CHAPTER 2 — The Court Saw Everything

The hallway became perfectly silent.

Judge Nathaniel Brooks stood in the doorway without saying a word.

He had seen the slap.

He had heard the threat.

Every syllable.

The husband, Victor Hale, forced a nervous smile.

"Your Honor... this is just a misunderstanding."

The judge didn't answer.

Instead, he pressed the emergency alarm beside the courtroom entrance.

Within seconds, two court marshals ran into the hallway.

"Sir?"

Judge Brooks pointed directly at Victor.

"Detain him."

Victor laughed.

"You can't arrest me over a family argument."

The judge's expression never changed.

"I didn't witness an argument."

"I witnessed an assault."

"And I heard what appears to be a threat intended to interfere with a court proceeding."

The laughter disappeared from Victor's face.
