CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST BETRAYAL
The words on the page refused to blur.
They should have.
I wanted them to.
I wanted my eyes to be lying to me.
But they weren't.
IF CLARA EVER DISCOVERS THE TRUTH, ELIMINATE THE CHILDREN BEFORE SHE CAN RECLAIM THEM.
Underneath the sentence was Dr. Audrey Vance's signature.
The woman who had held my hand in the hospital.
The woman who had told me I was never infertile.
The woman who had promised to help me expose Julian and Sienna.
The woman who had stood beside me when I thought the truth had finally set me free.
She had been lying too.
Julian grabbed the document.
"We need to move."
I couldn't hear him.
I was still staring at Audrey's signature.
"She knew."
"Clara."
"She knew everything."
"Clara, look at me."
I finally did.
His face was pale.
"Where are the children?"
My stomach dropped.
"Maya is at the safe house."
"Amelia?"
"With her."
"Daniel?"
"With Vivian."
Julian froze.
I saw it immediately.
"What?"
He reached for his phone.
No signal.
He tried again.
Nothing.
"Julian?"
He looked at me.
"Vivian was supposed to take Daniel to the safe house."
My heart stopped.
"When?"
"Twenty minutes ago."
"Call her."
"I can't."
"Try again."
He did.
Straight to voicemail.
I felt cold all over.
"She took him."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
"She took my son."
"We don't know that."
"We know enough."
I grabbed my coat.
"We're going back."
"Clara, wait."
"No."
"We need the police."
"And while we wait?"
He said nothing.
I walked toward the vault door.
Then stopped.
Something on the desk had caught my attention.
A small envelope.
My name was written across it.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
I knew the handwriting.
My mother's.
I picked it up.
Julian came closer.
"Don't open it."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because everything in this place has been designed to hurt you."
I opened it anyway.
Inside was one page.
Only three sentences.
Clara, if you're reading this, Audrey has already betrayed you.
Do not trust the person who offers to save Daniel.
The last betrayal will come from the one person you still believe loves you.
I read the final sentence twice.
Then a third time.
My heart began pounding.
I slowly looked at Julian.
He stared back at me.
"What?" he asked.
I couldn't answer.
Because suddenly, I remembered every time he had told me he loved me.
Every time he had said he was protecting me.
Every time he had disappeared without explanation.
Every time someone close to me had betrayed me—
Julian had been somewhere nearby.
He had always known more than he admitted.
I took one step backward.
He noticed.
"Clara."
"Don't."
His face fell.
"You think it's me?"
"I don't know what to think anymore."
"I have never hurt your children."
"You signed the agreement."
"I was sixteen."
"You knew about Maya."
"Not at first."
"You knew about Amelia."
"Not until years later."
"You knew my father was alive."
"I discovered it."
"You knew the second embryo existed."
"I found the record."
"You always knew something."
"Yes."
"And you always chose not to tell me."
He looked down.
"Because every time I tried to tell you, someone died."
The room became silent.
"What?"
Julian swallowed.
"The first doctor who tried to expose the foundation was murdered."
"The lawyer who tried to help your mother disappeared."
"The nurse who delivered Maya died three days later."
"The man who helped me find Amelia was killed."
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I knew they'd come for you."
"They came anyway."
"I know."
He looked at me.
"And this time, I won't let them take you."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
But my mother's final warning echoed in my head.
The last betrayal will come from the one person you still believe loves you.
We left the Blackwood estate through the underground garage.
Julian drove.
I sat in the passenger seat.
Neither of us spoke.
Snow fell across the windshield.
Every few seconds, I checked my phone.
Nothing.
No message from Maya.
No message from Vivian.
No call from Amelia.
Then—
my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice said:
"Your son is alive."
My blood froze.
"Who are you?"
"Someone who knows where he is."
"Give him back."
A quiet laugh.
"You're not in a position to demand anything."
"Where is Daniel?"
"Come alone."
Julian reached for the phone.
I pulled it away.
"Where?"
"St. Jude."
My stomach tightened.
"Where in St. Jude?"
"The old maternity ward."
"When?"
"Now."
The line went dead.
Julian looked at me.
"Who was it?"
"They have Daniel."
