Chapter 11 — The Truth About Ethan's Mother

Chapter 11 — The Truth About Ethan's Mother
Victor drove until the city disappeared behind them.
No streetlights.
No buildings.
No familiar roads.
Only darkness.
Ethan slept in Lily's arms in the back seat.
Victor hadn't spoken for twenty minutes.
Neither had Lily.
The revelation about his grandfather had changed everything.
But one question kept returning.
Why had Serena wanted Ethan?
Not merely his inheritance.
Not merely the trust.
Something deeper.
Something personal.
Victor finally broke the silence.
“Lily.”
“Yes?”
“What did Serena say about Ethan's mother?”
Lily looked down at the sleeping child.
“Almost nothing.”
“Almost?”
“She mentioned her once.”
Victor's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“What did she say?”
“That she was dead.”
Victor frowned.
“She is.”
“I know.”
Lily hesitated.
“But Serena didn't sound sad.”
“What did she sound like?”
“Afraid.”
Victor looked at her through the mirror.
“Afraid of what?”
Lily whispered:
“Her.”
They stopped at an abandoned farmhouse outside the city.
It belonged to an old Blackwood associate who owed Victor a favor.
There were no cameras.
No internet.
No nearby neighbors.
For the first time in hours, Victor felt he could breathe.
Lily placed Ethan on a mattress in the upstairs bedroom.
He slept peacefully.
Victor stood at the window.
Lily came beside him.
“You're thinking about her.”
“My sister.”
“Anna.”
Victor nodded.
“She was supposed to be Ethan's mother.”
“She is.”
Victor looked at her.
“How can that be?”
Lily froze.
“What?”
“Ethan's birth certificate.”
Victor pulled out his phone.
He opened the copy Daniel had once given him.
Mother:
Emily Blackwood.
Lily stared.
“That's not Anna.”
“No.”
“Then who is Emily?”
Victor shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Lily's eyes widened.
“Maybe that's the secret.”
Victor looked toward Ethan.
“If Anna is his biological mother…”
“Then someone changed his identity.”
Victor nodded.
“And Serena knew.”
At dawn, Victor called Margaret Hale.
The trust attorney answered from a secure line.
“Victor?”
“I need Ethan's original birth records.”
There was silence.
“Why?”
“Because I think they're false.”
Margaret took a breath.
“I was afraid you'd discover this.”
Victor's expression changed.
“What?”
“The records were altered.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Victor closed his eyes.
“How long have you known?”
“Six years.”
“You knew?”
“I was under orders.”
“From Alexander?”
“Yes.”
Victor's voice became cold.
“What is Ethan's real name?”
Margaret hesitated.
Then:
“Ethan Alexander Blackwood.”
Victor frowned.
“That is his name.”
“Not his mother's.”
Victor went silent.
Margaret continued.
“His mother was registered under another identity.”
“Which was?”
“Emily Carter.”
Lily's face went pale.
“That was my surname.”
Victor looked at her.
Margaret continued:
“Emily Carter was an alias.”
Victor whispered:
“Anna.”
“Yes.”
Lily stared.
“Why would she use an alias?”
“Because she was hiding from the Blackwood family.”
“From Victor's father?”
“From everyone.”
Victor couldn't understand.
His sister had been alive.
She had married secretly.
She had given birth.
She had hidden her child.
And somehow Serena had found her.
“Where is Anna now?”
Margaret was silent.
Victor's heart began pounding.
“Margaret.”
“I don't know.”
“Don't lie.”
“I swear.”
“Then who knows?”
Another pause.
“Serena.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“She knows where Anna is.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Serena was connected to her.”
“How?”
Margaret whispered:
“Serena wasn't recruited by your father.”
Victor froze.
“She was recruited by Anna.”
Victor ended the call.
Lily stared at him.
“What did she say?”
Victor didn't answer.
He walked to the table.
Opened the trust.
Read it again.
Then he found a clause he had never noticed.
A handwritten note had been added beneath the beneficiary section.
If Anna is alive, the trustee must protect her identity until Ethan reaches adulthood.
Victor stared.
Lily stepped closer.
“Your father wrote that?”
Victor nodded.
