Chapter 9 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

Chapter 9 — The Betrayal Inside the Family
Priscilla stood beside Walter as if she had been waiting for this moment all her life.
The empty infant carrier hung from her hand.
Margot stared at it.
Then at Walter.
Then at Priscilla.
“You brought that here?”
Priscilla smiled.
“I came prepared.”
Vance raised his weapon.
“Put the carrier down.”
Priscilla laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
Walter lifted one hand.
“Lower your weapon, Detective.”
“No.”
“You have no idea who is standing behind you.”
Margot glanced toward the darkness.
Nothing.
Then a man's voice came from behind her.
“Actually, he does.”
Daniel.
Margot turned.
He stood in the doorway.
Pale.
Weak.
Still wearing the hospital gown beneath his coat.
Blood stained the bandage beneath his shirt.
Margot stared at him.
“How did you get here?”
“I walked.”
“You were supposed to be in surgery.”
“I left.”
Daniel looked at Walter.
“I knew you'd come.”
Walter's expression changed.
“You should be dead.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You've tried that before.”
Priscilla looked furious.
“Daniel.”
He ignored her.
His eyes remained on his father.
“You've been lying to everyone.”
Walter said nothing.
“You told me Margot was the danger.”
Still nothing.
“You told me her mother was unstable.”
Nothing.
“You told me the Wren inheritance belonged to us.”
Walter finally smiled.
“It does.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“It never did.”
Margot watched him.
For the first time, Daniel didn't look like the frightened son who had spent his life obeying Walter.
He looked free.
Terrified.
But free.
Walter studied him.
“You think one night of courage changes what you are?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“It changes what I choose to become.”
Priscilla stepped forward.
“You're making a mistake.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You shot me.”
Priscilla's face remained cold.
“I didn't.”
“You told Walter to remove me.”
“I told him you were becoming dangerous.”
“You knew exactly what he would do.”
Priscilla didn't answer.
Daniel nodded.
“That's what I thought.”
Vance moved toward Margot.
“Stay behind me.”
Margot nodded.
Walter looked at her stomach.
His expression changed.
“You're carrying the last Wren heir.”
Margot's hand moved protectively over her belly.
“She isn't yours.”
“She is part of my family.”
“No.”
Walter's voice hardened.
“She carries blood that belongs to me.”
Margot stared.
“You stole that blood.”
Walter smiled.
“Blood isn't stolen.”
“Names are.”
His smile disappeared.
Margot lifted the will.
“You were never a Landry.”
Walter's face became unreadable.
“You've been told a story.”
“I have proof.”
“You have a piece of paper.”
“I have DNA.”
Walter's eyes narrowed.
“And that is why you are dangerous.”
A gunshot exploded.
Vance pushed Margot down.
Glass shattered behind them.
Everyone scattered.
Daniel tackled one of Walter's men.
Priscilla screamed.
Walter disappeared through a side door.
Margot crawled toward the safe.
The original documents were still inside.
She reached for them.
Then someone grabbed her wrist.
She looked up.
Priscilla.
“Give me the will.”
“No.”
Priscilla twisted her arm.
Margot cried out.
“Give it to me!”
Vance shouted:
“Let her go!”
Priscilla pulled Margot against her.
A gun appeared in her hand.
“Come any closer and I'll shoot.”
Vance stopped.
Margot stared at Priscilla.
“You're pregnant.”
Priscilla laughed.
“No.”
Margot's eyes narrowed.
“You never were.”
“No.”
“The belly was fake.”
“Yes.”
“The entire pregnancy.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Priscilla's expression changed.
“Because everyone respects a pregnant woman.”
Margot stared.
“You used the lie to manipulate Daniel.”
“I used it to control him.”
“And Eleanor?”
“Useful.”
“And Walter?”
Priscilla smiled.
“Useful too.”
Margot's eyes narrowed.
“You're not his follower.”
“No.”
Priscilla whispered:
“He is mine.”
Daniel heard her.
He froze.
“Mother?”
Priscilla looked at him.
“You finally understand.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
She lowered the gun slightly.
“Your father thinks he built this family.”
She laughed.
“He didn't.”
Walter's voice came from the doorway.
“Priscilla.”
She turned.
For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.
Walter stepped into the room.
“You were supposed to wait.”
“I got tired of waiting.”
“You've ruined the plan.”
“No.”
Priscilla smiled.
“I improved it.”
Walter stared at her.
“You're forgetting who controls you.”
Priscilla laughed.
“You still believe that?”
She raised the gun toward him.
“I've been waiting twenty years to hear you say that.”
Walter went still.
Margot watched them.
Something was terribly wrong.
The two most powerful people in the room weren't allies.
They were enemies.
And the family had been built around their war.
Priscilla spoke first.