"I heard."
"We're going."
"Absolutely not."
I turned toward him.
"He's my son."
"And that's exactly why you can't walk into a trap."
"I don't care."
"I do."
"You don't get to decide."
"I know."
He looked at me.
"But I'll come with you."
I shook my head.
"They said alone."
"I don't care."
"Julian—"
"I'm not losing you again."
Something inside me cracked.
For one second, I forgot everything.
The lies.
The divorce.
The betrayal.
I remembered the man I married.
The man who used to make coffee for me before sunrise.
The man who had held my hand during every fertility treatment.
The man who had cried when the doctor told us the treatment had failed.
Maybe that man had never disappeared.
Maybe he had simply been buried beneath too many secrets.
I whispered:
"Don't make me regret trusting you."
He looked at me.
"I won't."
The old maternity ward was dark.
Abandoned.
Dust covered the floor.
The emergency lights flickered.
Julian entered first.
I followed.
"Daniel!"
My voice echoed.
No answer.
We walked farther.
Then I heard crying.
A baby's cry.
My heart nearly stopped.
"Daniel."
I ran.
Julian grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
A figure stepped from the darkness.
Vivian.
She was holding Daniel.
My relief was immediate.
Then I saw the gun in her hand.
She pointed it at Julian.
"Stop."
Julian froze.
I stared at her.
"Vivian."
She smiled.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at Daniel.
He was crying.
"Give him to me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I do, they'll kill me."
"Who?"
She looked behind her.
Audrey Vance stepped into the light.
My blood went cold.
She looked exactly as she had at St. Jude.
Elegant.
Calm.
Perfect.
Except now there was no kindness in her eyes.
"Hello, Clara."
I couldn't speak.
Audrey smiled.
"You finally found the truth."
I looked at Vivian.
"You betrayed me."
Vivian began crying.
"I had no choice."
"Everyone says that."
Audrey stepped closer.
"You should stop blaming them."
"Why?"
"Because they were afraid."
"And you?"
"I've never been afraid."
I looked at Daniel.
"What do you want?"
"Your son."
"Why?"
"Because he's the final proof."
"Proof of what?"
Audrey's smile disappeared.
"That the treatment works."
I felt sick.
"You've been experimenting on children."
"No."
"You signed the document."
"Yes."
"Then you ordered my children killed."
"Only if necessary."
My blood boiled.
"You call that necessary?"
"Your children were never supposed to belong to you."
I stepped forward.
"They're not property."
Audrey laughed.
"That's what your father used to say."
I froze.
"What?"
"Your father didn't create the program."
She looked at me.
"He inherited it."
"From whom?"
"Your grandfather."
I stared at her.
"Elias?"
"No."
She smiled.
"From your mother."
Silence.
My heart stopped.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
Audrey continued.
"Your mother began the research long before Richard ever knew about it."
I shook my head.
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a photograph.
My mother.
Young.
Standing in a laboratory.
Beside her was a woman I recognized.
Dr. Vance.
My mother was holding a newborn baby.
Not Maya.
Not Amelia.
Someone else.
I felt sick.
"Who is that?"
Audrey's eyes gleamed.
"The first successful subject."
"Your mother called her Subject Zero."
I stared at the photograph.
"What happened to her?"
Audrey smiled.
"She survived."
"Where is she?"
Audrey looked toward me.
"Closer than you think."
A sound came from behind us.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Julian turned.
A man emerged from the darkness.
Richard.
My father.
I stared at him.
"You escaped."
He looked at Audrey.
"She let me."
Audrey nodded.
"Of course."
I stepped backward.
"What's happening?"
Richard looked at me.
"Clara, you need to listen."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
"You don't."
"Then tell me."
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"The experiment wasn't designed to create children like Maya and Amelia."
"Then what?"
"It was designed to recreate someone."
"Who?"
He looked at the photograph.
"Your mother."
My blood froze.
"What?"
Richard continued.
"Your mother wasn't merely a researcher."
"She was the first successful subject."
I couldn't breathe.
"That's impossible."
"She survived the treatment."
"She passed the mutation to you."
"Then you passed it to your children."
I stared at him.
"So all of this..."
"Was an attempt to recreate her genetic resistance."
