Chapter 2: The House That Was Never Empty

Janet’s voice broke the silence first.

“Carolyn
 this isn’t just cheating.”

I didn’t look away from the screen.

“I know.”

The forged signature on the loan modification wasn’t just sloppy fraud.

It was confident fraud.

Someone had been signing as me for months.

Maybe longer.

Janet leaned closer.

“That house in Ashland
Lindsay’s name is on the deed.”

I nodded slowly.

“And it was built with my company’s money.”

Emma stirred in the next room.

Her tiny cry pulled me back into the present.

For a second, I almost forgot how to breathe.

Then my phone lit up again.

Unknown Number:
You cannot keep them from me.

Janet immediately stood up.

“We need to move again.”

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“We need to stop running.”

I turned the laptop toward her.

“There’s a paper trail. A clean one. He made sure of it.”

Janet frowned.

“Made sure of what?”

“That everything he stole
 looks legal.”

I clicked one more folder.

And that’s when I saw it.

A final document.

Signed two days before my C-section.

A guardianship contingency plan.

If something happened to Daniel

Or if I was deemed “unfit”

Custody would automatically transfer to Lindsay Parker.

Janet went pale.

“He was never planning to raise them alone.”

May you like

“No,” I whispered.

“He was planning to erase me.”