“Then he wasn't trying to destroy Anna.”
“Maybe he was protecting her.”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because he also created the clause allowing Serena to become trustee.”
Lily looked at the document.
“Then Serena was supposed to protect Anna.”
Victor's face hardened.
“But she betrayed her.”
The farmhouse door opened.
A woman stood outside.
Victor reached for his weapon.
The woman raised both hands.
“Don't shoot.”
Victor stared.
She removed her hood.
Serena.
Lily gasped.
Victor aimed directly at her.
“Where is my sister?”
Serena looked at him.
“You still don't understand.”
“You kidnapped my son.”
“I protected him.”
“You broke his arm.”
Serena's face changed.
“I didn't.”
Lily stepped forward.
“You watched.”
“Yes.”
“But you allowed it.”
Serena looked at her.
“I had no choice.”
Victor's gun remained steady.
“Everyone says that.”
“I know.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I know where Anna is.”
Victor lowered the gun slightly.
“Tell me.”
Serena shook her head.
“Not until you hear everything.”
They sat around the farmhouse table.
Serena looked exhausted.
For the first time, she didn't look like the elegant woman from the charity galas.
She looked frightened.
Victor stared at her.
“Start.”
Serena took a breath.
“Anna and I met seven years ago.”
Victor frowned.
“Where?”
“Europe.”
“What was she doing there?”
“Running.”
“From your father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Serena looked at Lily.
“Because she knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That Alexander didn't fake his death.”
Victor stared.
“He was trying to escape.”
“From whom?”
Serena swallowed.
“Your grandfather.”
Victor froze.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“He's alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Then what does he want?”
Serena's voice dropped.
“The Blackwood empire.”
Victor stared.
“That doesn't explain Ethan.”
Serena shook her head.
“It does.”
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a photograph.
Placed it on the table.
Victor picked it up.
A young woman stood beside a baby.
Anna.
Victor's sister.
And Ethan.
But there was another person in the photograph.
A man.
Victor's eyes widened.
“Who is that?”
Serena whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Victor stared at the image.
The old man was standing behind Anna.
One hand rested on Ethan's shoulder.
Victor's blood ran cold.
“When was this taken?”
“Fourteen months ago.”
“That's impossible.”
“It was taken three days after Ethan was born.”
Victor looked at Serena.
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Where?”
“Geneva.”
Victor stared at the photograph.
“Why was he with her?”
Serena answered:
“Because Anna wasn't hiding from him.”
Victor's expression changed.
“She was working for him.”
Serena nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily felt a chill.
“Why?”
Serena looked at her.
“Because Anna believed the Blackwood empire needed to be destroyed.”
Victor shook his head.
“My sister hated the family?”
“She hated what it had become.”
“And Ethan?”
Serena looked toward the stairs.
“He was supposed to be the weapon.”
Victor's face hardened.
“What?”
“Your grandfather wanted Ethan to inherit the entire empire.”
“That was always the plan.”
“No.”
Serena shook her head.
“He didn't want Ethan to own it.”
Victor stared.
“He wanted Ethan to dissolve it.”
Silence.
Serena continued.
“The trust contains a hidden provision.”
Victor's eyes narrowed.
“Which is?”
“When Ethan reaches eighteen, he can choose to dissolve the Blackwood holding structure.”
Victor froze.
Lily whispered:
“Then everything ends.”
“Yes.”
“The companies?”
“Sold.”
“The family?”
“Broken apart.”
“The empire?”
“Gone.”
Victor looked at the trust.
Suddenly everything made sense.
His grandfather hadn't created the trust to preserve the empire.
He had created it to destroy it.
And Ethan was the key.
Victor looked at Serena.
“Then why marry me?”
She looked down.
“Because I needed access to the trust.”
“You could have taken it without marriage.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because only your spouse can activate the emergency succession clause.”
Victor stared.
“What clause?”
Serena pointed to the document.
“If Victor marries the designated trustee, the trustee gains immediate authority over Ethan's inheritance.”
Victor's expression darkened.
“You.”
“Yes.”
“So the marriage wasn't about money.”
“No.”
“It was about Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted to control his inheritance.”
