PART 6 — MARCELA'S PHOTOGRAPH

PART 6 — MARCELA'S PHOTOGRAPH
The photograph had been sitting on Alejandro's desk for three days.
He had looked at it dozens of times.
A blurred figure.
A dark corridor.
A man-shaped shadow disappearing through the back entrance of the mansion at two in the morning.
The photograph that had started everything.
The photograph that had convinced him Valeria was hiding a lover.
The photograph that had made him storm into her bedroom, tear away her blanket, and discover Lucía instead.
Now, staring at it again, Alejandro felt something he had never allowed himself to feel before.
Shame.
He had believed it.
Not because the photograph was convincing.
Because he had wanted to believe it.
It had been easier to believe that Valeria was betraying him than to believe his own family was capable of manipulating him.
And Marcela had known exactly which lie to give him.
Alejandro picked up his phone.
He opened the original message.
I'm sorry to tell you this, brother... but I think Valeria is making a fool of you.
Underneath it was the photograph.
No explanation.
No date.
No location.
Just the image.
He zoomed in.
The figure was almost impossible to identify.
A dark coat.
A narrow shoulder.
A slight limp.
Alejandro froze.
He enlarged the image again.
There was something about the person's posture.
He had seen it before.
Not in the photograph.
In the house.
He opened another file.
A photograph of Rafael.
Then another.
Then a security image from six months earlier.
The same posture.
The same slight tilt of the left shoulder.
Alejandro's stomach tightened.
The man in Marcela's photograph might have been Rafael.
But that created another question.
Why would Marcela send him a photograph of Rafael and tell him it was Valeria's lover?
Unless that was exactly what she wanted him to believe.
He found Marcela in the guesthouse.
She was sitting beside the window with a cup of untouched coffee.
When Alejandro entered, she looked up.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“I know.”
Her eyes immediately moved toward his hand.
He was holding the photograph.
Marcela's face changed.
Only slightly.
But Alejandro noticed.
“You recognize it.”
“No.”
“Look at it.”
“I've seen it.”
“You sent it to me.”
Marcela remained silent.
“You told me Valeria was meeting another man.”
“I told you what I thought.”
“No.”
Alejandro placed the photograph on the table.
“You told me what you wanted me to think.”
Marcela's eyes filled with tears.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
She looked toward the door.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because they listen.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“Who?”
Marcela lowered her voice.
“Everyone.”
She led him into the old greenhouse.
It had been abandoned for years.
The glass roof was covered in dust.
Dead vines hung from the walls.
No cameras.
No security guards.
Marcela closed the door.
“I didn't take the photograph.”
Alejandro frowned.
“Then who did?”
“I don't know.”
“But you sent it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because they told me to.”
“Who?”
Marcela shook her head.
“You won't believe me.”
“Try.”
She looked directly at him.
“Rafael.”
Alejandro felt the blood drain from his face.
“You've been in contact with him?”
“He contacted me.”
“When?”
“Months ago.”
“Why?”
“He knew about Lucía.”
“What did he want?”
“You.”
Alejandro stepped closer.
“Why?”
Marcela's voice trembled.
“Because you were getting too close to the truth.”
He looked down at the photograph.
“And Valeria?”
“Valeria was never the target.”
“Then why frame her?”
“Because you trust her.”
Alejandro stared.
Marcela continued.
“They knew that if they made you believe she was cheating, you would turn against her yourself.”
“And you helped them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcela looked away.
“Because they threatened my children.”
Silence.
Alejandro's anger faltered.
“What did they threaten?”
“They sent me photographs of my son leaving school.”
He froze.
“They knew his schedule.”
She began crying.
“They told me that if I refused, he would disappear.”
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
“So you betrayed Valeria.”
“I thought I was protecting my family.”
“You destroyed mine.”
“I know.”
Alejandro picked up the photograph.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
Marcela wiped her eyes.
“Rafael gave me the image.”
“You didn't take it?”
“No.”
“Where did he get it?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did he want me to see it?”
