Chapter 11 — The Dead Man's Return

Chapter 11 — The Dead Man's Return
The message remained on Ethan's phone.
BRING YOUR REAL FATHER.
He read it three times.
Then he looked at Daniel.
His father.
The man who had raised him.
The man who had protected him.
The man who had lied to him.
Daniel stood completely still.
Ethan's voice was quiet.
“Who is my real father?”
Daniel didn't answer.
“Dad.”
Nothing.
“Look at me.”
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
“I don't know.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“You know.”
“I know who your biological father is.”
“Then say his name.”
Daniel looked toward Richard.
Richard shook his head.
“Not here.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“I've spent seven years believing my wife was dead.”
He pointed toward the hospital corridor.
“I've spent one night discovering my daughter may have a twin.”
He looked at Richard.
“I've learned that my family has been lying to me since before I was born.”
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“I deserve one truth.”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father's name is Gabriel Vale.”
Ethan froze.
Richard closed his eyes.
“And he's alive.”
The words seemed to change the temperature of the room.
Ethan stared at Daniel.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“You told me he died.”
“I told you what I was ordered to tell you.”
“By Arthur?”
Daniel nodded.
“Why?”
“Because Gabriel was dangerous.”
“To whom?”
“To Arthur.”
Ethan frowned.
“What did he do?”
Daniel looked toward the old hospital corridor.
“He tried to destroy the Blackwood empire.”
Ethan's voice became cold.
“And Arthur stopped him?”
“No.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Arthur thought he did.”
Richard walked toward the wall.
He pressed his palm against an old metal panel.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Richard removed one.
He handed it to Ethan.
A photograph fell from the folder.
A young man stood beside a woman.
The man had Ethan's eyes.
The same dark hair.
The same sharp jaw.
The same small scar beneath his left eyebrow.
Ethan stared.
“That's him.”
Richard nodded.
“Gabriel.”
Ethan turned the photograph over.
A handwritten message appeared.
If Ethan ever learns the truth, tell him I never abandoned him.
Ethan's hands shook.
“When was this written?”
“Twenty-seven years ago.”
“Before I was born.”
“Yes.”
“Where was he?”
Richard hesitated.
“Prison.”
Ethan stared.
“For what?”
“Murder.”
Silence.
“Whose murder?”
Richard looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Arthur's.”
Ethan looked up.
“What?”
“Gabriel was accused of killing Arthur.”
“But Arthur was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then who died?”
Daniel whispered:
“A man who looked exactly like him.”
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“This family is insane.”
Richard almost smiled.
“No argument.”
“Then tell me everything.”
Richard nodded.
“Twenty-seven years ago, Gabriel discovered the Blackwood Archive.”
“What was inside?”
“Evidence that Arthur had been eliminating members of his own family.”
“Why?”
“To control the inheritance.”
“And Gabriel tried to expose him.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Arthur disappeared.”
“And Gabriel?”
“He was arrested for Arthur's murder.”
“But Arthur survived.”
“Yes.”
“Then who was the body?”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“Arthur's twin brother.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“He had a twin?”
“Yes.”
“Another hidden heir.”
“Yes.”
Ethan shook his head.
“How many heirs are there?”
Richard answered:
“More than the Blackwoods admit.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
Security raised their weapons.
A man walked slowly into the red emergency light.
Tall.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
A long scar ran from his left cheek to his jaw.
Ethan's breath caught.
The man stopped.
His eyes met Ethan's.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then the stranger said:
“You look exactly like your mother.”
Ethan couldn't move.
Daniel whispered:
“Gabriel.”
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, son.”
Ethan's entire body went rigid.
Gabriel looked at Daniel.
“You kept him alive.”
Daniel nodded.
“I tried.”
Gabriel looked at Richard.
“And you?”
Richard lowered his weapon.
“I failed.”
Gabriel looked at Ethan again.
“You've grown.”
Ethan's voice came out broken.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You've been alive all these years.”
“Yes.”
“Where were you?”
“Underground.”
“Why?”
“Because Arthur wanted me dead.”
“You let me believe I had no father.”
“I had no choice.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You always had a choice.”
Gabriel accepted the accusation.
“Yes.”
Ethan's voice rose.
“You could have found me.”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Every year.”
