His expression was impossible to read.
Regret.
Fear.
Or calculation.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"I truly am."
Then he stepped into the tunnel.
The steel door slammed shut behind him.
A deafening boom echoed through the underground chamber.
The walls shook violently.
Chunks of stone crashed from the ceiling.
Emily grabbed Sophia.
Daniel shielded them both.
Carter shouted,
"Everybody out!"
As they raced toward the staircase, the hidden basement groaned around them.
Victor had escaped.
But he had left behind something far more dangerous than evidence.
The underground chamber was collapsing.
And buried beneath tons of stone were decades of corruption, murder...
May you like
...and the fortune that had been built with blood money.
