Chapter 13 — The Empire Burns

Chapter 13 — The Empire Burns
By six in the morning, the Cole Corporation was no longer a company.
It was a crime scene.
Federal vehicles lined the street outside headquarters.
Reporters stood behind barricades.
Employees gathered in frightened groups, staring at the glass tower where they had worked for years.
Nathan watched the chaos from the window of his temporary office.
Grace stood behind him.
Lily was asleep in the next room.
“They came fast,” Grace whispered.
Nathan nodded.
“They were waiting.”
“For what?”
“For someone to finally give them permission to look.”
On the desk lay the evidence.
Forged documents.
Secret transfers.
False medical records.
The family pact.
The files concerning Grace.
The records involving Lily.
And the evidence connecting Gregory Voss to the operation.
Nathan looked at them one final time.
“Today, everything burns.”
Grace touched his arm.
“Are you sure?”
Nathan turned.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
He smiled sadly.
“But I'm doing it anyway.”
At 7:02 a.m., Nathan walked into the main conference room.
Thirty-six executives were waiting.
So were attorneys.
Federal investigators.
Several members of the board.
And Victoria.
She sat alone near the back.
Her face was pale.
Nathan took his place at the front.
The chairman spoke first.
“Mr. Cole, before this meeting begins, I need to remind you that—”
Nathan raised his hand.
“No.”
The chairman stopped.
Nathan looked around the room.
“For five years, my family has controlled the truth.”
He placed a file on the table.
“Today, that ends.”
A federal investigator stepped forward.
“Proceed.”
Nathan pressed the remote.
The first document appeared.
THE COLE-HAYES SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
The room fell silent.
Nathan explained exactly how the agreement had been created.
How the marriage between him and Victoria had been negotiated as a corporate transaction.
How voting rights had been tied to their marriage.
How Lily had been classified as an undisclosed heir.
How Grace's identity had been systematically destroyed.
Then came the financial records.
Millions transferred through shell companies.
Payments to intermediaries.
Payments to officials.
Payments connected to false investigations.
Every transaction was displayed.
Every name.
Every date.
Every account.
There was nowhere left to hide.
Gregory Voss stood.
“This is fabricated.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Then explain this.”
The screen changed.
A bank transfer.
$850,000.
Recipient:
EMILY HART CONSULTING.
Gregory's face changed.
Nathan continued.
“Then another.”
$1.2 million.
Another.
$2.4 million.
Another.
$700,000.
A federal investigator leaned toward the screen.
“Those accounts were previously identified as dormant.”
Nathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
Gregory shouted:
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
Nathan looked at him.
“I know enough.”
The room went silent.
Then the recording began.
Emily's voice filled the room.
“I was hired to become someone else.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
Gregory looked furious.
Nathan let the recording continue.
Emily described the operation.
The forged documents.
The impersonation.
The manufactured criminal history.
The attempt to destroy Grace's credibility.
Then she mentioned Lily.
The room became completely silent.
“She was the reason they needed Grace gone.”
The recording ended.
Nathan looked at the board.
“This was not a family disagreement.”
He paused.
“It was an organized operation.”
The federal prosecutor stood.
“Mr. Cole, do you have evidence connecting the operation to the financial accounts?”
Nathan handed him another folder.
“Yes.”
The prosecutor opened it.
His expression changed.
“These are internal audit records.”
“Yes.”
“Who gave them to you?”
“My father.”
The room went silent.
“Robert Cole?”
Nathan nodded.
“My father kept records because he knew he was being betrayed.”
The prosecutor looked at the documents.
Then at Nathan.
“These could establish criminal intent.”
Nathan nodded.
“That was the point.”
Victoria finally stood.
“Nathan.”
He looked at her.
“I want to cooperate.”
Richard Hayes immediately turned.
“Victoria.”
She ignored him.
“I want immunity.”
The room went silent.
Nathan stared at her.
“You want immunity?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
Victoria began crying.
“For everything I know.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“You knew about Grace.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You signed the agreement.”