“Because the image wasn't supposed to prove Valeria was cheating.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“It was supposed to make you ask questions.”
“What questions?”
“Where was she going?”
“Who was she meeting?”
“Why was she hiding things?”
Marcela paused.
“Rafael knew you would investigate.”
“And?”
“And he needed you to investigate the wrong person.”
Alejandro understood.
“They wanted me focused on Valeria.”
“Yes.”
“While they moved Lucía.”
Marcela nodded.
“Exactly.”
Alejandro's eyes hardened.
“Where?”
Marcela shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
“Then what did Rafael say?”
She hesitated.
“He said the woman beneath the blanket couldn't be allowed to speak.”
Alejandro froze.
“He knew Lucía was in my bedroom?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Marcela looked terrified.
“Because he was the one who put her there.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“What?”
“Not physically.”
“Then who?”
“Your mother.”
He stepped back.
“Why?”
“To make you believe Valeria was hiding something.”
Alejandro's mind raced.
The entire sequence suddenly made sense.
Valeria had locked herself in the bedroom because she was protecting Lucía.
Marcela had photographed someone leaving the mansion.
Alejandro had been given the photograph.
He had believed Valeria was having an affair.
He had confronted her.
He had pulled away the blanket.
And the moment he discovered Lucía, the family had gained exactly what they wanted.
Panic.
Confusion.
A reason for everyone to accuse everyone else.
And while Alejandro was distracted, someone could move the evidence.
“Wait.”
Alejandro looked at Marcela.
“What was the photograph actually showing?”
“I don't know.”
“You must.”
Marcela shook her head.
“I only saw the version Rafael sent me.”
“Show me.”
“I deleted it.”
“You still have it.”
“No.”
“Marcela.”
She hesitated.
Then pulled out her phone.
Her hands shook as she opened an encrypted folder.
There were dozens of photographs.
Security images.
Addresses.
Documents.
Alejandro saw his own house.
His office.
Valeria entering a hospital.
Lucía in a wheelchair.
His heart stopped.
Then he saw the original photograph.
It was different.
The cropped version Marcela had sent him showed only the back entrance.
The original was wider.
Much wider.
Alejandro stared.
The photograph showed the mansion's rear courtyard.
The dark figure was not leaving.
He was carrying someone.
A woman.
Her face was hidden.
But her clothing was visible.
A long gray coat.
Alejandro recognized it.
“That's Lucía.”
Marcela nodded.
“I know.”
“When was this taken?”
“Three days before I sent it.”
Alejandro looked at the timestamp.
His hands tightened around the phone.
“Lucía was already here.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Rafael need me to think Valeria had a lover?”
“Because he needed you angry enough to confront her.”
“Why?”
Marcela swallowed.
“Because they needed to know whether she had told you about the room.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“What room?”
“The room beneath the house.”
His blood ran cold.
“They knew about it?”
“Yes.”
“Did they know we found it?”
Marcela's silence answered him.
Alejandro's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
Stop asking Marcela questions.
He looked at Marcela.
She had received the same message.
Then another arrived.
The next photograph will not be of Valeria.
A third.
It will be of your child.
Alejandro's face went white.
Valeria was at the hospital.
She had been there since the previous evening after collapsing from stress.
Alejandro drove through the city without remembering the traffic lights.
When he arrived, he found her sitting beside a window.
She looked exhausted.
But when she saw him, she smiled faintly.
“You're back.”
Alejandro stopped in the doorway.
“I owe you an apology.”
Valeria looked at him.
“For what?”
“For believing them.”
She said nothing.
“I saw a photograph.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were hiding a man.”
Valeria's eyes lowered.
“I wasn't.”
“I know.”
She looked up.
“You didn't know.”
“No.”
Alejandro crossed the room.
“I should have trusted you.”
Valeria stared at him.
“You should have asked me.”
“I was angry.”
“You were manipulated.”
“I still made the choice.”
She looked away.
He sat beside her.
“I found out who took the photograph.”
“Who?”
“Rafael.”
Valeria's expression changed.
“You found him?”
“He contacted me.”