Serena's eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to stop your grandfather.”
Victor stared.
“You expected me to believe that?”
“I don't care what you believe.”
She looked at him.
“I failed.”
Lily asked:
“Then why hurt Ethan?”
Serena's face collapsed.
“I never told anyone to break his arm.”
“But you knew it was happening.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop it?”
Serena looked away.
“Because I thought if Ethan looked weak enough, they would stop fighting over him.”
Lily stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if you understand my situation.”
Serena's voice broke.
“I was being watched.”
“By whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Victor looked at her.
“He threatened you?”
“Yes.”
“With what?”
“Anna.”
Victor froze.
“What about her?”
Serena whispered:
“He has her.”
Silence.
Victor stood.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did you say you knew where she was?”
“I know where she was.”
Serena looked at Ethan's room.
“But she's gone.”
Victor stared.
“Gone where?”
Serena shook her head.
“She escaped.”
Then Lily remembered the woman in the photograph.
Anna had been holding Ethan.
But there was something else.
A small pendant around Anna's neck.
Lily recognized it.
She had seen the same symbol in Serena's room.
A black crown.
“Victor.”
He turned.
“The necklace.”
“What?”
“Anna was wearing the Black Crown.”
Serena's face changed.
“You saw it?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“In your room.”
Serena stared.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“That symbol isn't the Blackwood family symbol.”
Victor frowned.
“Then what is it?”
Serena whispered:
“It belongs to the organization controlling the trust.”
Victor's face went cold.
“What organization?”
Serena looked toward the window.
“The Black Crown.”
Silence.
Victor finally understood the name he had seen in the documents.
Project Black Crown.
It wasn't a project.
It was an organization.
An organization older than the Blackwood empire.
An organization his grandfather had controlled.
And Anna had once been part of it.
Victor stepped closer.
“How deep does this go?”
Serena shook her head.
“Deeper than you think.”
“Who is the leader?”
“I never saw him.”
“Who gives the orders?”
“Your grandfather.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“And Anna?”
“She was supposed to become his successor.”
Lily gasped.
“Then Ethan…”
Serena nodded.
“Ethan is the heir.”
Victor stared at his son.
Not the heir to money.
Not merely the heir to the Blackwood empire.
The heir to something much older.
Something hidden.
Something powerful enough to make people kill for control.
Victor looked at Serena.
“You wanted to marry me because it would give you control over Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“And my grandfather wanted Ethan because he wants the Black Crown.”
“Yes.”
“And Anna?”
Serena's eyes filled with tears.
“She wanted Ethan to be free.”
Victor went silent.
For the first time, he understood why his sister had disappeared.
Why she had hidden her identity.
Why she had allowed the world to believe she was dead.
She wasn't running from the family.
She was running from the people who wanted to turn her son into their heir.
Suddenly, headlights appeared outside.
Several vehicles.
Victor stood.
“Who's that?”
Serena looked through the window.
Her face went white.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Black Crown.”
Victor reached for his weapon.
Lily grabbed Ethan.
The farmhouse lights went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
“Victor Blackwood.”
Victor froze.
The voice was old.
Calm.
Powerful.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
Victor looked toward the window.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Your grandfather.”
Lily's heart pounded.
The voice continued.
“Bring me Ethan.”
Victor stepped forward.
“You'll never have him.”
The man laughed softly.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“Ethan doesn't belong to you.”
Victor's eyes hardened.
“He is my son.”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“He is the heir.”
Then gunfire erupted outside.
Victor pulled Lily behind him.
Serena dropped to the floor.
And somewhere in the darkness, another vehicle accelerated away.
Inside it was a woman.
Anna.
She held a phone to her ear.
Her voice trembled.
“Victor knows.”
A man's voice answered.
“Then it's time.”
Anna looked at the sleeping child beside her.
“What do you want me to do?”
The voice replied:
“Bring Ethan to me.”
Anna closed her eyes.
Tears rolled down her face.
Then she whispered:
“I can't.”
The voice became cold.
“You will.”
Anna looked at Ethan.
For the first time, the truth became clear.
She had spent years running from the Black Crown.
May you like
But now they had found her.
And they would use her own son to force her back.