“Yes.”
“You helped them.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at the prosecutor.
“She can tell you everything.”
Victoria swallowed.
“But I need protection.”
The prosecutor looked at her.
“Protection from whom?”
Victoria glanced toward the windows.
Then whispered:
“Eleanor.”
Nathan froze.
The room erupted.
“What?”
“Eleanor Cole?”
“She isn't dead?”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Since when?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Since the beginning.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“And you never told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were always afraid.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You don't understand what she is capable of.”
Nathan's voice became quiet.
“I understand now.”
At 9:14 a.m., federal agents entered the Cole Corporation's headquarters.
The building was placed under investigation.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Corporate assets were secured.
Private aircraft were grounded.
Several properties were seized pending investigation.
The board members were ordered to surrender company devices.
Employees were escorted from restricted offices.
Nathan watched from the lobby.
His company was collapsing in real time.
Grace stood beside him.
“You're losing everything.”
Nathan looked at the tower.
“No.”
He took Lily's hand.
“I'm losing what they built.”
He looked at Grace.
“Not what we built.”
By noon, the stock price had collapsed.
Investors panicked.
Partners withdrew.
Banks suspended credit facilities.
International accounts were frozen.
The Hayes family issued a statement denying involvement.
It lasted eleven minutes.
Then the prosecutor released documents proving Richard Hayes had signed the original pact.
The statement disappeared.
Victoria's attorneys announced her cooperation.
Gregory Voss was named as a person of interest.
Several former executives were questioned.
The company's legal department resigned.
Then came the biggest blow.
The government announced a formal investigation into the Cole-Hayes corporate network.
Nathan watched the press conference from home.
Grace sat beside him.
Lily was coloring at the table.
“Does this mean we're poor now?” Grace asked quietly.
Nathan smiled.
“No.”
“But the company…”
“Companies can disappear.”
He looked at Lily.
“Families shouldn't.”
That afternoon, Nathan received a call.
The prosecutor.
“We found another account.”
Nathan frowned.
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
His stomach tightened.
“How much?”
“Twenty-three million.”
“Whose?”
The prosecutor paused.
“Your father's.”
Nathan sat up.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Was it part of the conspiracy?”
“We don't know.”
“What is the account labeled?”
The prosecutor hesitated.
“Lily.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
“The account is registered under Lily's name.”
Grace looked at him.
Nathan stood.
“That's impossible.”
“It was opened before Lily was born.”
Silence.
“Who opened it?”
“We're trying to determine that.”
Nathan's mind raced.
His father's secret account.
Lily's name.
Twenty-three million dollars.
Project Lilith.
The pact.
Everything seemed connected.
Then the prosecutor said:
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“The account has been receiving deposits for years.”
“From whom?”
“Unknown entities.”
Nathan's voice became cold.
“Can you trace them?”
“Yes.”
“Do it.”
“We already did.”
Nathan waited.
“They all lead back to one company.”
“What company?”
The prosecutor said:
“Cole Holdings.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
His family had been moving money through an account created in the name of a child they claimed did not exist.
That night, Victoria gave a formal statement.
She admitted knowing about Lily.
She admitted knowing Grace had been framed.
She admitted participating in the family agreement.
But she claimed she had never ordered violence.
The prosecutor believed her enough to offer cooperation.
Richard Hayes was not so fortunate.
His accounts were frozen.
His company was searched.
His private residence was raided.
Gregory Voss was arrested before midnight.
The man who had spent years controlling records and officials was led into a courthouse in handcuffs.
Reporters surrounded him.
“Did you frame Grace Bennett?”
“Did you help hide Lily?”
“Did you work with Eleanor Cole?”
Gregory stopped.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
He looked directly at one camera.
Then whispered:
“She isn't supposed to be alive.”
The footage went viral within minutes.
Nathan watched it twice.
Then called Robert.
“Find Eleanor.”
“We're trying.”
“No.”
Nathan's voice hardened.
“Stop trying.”
“What?”
“Find her before she finds Lily.”
