Chapter 1: The Meal She Was Never Allowed to Eat

Chapter 1: The Meal She Was Never Allowed to Eat
Emma Carter had learned to eat in silence.
Not because anyone had asked her to.
Because silence attracted less attention.
Every night, after the chefs finished preparing extravagant dinners for guests in the Hawthorne Estate, she waited until everyone else had left the kitchen.
Only then would she gather the leftovers that had been scraped from expensive porcelain plates.
Sometimes there was a piece of bread.
Sometimes a spoonful of soup.
Sometimes...
Nothing.
House Manager Victoria Graves insisted that servants who "didn't meet expectations" didn't deserve full meals.
Emma's wages had also been cut for weeks.
Broken vase.
Late laundry.
Missing silverware.
Every accusation came with another deduction from her paycheck.
Emma never argued.
She knew she hadn't done any of those things.
But no one listened to the youngest maid.
That night, she sat on the cold marble floor beside the pantry, quietly eating a few scraps of roast chicken from a chipped plate.
Tears rolled down her face.
She wasn't crying because of hunger anymore.
She was crying because she had forgotten what it felt like to be treated with kindness.
Then...
The kitchen doors opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the room.
Victoria immediately straightened her posture.
"Mr. Hawthorne... I wasn't expecting you."
The billionaire owner had returned from an overseas business trip a day earlier than anyone knew.
Alexander Hawthorne rarely visited the staff kitchen.
But tonight...
Something had drawn him there.
His eyes landed on the girl sitting on the floor.
Then on the nearly empty plate.
Then on the bruises hidden beneath her sleeves.
The room became deathly silent.
"Why," he asked quietly,
May you like
"...is one of my employees eating scraps off the floor?"
No one answered.