I looked at Audrey.
"Why?"
"Because she was dying."
Audrey's voice became softer.
"Your mother had the mutation, but it was unstable."
"She developed the disease."
"She wanted to save herself."
I shook my head.
"And she used me."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The truth hit harder than any physical blow.
My mother.
The woman I had spent my entire life believing had protected me.
Had started this.
Maybe she had loved me.
Maybe she had tried to protect me.
But she had also made me part of the experiment.
She had created the lie that destroyed my marriage.
She had given them access to my body.
My children.
My life.
I whispered:
"Where is she?"
Audrey smiled.
"Dead."
I froze.
"She died six months ago."
I looked at Richard.
"You knew."
He nodded.
"I was with her."
"She never told me."
"She was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of what you'd become if you knew."
I laughed bitterly.
"I became exactly what everyone wanted."
A mother carrying three children.
A woman desperate for answers.
A daughter trapped between two monsters.
Then I looked at Daniel.
And something changed.
Fear disappeared.
I stepped toward Audrey.
"Give me my son."
"No."
"You've taken everything from me."
"Not everything."
I looked at her.
"What else do you want?"
She smiled.
"You."
The lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot exploded.
Vivian screamed.
Daniel began crying.
Julian lunged forward.
I dropped to the floor.
Someone grabbed my wrist.
I fought.
Hard.
Then I heard Maya's voice.
"Mom!"
I looked up.
She was standing in the doorway.
Amelia was beside her.
Both were holding flashlights.
Behind them stood Sienna.
Pale.
Weak.
But alive.
She had escaped the hospital.
Sienna looked at Audrey.
"You should have killed me."
Audrey raised her gun.
Sienna smiled.
"You made the same mistake everyone else made."
"What mistake?"
"You thought I was weak."
Sienna pulled out a small device.
Pressed a button.
Every screen in the maternity ward turned on.
Audrey's face changed.
Video recordings appeared.
Secret meetings.
Payments.
Medical procedures.
Names.
Faces.
Everything.
Sienna had recorded them.
For years.
I stared at her.
"You had evidence."
She nodded.
"I knew one day I'd need it."
Audrey screamed:
"Turn it off!"
Sienna laughed.
"No."
She looked at me.
"This time, the truth belongs to everyone."
The doors burst open.
Federal agents stormed inside.
Audrey tried to run.
Julian tackled her.
Richard surrendered.
Vivian dropped her weapon.
The room exploded into chaos.
I reached Daniel.
Vivian handed him to me.
I held him against my chest.
He stopped crying.
I kissed his forehead.
"I'm here."
He grabbed my finger.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in years—
I felt safe.
Then I heard Maya scream.
"Mom!"
I turned.
She was pointing at one of the screens.
A final video had appeared.
My mother's face.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting alone in a hospital room.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Clara."
My heart stopped.
"If you're seeing this, I'm already gone."
Tears filled my eyes.
"I know you hate me."
"I deserve it."
"But there is one thing you must know."
She took a breath.
"The child they are searching for isn't Amelia."
I froze.
"What?"
My mother's voice continued.
"Amelia was never the final subject."
Julian stared at the screen.
Sienna went pale.
Richard whispered:
"No."
My mother looked toward the camera.
"The final subject is the child Clara is carrying now."
I couldn't breathe.
I looked down at myself.
My hands began shaking.
"What child?"
The room went silent.
Julian stared at me.
"Clara..."
I backed away.
"No."
My mother continued.
"The fertility treatment you believed failed..."
"It didn't."
"The pregnancy was successful."
"The embryo was implanted."
"Your body rejected the pregnancy before you knew."
I felt dizzy.
Then came the final sentence.
"But before the miscarriage, the doctors removed the embryo."
My heart stopped.
"They never destroyed it."
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then I whispered:
"My child..."
Richard closed his eyes.
Audrey smiled.
And I understood.
The last betrayal wasn't about the child I had already lost.
It was about the child they had been keeping from me all along.
The one they had frozen.
The one they had hidden.
The one they had waited years to recover.
And suddenly, the entire room seemed to understand the same terrifying thing.
May you like
Someone still had my unborn child.
And they had just learned that I knew.