“You took my father's company.”
Walter said nothing.
“You took his name.”
Nothing.
“You promised me half.”
“I changed my mind.”
“You always do.”
Priscilla's voice shook with anger.
“So I built my own plan.”
Daniel stared.
“What plan?”
Priscilla looked at him.
“Yours.”
“What?”
“I married into the Landry family.”
She smiled.
“I raised you.”
“I controlled your marriage.”
“I manufactured the pregnancy.”
“I manipulated the board.”
“I made your father believe I needed him.”
Daniel looked horrified.
“All this time…”
“Yes.”
Priscilla's eyes hardened.
“I was the one moving the pieces.”
Margot looked at Evelyn.
Her mother was standing against the wall.
Silent.
Watching Priscilla.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“She was the second mother.”
Margot turned.
“What?”
Evelyn's face was filled with old pain.
“Priscilla wasn't just your mother-in-law.”
“She was involved the night I was born.”
Priscilla smiled.
“Finally.”
Margot stared.
“What did you do?”
Priscilla looked at her.
“I saved you.”
Margot's expression hardened.
“You're lying.”
“I carried you out of that hospital.”
“No.”
“You were supposed to die.”
Margot's blood ran cold.
Priscilla continued.
“Your biological mother was unconscious.”
“Your grandmother wanted the child destroyed.”
“Walter wanted the child hidden.”
“And Evelyn wanted to take you away.”
“So I did what none of them could.”
Margot whispered:
“You stole me.”
Priscilla nodded.
“I changed your records.”
“You erased my identity.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Priscilla looked toward Walter.
“Because I knew the child would one day be worth more than the empire.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew about the inheritance.”
“Of course.”
“You knew Margot was the heir.”
“Yes.”
“You knew her child would control it.”
“Yes.”
“And you still married me?”
Priscilla laughed.
“I didn't marry you.”
She looked at him coldly.
“I married the inheritance.”
Daniel's face collapsed.
Margot felt sick.
Every relationship she had trusted seemed to have been built on deception.
Her mother had hidden the truth.
Daniel had hidden the records.
Priscilla had engineered her marriage.
Walter had stolen the family name.
And somewhere beneath it all was a secret no one wanted exposed.
Margot looked at Priscilla.
“What happened to Clara?”
Priscilla's expression changed.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“No.”
“You knew where she was.”
Priscilla remained silent.
Margot stepped forward.
“You watched her.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened her.”
“Yes.”
“You told her I was dead.”
Priscilla's jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Margot's voice became cold.
“Why?”
Priscilla looked directly at her.
“Because Clara was going to tell you who your real father was.”
Margot froze.
“I already know.”
“No.”
Priscilla shook her head.
“You don't.”
Vance looked toward Evelyn.
“Mrs. Wren?”
Evelyn couldn't meet his eyes.
Margot turned.
“Mom.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Clara was right.”
Margot waited.
“About what?”
“You were never supposed to know your father's identity.”
“Who was he?”
Evelyn began to cry.
“Adrian Wren.”
Margot stared.
Priscilla laughed.
“That is only half the truth.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Stop.”
Priscilla's eyes sharpened.
“Tell her.”
“No.”
“Tell her who Adrian really was.”
Margot looked between them.
“Mom?”
Evelyn finally whispered:
“Adrian was Walter's older brother.”
Silence.
Walter closed his eyes.
Daniel looked at him.
“You killed your own brother.”
Walter opened his eyes.
“He betrayed me.”
“You stole his identity.”
“He was weak.”
“You stole his inheritance.”
“He lost it.”
“You murdered him.”
Walter's expression hardened.
“I did what was necessary.”
Margot felt a wave of nausea.
“You killed my father.”
Walter looked at her.
“Yes.”
The word seemed to freeze the room.
Margot's eyes filled with tears.
“You killed him.”
“He would have destroyed everything.”
“He was my father.”
“He was a threat.”
“You murdered him.”
Walter didn't deny it.
Margot looked at Evelyn.
“And you knew.”
“I found out later.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe he was dead without knowing why.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Margot shook her head.
“You all say that.”
She looked around the room.
“Every betrayal is called protection.”
No one answered.
Then Daniel stepped beside her.
“I believe you.”
Margot looked at him.
He continued.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.”
“You shouldn't.”
“I know.”
“But I won't let them take you.”
Walter laughed.
“You can't stop me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Maybe not.”
He reached into his coat.
“But she can.”
He handed Vance a small drive.
Vance looked at it.
“What is this?”
“Everything.”
Walter's face changed.
Daniel continued.
“Bank accounts.”
“Shell companies.”
“Recordings.”
“DNA files.”
“Video footage.”
“Instructions.”
“Everything my father ever hid.”