“Then you're in danger.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“He didn't want you to find him.”
“Why?”
“Because he wants you to find something else.”
Alejandro frowned.
“What?”
“Me.”
He stared.
“What do you mean?”
Valeria reached for his hand.
“They want you to believe I'm part of this.”
“Why?”
“Because if you stop trusting me, you'll have nobody left.”
Alejandro's chest tightened.
Valeria whispered:
“That is how they win.”
That night, Alejandro returned home alone.
He entered the bedroom.
The blanket was still folded at the foot of the bed.
The same blanket he had torn away days earlier.
He stared at it.
Then he noticed something.
A small white envelope beneath the pillow.
No name.
No stamp.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Valeria.
Sleeping.
Taken from inside the bedroom.
Alejandro's blood ran cold.
On the back was a sentence.
You believed the first photograph.
He turned it over.
Will you believe the second?
Then he noticed something in the corner of the image.
A reflection in the bedroom mirror.
Someone standing behind the camera.
Alejandro enlarged it.
The face was partially visible.
He knew that face.
His uncle.
Rafael.
But Rafael wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was another person.
A woman.
Alejandro stared.
The woman was older.
Her hair was gray.
Her face was thin.
But there was no mistaking her.
He had seen her photograph hundreds of times.
His mother.
Esther.
Alejandro's hands began to shake.
If the photograph was recent, then Esther and Rafael had been working together.
But Esther was in police custody.
And Rafael was supposedly dead.
The photograph should have been impossible.
Then Alejandro noticed the timestamp.
It had been taken that morning.
Inside his bedroom.
While he was at the hospital.
He slowly lowered the photograph.
Someone had entered his house.
Someone had stood beside his bed.
Someone had watched Valeria sleep.
And someone wanted him to know they could reach her whenever they wanted.
His phone rang.
He answered.
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Rafael.
“You finally understand.”
Alejandro's voice was cold.
“What do you want?”
“What I've always wanted.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
“You've killed people for it.”
“No.”
Rafael laughed softly.
“I've killed people to keep the truth from coming out.”
Alejandro clenched his fist.
“Where is Elena?”
A pause.
Then:
“Closer than you think.”
“Where?”
“You keep looking underground.”
Alejandro froze.
Rafael continued.
“You should look above you.”
The line went dead.
Alejandro looked toward the ceiling.
Then toward the attic.
For the first time, he noticed a faint sound above the bedroom.
A floorboard creaked.
Someone was walking.
Inside the house.
Alejandro reached for the gun he had taken from his father's office.
He stepped into the hallway.
The footsteps stopped.
He climbed the stairs slowly.
The attic door was open.
A thin line of light spilled across the floor.
Alejandro pushed it wider.
The room was empty.
Except for a single chair.
And on the chair sat another photograph.
He picked it up.
His hands froze.
The photograph showed Elena.
Alive.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
Holding a newborn baby.
And behind her was a young Marcela.
On the back were four words:
Ask Marcela what happened.
Alejandro stared at the photograph.
He finally understood why Marcela had been so afraid.
She hadn't merely been helping Rafael.
She had seen what happened to Elena.
And she had been carrying that secret for twenty-six years.
Alejandro turned toward the attic door.
Marcela was standing there.
Her face was covered in tears.
“I was there,” she whispered.
Alejandro stared at her.
“What happened?”
Marcela stepped inside.
“I saw them take Elena.”
“Who?”
She closed the door behind her.
“Your mother.”
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
“And Rafael?”
Marcela shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Marcela looked directly into his eyes.
“The person who ordered it…”
She paused.
“…was your father.”
Alejandro stopped breathing.
Because suddenly, the story he had been chasing no longer had a simple villain.
His father had claimed he tried to save Elena.
His mother had been accused of taking her.
Rafael had been hiding in the shadows.
And Marcela had just revealed that Rodrigo himself might have started everything.
The truth was no longer buried.
May you like
It was beginning to rise.
And when it finally reached the surface, Alejandro would have to decide whether he was ready to destroy the family that had raised him.