At 2:00 a.m., Nathan woke to a noise.
A soft sound.
Like glass breaking.
He immediately got out of bed.
Grace woke.
“What happened?”
“Stay here.”
Nathan moved through the hallway.
The house was dark.
He checked Lily's room.
Empty.
His heart stopped.
“Lily?”
No answer.
Grace ran behind him.
“Where is she?”
Nathan searched the room.
The window was open.
The curtains moved in the cold air.
Then he saw something on the floor.
Lily's stuffed rabbit.
Nathan picked it up.
His hands began shaking.
“Lily!”
Grace screamed.
They searched the entire house.
Nothing.
Then Nathan noticed the security monitor.
One camera was offline.
The front gate camera.
He checked the recording.
A black vehicle.
A woman stepping out.
Silver hair.
Nathan's blood froze.
“Eleanor.”
Grace stared.
“Your mother took her?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He zoomed in.
Eleanor wasn't carrying Lily.
Someone else was.
A man.
Nathan recognized him.
Julian Mercer.
The body double.
The man who had supposedly been dead.
Nathan's face went white.
“He's alive.”
Grace whispered:
“What?”
Nathan pointed at the screen.
“The man who helped them fake my father's death.”
Then another image appeared.
A second person stood near the car.
Victoria.
Nathan froze.
“No.”
Grace looked at him.
“Victoria?”
Nathan watched the footage.
Victoria wasn't helping them.
She was standing there crying.
She appeared to be arguing with Eleanor.
Then Eleanor pushed something into her hand.
Victoria stepped back.
The screen went black.
Nathan immediately called Victoria.
She answered after one ring.
“Nathan?”
“Where is Lily?”
Victoria began crying.
“I don't know.”
“You were at my house.”
“I was trying to stop her.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“I don't know.”
“Tell me!”
“I can't!”
Nathan's voice became deadly calm.
“Victoria.”
Silence.
“Tell me where she is.”
Victoria whispered:
“Your father's old estate.”
Nathan froze.
“The country house?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where everything started.”
Nathan grabbed his coat.
Grace followed.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You're staying here.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Grace—”
“She is my daughter.”
Nathan stopped.
Grace's eyes were fierce.
“I've already lost five years.”
She stepped closer.
“I'm not losing another minute.”
Nathan nodded.
“Then we go together.”
They left the house.
Behind them, the city was burning with the fallout of the Cole empire.
Banks were freezing accounts.
Courts were issuing warrants.
Executives were being questioned.
The family legacy was collapsing.
But Nathan didn't care.
For the first time in his life, the empire meant nothing.
Only Lily mattered.
At the country estate, the front door stood open.
Nathan entered first.
The house was dark.
Too quiet.
“Lily?”
No answer.
Grace followed.
Then a small voice came from upstairs.
“Daddy?”
Nathan ran.
He found Lily sitting on the floor.
She wasn't alone.
An older man sat beside her.
Thin.
Pale.
Older than Nathan remembered.
But unmistakable.
Nathan stopped breathing.
“Dad?”
The man looked at him.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Nathan.”
Nathan couldn't move.
Robert Cole was alive.
His father.
The man they had buried.
The man whose death had started the entire conspiracy.
Grace covered her mouth.
Lily ran toward Nathan.
He picked her up.
“Daddy!”
Nathan held her tightly.
Then looked at the man sitting against the wall.
His father slowly stood.
“I wanted to come back.”
Nathan stared at him.
“Why didn't you?”
Robert looked toward the doorway.
“Because your mother would have killed you.”
Nathan's blood went cold.
“My mother?”
Robert nodded.
“She didn't just steal your inheritance.”
He took a breath.
“She stole your entire life.”
Outside, sirens began approaching.
Nathan looked at Lily.
Then at Grace.
Then at his father.
The empire had burned.
But the fire had exposed something much larger beneath it.
And now Nathan finally understood.
The war had never been about the company.
May you like
It had always been about one family trying to control another.
And the final battle was still waiting.
