Chapter 14 — The Truth About Margot’s Daughter

Chapter 14 — The Truth About Margot’s Daughter

The phone went silent.

Margot stood frozen beside the conference table, Adrian's final words still echoing in her mind.

“Eleanor.”

Not Walter.

Not Priscilla.

Eleanor.

Her grandmother.

The woman who had claimed she spent thirty years protecting the Wren bloodline.

Margot slowly lowered Daniel's phone.

“No one leaves.”

Vance looked at her.

“Margot—”

“No.”

Her voice was different now.

Steady.

Cold.

“If Adrian is alive, we're finding him.”

Elena stepped beside her.

“And if Grandma is looking for him?”

Margot looked at the ledger.

“Then we find him first.”

They spent the next hour searching the ledger.

Every page.

Every code.

Every reference to Project Vale.

Nothing.

Then Elena noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed to a number written in the margin.

317.

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?”

“I've seen it before.”

“Where?”

Elena reached beneath her collar and pulled out the silver pendant.

She turned it over.

Three numbers were engraved inside.

3-1-7.

Margot stared.

“Your pendant.”

Elena nodded.

“Grandma gave it to me.”

Vance took the ledger.

He compared the markings.

The symbol on the pendant matched the seal stamped beside Project Vale.

“This isn't jewelry,” he said.

Margot frowned.

“Then what is it?”

“A key.”

Daniel examined the pendant.

“A key to what?”

Vance turned several pages.

“There's an access code here.”

He entered the numbers.

Nothing happened.

Then Elena touched the pendant to the page.

A small light appeared beneath the seal.

Everyone stepped back.

The ledger's hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a thin black drive.

Margot stared.

“That's what they were hiding.”

Daniel picked it up.

“No label.”

Elena whispered:

“There is one.”

She pointed to the bottom.

A tiny inscription.

GENERATION THREE.

Margot's heart tightened.

“My daughter.”

The drive contained one video.

No date.

No name.

Margot pressed play.

The screen showed Eleanor.

Much younger.

Standing in a hospital room.

She was holding a newborn baby.

Margot stopped breathing.

The camera moved closer.

The baby had a small birthmark beneath her left shoulder.

Margot touched her own shoulder.

She had the same mark.

Eleanor looked into the camera.

“If you're watching this, Margot, then everything has gone wrong.”

Margot's eyes filled with tears.

Eleanor continued.

“You will believe your daughter is the final heir.”

A pause.

“She isn't.”

Margot's heart sank.

“She is something more important.”

The video changed.

A series of medical records appeared.

Blood samples.

Genetic sequences.

Wren family records.

Vale records.

Landry records.

Then one final line:

GENERATION THREE: 100% COMPATIBILITY.

Daniel whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Vance stared at the screen.

“It means the child isn't merely an heir.”

“What is she?”

Vance hesitated.

“She is the biological trigger.”

Margot looked at him.

“Trigger for what?”

“The trust.”

“No.”

Vance pointed to the next document.

“For the entire Wren estate.”

Margot's face went pale.

The fortune.

The patents.

The hidden companies.

Everything.

All of it had been designed around a child who hadn't even been born yet.

Then the video showed Eleanor again.

“This child must never be delivered into the hands of Walter.”

Margot whispered:

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about my daughter before she was born.”

Daniel nodded.

“That means the pregnancy was never accidental.”

Margot turned toward him.

“What?”

Daniel looked confused.

“The timing.”

“What timing?”

“The trust was activated the night you conceived.”

Margot froze.

“That isn't possible.”

Daniel opened the ledger.

A date appeared.

The date of Margot and Daniel's wedding.

Beneath it:

GENERATION THREE — CONCEPTION WINDOW.

Margot stepped backward.

“No.”

Daniel stared at the page.

“They knew.”

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

Margot's memories came rushing back.

The wedding.

The champagne.

The strange dizziness afterward.

The unexplained medical examination.

The weeks of exhaustion.

She had assumed it was stress.

But someone had been monitoring her.

Someone had planned it.

She looked at Daniel.

“Were you involved?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did your father know?”

“Yes.”

“Did your mother know?”

Daniel hesitated.

Margot's expression hardened.

“Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“She knew.”

They found Priscilla in the detention center.

She sat behind the glass.

No makeup.

No jewelry.

No designer clothes.

But her eyes were sharp.

She smiled when Margot entered.

“I wondered when you'd come.”

Margot sat.

“You knew about my daughter.”

Priscilla's smile disappeared.

“Yes.”

“You knew before I did.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Priscilla leaned forward.

“Because your pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen naturally.”

Margot felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

Priscilla looked at Daniel.

“Your father arranged it.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Priscilla continued.

“Walter had access to your medical records.”