Ethan stopped.
“What?”
Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.
“I watched you from a distance.”
“Why didn't you come to me?”
“Because every person who came close to you disappeared.”
Ethan remembered.
The teachers who suddenly left.
The family doctor who vanished.
The childhood friend whose parents moved away.
The security officer who died in an unexplained accident.
He had always thought those events were random.
They weren't.
Gabriel continued.
“Arthur wasn't protecting the family.”
“He was hunting it.”
A gunshot exploded.
The bullet struck the wall beside Gabriel.
Security reacted instantly.
“Down!”
Everyone dropped.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Richard looked toward the corridor.
“Sniper.”
Gabriel pulled Ethan behind a concrete pillar.
“Stay down.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You know where they are?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because I trained them.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Arthur didn't build the Blackwood security network.”
“I did.”
The sniper disappeared before security could reach the roof.
Gabriel stood.
“Arthur knows I'm here.”
Ethan asked:
“How?”
Gabriel looked toward Richard.
“Because he wanted me here.”
Richard's face tightened.
“Why?”
Gabriel smiled bitterly.
“Because the Archive has opened.”
Ethan looked at the black key in his hand.
“This?”
“Yes.”
“What does it unlock?”
“The vault.”
“What's inside?”
“The truth.”
Ethan stared.
“You keep saying that.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Because you're not ready for it.”
“I've been ready since the day I found my daughter's hospital bracelet.”
Gabriel looked toward Lily.
“She isn't your only daughter.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Gabriel's expression changed.
“You don't.”
Ethan's phone vibrated again.
A video appeared.
The kidnapped girl was sitting beside Arthur.
But this time, Arthur wasn't alone.
A second man stood behind him.
Ethan recognized him.
Victor.
But Victor was supposed to be in custody.
Arthur spoke.
“Gabriel.”
Gabriel stepped closer to the screen.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Arthur smiled.
“You first.”
Victor looked toward Ethan.
“Your son has become difficult.”
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
“Let them go.”
Arthur shook his head.
“Not until the Archive opens.”
Ethan stepped toward the screen.
“You want the Archive.”
“No.”
Arthur smiled.
“I want what's inside.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Arthur's eyes shifted.
“Your mother's confession.”
Gabriel went still.
Ethan turned.
“My mother?”
Arthur continued.
“She knew who your real father was.”
Ethan stared.
“She knew everything.”
Gabriel whispered:
“No.”
Arthur smiled.
“And she recorded it.”
The screen went black.
Ethan turned toward Gabriel.
“What confession?”
Gabriel said nothing.
“Dad?”
Gabriel looked away.
“Your mother was the first person to discover the Archive.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“She tried.”
“What happened?”
“She was killed.”
Ethan froze.
“By Arthur?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel looked at Richard.
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I don't know.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“I know.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Who?”
Gabriel whispered:
“Your mother killed herself.”
Ethan froze.
“No.”
“She didn't.”
Gabriel's face tightened.
“She was forced.”
“By whom?”
Gabriel didn't answer.
“Who forced her?”
A voice came from behind them.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
Ethan stared.
“Dad?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I was there.”
Gabriel moved toward him.
“You promised you'd never tell him.”
“I can't keep lying.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“What did you do?”
Daniel shook.
“I signed the order.”
“What order?”
“To erase your mother's identity.”
Ethan's voice became a whisper.
“Why?”
“Because Arthur threatened you.”
“So you sacrificed her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Ethan walked away.
He couldn't look at any of them.
His entire life had become a collection of carefully arranged lies.
His mother.
His father.
His childhood.
His marriage.
His daughter.
Everything.
Then Lily touched his hand.
“Daddy.”
He looked down.
She was crying.
“Am I still your daughter?”
Ethan knelt.
“Yes.”
“Even if I'm not the real Lily?”
“You're real.”
“Even if I have a sister?”
“You have a sister.”
“Will you find her?”
Ethan held her tightly.
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Gabriel watched them.
For the first time, his expression softened.
Then he noticed something around Lily's neck.
The silver locket.
His face changed.
“Where did she get that?”
Ethan looked down.
“The hospital.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Open it.”
Ethan did.
Inside was a photograph.
Amelia.
Lily.
And another woman.
Gabriel stared.