Walter stared at his son.
“You stole from me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I took back what you stole from everyone else.”
Vance inserted the drive into a laptop.
Files appeared.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
He opened one.
A recorded conversation.
Walter's voice.
“If Adrian refuses, remove him.”
Another.
“Evelyn must never reach the child.”
Another.
“The heir must remain under Landry control.”
Another.
Priscilla's voice.
“I can make Daniel marry her.”
Margot closed her eyes.
It was all there.
Every lie.
Every manipulation.
Every betrayal.
Recorded.
Preserved.
Impossible to erase.
Priscilla stared at the screen.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
She stepped backward.
“You betrayed me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You betrayed everyone first.”
Suddenly, alarms began sounding outside.
Vance looked toward the entrance.
Police vehicles surrounded the hospital.
But there was something else.
News vans.
Reporters.
Live cameras.
Margot frowned.
“How did they know?”
Daniel looked at his phone.
“I sent the files.”
“To the police?”
“To everyone.”
Walter's expression finally cracked.
“You wouldn't.”
“I did.”
“You've destroyed the family.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
He turned toward Margot.
“You did that.”
Priscilla suddenly lunged.
She grabbed Margot.
The gun pressed against Margot's side.
“Everyone stays back!”
Vance raised his weapon.
Daniel froze.
“Mother.”
“Don't come closer.”
Margot remained calm.
“Priscilla.”
“What?”
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You thought I was still afraid of you.”
Priscilla's eyes narrowed.
Margot reached into her pocket.
She pulled out her phone.
The recording light was on.
Priscilla stared.
“You've been recording.”
Margot smiled.
“Yes.”
She turned the screen toward her.
The entire confession was still being transmitted.
Live.
Priscilla's face collapsed.
“No.”
Margot whispered:
“Everyone just heard you.”
Outside, reporters began shouting.
Police officers moved toward the door.
Priscilla looked at Walter.
Walter looked at her.
And for the first time—
neither had control.
Priscilla lowered the gun.
Vance moved instantly.
He disarmed her and forced her to the floor.
Walter tried to escape.
Daniel blocked the door.
“You're not leaving.”
Walter stared at his son.
“You think this ends with my arrest?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He stepped aside.
Behind him stood Evelyn.
Clara.
And Charles Wren.
Alive.
Walter's expression changed.
Charles smiled.
“You should have checked the body.”
Walter whispered:
“Impossible.”
Charles answered:
“That's what everyone kept telling us.”
Margot stared at her grandfather.
“You're alive.”
Charles nodded.
“Barely.”
“Where were you?”
“In the room beneath the mansion.”
Margot remembered the bloodstained pendant.
“You staged your death.”
“Yes.”
“To trap Walter.”
“Yes.”
“But the blood?”
“Mine.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed Walter to believe I was dead.”
Margot looked at him.
“You knew everything.”
“Not everything.”
“What didn't you know?”
Charles looked toward Evelyn.
“That she had survived.”
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“And I didn't know you had.”
Charles looked at her.
“Perhaps we've both been better at hiding than we thought.”
Walter was handcuffed.
Priscilla was taken away.
The room slowly emptied.
But Margot remained still.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at her mother.
Then at Clara.
Three women.
Three generations of secrets.
She placed one hand over her stomach.
“My daughter is safe.”
Clara nodded.
“For tonight.”
Margot looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Clara's face changed.
“There is still one person we haven't found.”
“Who?”
Clara looked toward Walter.
Walter smiled.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
Margot frowned.
“What question should I ask?”
Walter leaned closer as the officers pulled him away.
“Ask yourself why your grandmother wanted your daughter to inherit everything.”
Margot stared.
Walter continued:
“Because the inheritance was never meant to save the Wren family.”
He smiled.
“It was meant to expose it.”
The doors closed behind him.
Margot looked at Evelyn.
“What does he mean?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
Charles did.
“He means your grandmother left one final condition.”
Margot's stomach tightened.
“What condition?”
Charles looked at the will.
“If the truth about the Wren bloodline becomes public…”
He paused.
“…the entire inheritance transfers to the child immediately.”
Margot stared.
“And if that happens?”
Charles's expression became grim.
“The Landry empire disappears.”
Daniel looked at her.
“All of it.”
Margot breathed slowly.
For the first time, she understood the true scale of what they had been fighting over.
Not a house.
Not a company.
Not even a fortune.
An entire empire.
And her unborn daughter was the person standing between that empire and its destruction.
Then Margot's phone vibrated.
One new message.
No number.
No name.
Only four words:
THE REAL BETRAYAL BEGINS.
Margot stared at the screen.
Behind her, the hospital lights flickered.
May you like
And somewhere in the city—
someone who had remained silent for thirty years had just decided to speak.