“He knew when you were fertile.”

“He knew when you were vulnerable.”

“He wanted the third-generation heir.”

Margot's hands began shaking.

“You're saying he planned my pregnancy?”

“Yes.”

“Who was the father?”

Priscilla looked at Daniel.

“You were.”

Margot stared.

Priscilla nodded.

“But Walter manipulated the circumstances.”

Daniel's face went white.

“How?”

Priscilla shook her head.

“I don't know everything.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

Priscilla looked toward the door.

“Your daughter carries something that shouldn't exist.”

Margot leaned closer.

“What?”

Priscilla whispered:

“Three bloodlines.”

Margot frowned.

“Wren.”

“Vale.”

“Landry.”

Margot's face went blank.

“My daughter is Wren and Landry.”

“Yes.”

“But Vale?”

Priscilla nodded.

“That's the part everyone has been hiding.”

Daniel stared.

“Who was the Vale?”

Priscilla answered:

“Adrian.”

Margot's heart raced.

“But Adrian is Walter's son.”

“Yes.”

“And Eleanor's.”

“Yes.”

“So how does my daughter carry his blood?”

Priscilla smiled.

“Because Adrian isn't only Walter's son.”

She paused.

“He is your father's son too.”

Margot stared.

“What?”

Priscilla continued.

“Adrian's birth was altered.”

“His genetic material was used in Project Vale.”

Margot felt dizzy.

“Used how?”

Priscilla looked at her.

“Your daughter was created from it.”

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Priscilla nodded.

“Before you were married, Walter collected biological samples from several members of the family.”

“Your father.”

“Adrian.”

“Eleanor.”

“And you.”

Margot's face drained of color.

“You're saying…”

Priscilla finished the sentence.

“Your daughter carries genetic material from the Wren line that predates both you and Daniel.”

Margot stood.

“That is impossible.”

“Science made it possible.”

“Why?”

“Because Walter wanted an heir no single branch of the family could claim.”

Margot stared at her.

“A child that belongs to everyone.”

“No.”

Priscilla shook her head.

“A child who belongs to no one.”

Daniel turned away.

He looked devastated.

“My daughter…”

Margot corrected him.

“Our daughter.”

He nodded.

“Our daughter.”

Priscilla's voice softened.

“She was never meant to be a person in their eyes.”

“She was a key.”

“A biological key.”

Margot's eyes filled with tears.

She placed her hand over her stomach.

“No.”

Priscilla watched her.

“What?”

“My daughter is not a key.”

Margot looked directly at her.

“She is not an inheritance.”

“She is not an experiment.”

“She is not a weapon.”

“She is my child.”

Priscilla nodded.

“And that's why Walter is afraid of you.”

When they returned to the estate, Elena was waiting.

She held a photograph.

“I found this.”

Margot took it.

A laboratory.

A young Eleanor.

A newborn Adrian.

And another woman.

Margot recognized her immediately.

Her own grandmother.

But beside Eleanor stood someone else.

Adrian's father.

A man Margot had never seen.

At the bottom of the photograph:

DR. LUCIAN VALE.

Margot stared.

“Who is he?”

Elena answered:

“Adrian's real father.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You said Walter was his father.”

“He believed he was.”

Margot frowned.

“Then who is Lucian?”

Elena's voice became quiet.

“The scientist who created Project Vale.”

They searched the database.

Lucian Vale.

Nothing.

No birth record.

No death record.

No passport.

No company.

No university history.

He didn't exist.

Until Vance found something.

An old laboratory license.

Issued to:

L.V. RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Location:

Geneva, Switzerland.

Status:

Active.

Margot stared.

“Active?”

Vance nodded.

“Someone has been paying the taxes.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty-nine years.”

Margot looked at Daniel.

“Then Lucian may still be alive.”

They flew to Geneva the following morning.

The laboratory stood outside the city.

Hidden behind a forest.

No sign.

No guards.

No lights.

But the door opened when Elena touched her pendant against the lock.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Medical records.

Photographs.

DNA samples.

And one room filled with photographs of children.

Margot walked slowly past them.

Then stopped.

Her daughter's photograph was on the wall.

She hadn't been born yet when it was taken.

But there she was.

Ultrasound image.

Name:

SUBJECT G-317.

Margot's knees nearly gave out.

Daniel caught her.

“Margot.”

She pushed him away.

“No.”

She looked at the photograph.

“Someone has been planning her entire life.”

Then they heard footsteps.

Everyone froze.

A man's voice came from the darkness.

“You shouldn't have come.”

Vance reached for his weapon.

“Show yourself.”

A tall older man stepped into the light.

White hair.

Thin glasses.

A scar running across his cheek.

Margot stared.

“Lucian Vale?”

He nodded.

“You've been looking for me.”