“That isn't Amelia.”
Ethan frowned.
“Who is she?”
Gabriel whispered:
“Your mother.”
Ethan's heart stopped.
“But my mother died.”
“She did.”
“Then why is she in this photograph?”
Gabriel turned the picture over.
There was a date.
Twenty-seven years ago.
And a handwritten sentence:
I TRUSTED THE WRONG MAN.
Gabriel's face went white.
“Who?”
Ethan asked.
“Who did she trust?”
Gabriel stared at Daniel.
Daniel began shaking.
Then Gabriel said:
“Your father.”
Ethan looked confused.
“You're my father.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
Silence.
“I was your biological father.”
“But your mother married another man.”
“Who?”
Gabriel looked toward the darkness.
“Arthur's brother.”
Ethan's mind reeled.
“You're saying I was born from an affair?”
“No.”
Gabriel's voice broke.
“You were born from a lie.”
The doors of the hospital suddenly locked.
A computerized voice announced:
ARCHIVE ACCESS INITIATED.
Everyone froze.
Richard looked at the black key.
“It has begun.”
Ethan looked toward the floor.
A section of the wall opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Gabriel stared.
“We have to go.”
“Where?”
“The Archive.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“She's coming.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
“She is my daughter.”
“She is the Second Heir.”
“And?”
Gabriel's expression became grim.
“If she enters the Archive…”
He paused.
“…the system will recognize her.”
“What happens then?”
Gabriel looked toward Richard.
Richard whispered:
“It will reveal which bloodline she belongs to.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why does that matter?”
Gabriel's face became pale.
“Because if the Archive recognizes her as a Vale…”
He looked at Ethan.
“…Arthur will lose control of the Blackwood empire.”
“And if it recognizes her as a Blackwood?”
Gabriel hesitated.
“Then every person who has tried to kill her will come after her.”
Ethan tightened his grip around Lily's hand.
“Then we protect her.”
Gabriel nodded.
“That's what I've been trying to do for twenty-seven years.”
They descended the stairs.
One step.
Then another.
The darkness grew thicker.
At the bottom stood a massive steel door.
No lock.
No keypad.
Only a handprint scanner.
Richard looked at Ethan.
“Blood.”
Ethan placed his palm against the scanner.
Nothing happened.
Then Lily stepped forward.
She placed her hand beside his.
The machine activated.
A deep mechanical voice filled the corridor.
TWO HEIRS DETECTED.
Ethan froze.
The doors opened.
Inside was a vast circular chamber.
Thousands of files lined the walls.
Photographs.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
Bank records.
Marriage documents.
Death certificates.
Every secret the Blackwood family had ever buried.
At the center stood a glass case.
Inside was a single envelope.
Ethan approached.
The name on it was handwritten.
ETHAN.
He opened it.
A recording device lay inside.
He pressed the button.
A woman's voice filled the room.
His mother's voice.
“Ethan, if you're hearing this, then I'm already dead.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
“I need you to understand something.”
The recording continued.
“Your father is not the man you think he is.”
Ethan looked at Gabriel.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“And the man who raised you is not the man who saved you.”
Daniel began crying.
The recording continued.
“Your greatest enemy is not Arthur.”
A pause.
“He is the man standing beside you.”
Everyone turned.
Gabriel.
Richard.
Daniel.
Amelia.
Ethan stared at each of them.
Then the woman's voice whispered:
“Trust no one.”
The recording ended.
A red light appeared above the Archive entrance.
Then a second message appeared on the wall.
DNA VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Lily stepped forward.
The machine scanned her.
A result appeared.
SECOND HEIR CONFIRMED.
Then another line appeared.
Ethan stared at it.
His heart stopped.
PARENTAGE: UNKNOWN.
Richard stepped backward.
Gabriel's face went white.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“She isn't yours.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Then whose daughter is she?”
The Archive displayed one final name.
FATHER: ARTHUR BLACKWOOD.
Silence.
No one moved.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then at Lily.
Then at the door behind them.
A slow smile appeared on Arthur's face from the security monitor.
His voice echoed through the chamber.
“Now you finally understand.”
Ethan's blood turned cold.
“The Second Heir was never meant to inherit my empire.”
Arthur smiled.
May you like
“She was born to inherit mine.”