Margot stepped forward.

“You created Project Vale.”

“Yes.”

“You experimented on children.”

“Yes.”

“You created my daughter.”

Lucian looked at her.

“No.”

Margot's heart stopped.

“What?”

“I didn't create your daughter.”

He looked at Elena.

“Your grandmother did.”

Eleanor's voice suddenly came through the speakers.

“You finally understand.”

Margot spun around.

The doors locked.

Eleanor appeared on the monitor.

Alive.

Watching.

Margot shouted:

“Why did you do this?”

Eleanor's expression was calm.

“To save the bloodline.”

“You turned my child into an experiment.”

“No.”

“You planned my pregnancy.”

“No.”

“You used Adrian's DNA.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked directly at Margot.

“Because Adrian wasn't meant to survive.”

Margot froze.

“What?”

“He was designed to be the bridge.”

“Between what?”

“Between the three bloodlines.”

Wren.

Vale.

Landry.

Eleanor continued:

“Your daughter is the first naturally born child to carry all three.”

Margot whispered:

“Why?”

“Because the original Wren trust was created to recognize her.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then what happens when she is born?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

Margot's voice sharpened.

“What happens?”

Finally, Eleanor said:

“The trust unlocks.”

“And then?”

“Every company.”

“Every account.”

“Every patent.”

“Every hidden asset.”

“Everything passes to her.”

Margot stared.

“And who controls it?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Whoever controls her.”

Margot's blood ran cold.

“That was your plan.”

“No.”

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“That was Walter's plan.”

“Then why did you help him?”

“I didn't.”

“Then why did you create the system?”

“To stop him.”

Margot shook her head.

“You're no different from him.”

Eleanor looked wounded.

Perhaps for the first time in her life.

“You're wrong.”

Margot stepped forward.

“No.”

“You taught everyone to believe children could be used for power.”

“You taught Walter how.”

“You taught Priscilla how.”

“You taught Daniel how.”

“And you taught me to fear my own family.”

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“I taught you to survive them.”

A loud crash came from the laboratory entrance.

Vance drew his weapon.

Someone had broken through the outer doors.

Lucian looked terrified.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

He looked at Margot.

“Walter.”

Margot's eyes widened.

“But he's in custody.”

Lucian shook his head.

“That isn't Walter.”

A figure entered the laboratory.

Dark coat.

Covered face.

Holding a gun.

The figure removed the mask.

Margot froze.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Priscilla had escaped custody.

She stood before them.

But she wasn't alone.

Behind her stood a young man.

Dark hair.

Pale eyes.

A silver pendant around his neck.

Margot stared.

Adrian.

Her brother.

Alive.

Priscilla smiled.

“You wanted the truth about your daughter.”

She looked at Margot.

“Now you're going to hear the truth about her father.”

Margot's eyes widened.

“Daniel is her father.”

Priscilla shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward Adrian.

“That's the lie.”

Margot couldn't breathe.

Priscilla's voice dropped.

“Your daughter was never created from Adrian's blood.”

She looked at Elena.

“She was created from his.”

Everyone turned toward the young man.

Adrian stepped forward.

Margot stared at him.

“Then…”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked at her stomach.

“I'm her biological father.”

Daniel staggered backward.

Elena covered her mouth.

Margot couldn't move.

Adrian's voice trembled.

“I was told you would never find out.”

Margot looked at Priscilla.

“Why?”

Priscilla smiled sadly.

“Because if Daniel is the father, the inheritance can be challenged.”

“But if Adrian is…”

Margot finished the sentence herself.

“The trust becomes absolute.”

Priscilla nodded.

And then Eleanor's voice came through the speakers one final time.

“No.”

Everyone looked up.

Eleanor whispered:

“That's not the truth either.”

The screen went black.

A final message appeared.

THE THIRD GENERATION HAS TWO FATHERS.

Margot stared.

Daniel's face went white.

Adrian stepped backward.

And somewhere inside the laboratory, a machine suddenly activated.

A monitor displayed one final result:

GENETIC PARENTAGE — UNRESOLVED.

Then beneath it:

THREE BIOLOGICAL SOURCES DETECTED.

Margot looked at her unborn child.

For the first time, she realized the horrifying truth.

Someone had spent years creating a child whose blood could belong to an entire empire.

And now—

every person who had betrayed her was coming for her daughter.

But Margot had finally stopped running.

She placed one hand over her stomach.

“Let them come.”

Her voice was calm.

“They're going to learn something.”

She looked at Daniel.

Then Elena.

Then Adrian.

“My daughter belongs to herself.”

Outside, sirens began to rise.

And somewhere in the darkness, Walter smiled.

Because the trial had ended.

May you like

But the war for the child—

had just begun.
