CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE THREE YEARS

CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE THREE YEARS
The Villaseñor mansion had always been a place where silence carried more power than words.
Servants knew when to disappear.
Employees knew when to lower their voices.
Guests knew when not to ask questions.
For years, Diego Villaseñor had believed that silence was a sign of control.
A billionaire did not survive by showing uncertainty.
A businessman did not build an empire by allowing emotions to guide his decisions.
But that morning, standing alone inside his private office, Diego discovered something painful.
Silence was not always strength.
Sometimes…
Silence was a weapon.
And someone had used it against him.
The old photographs were spread across his desk.
Documents.
Emails.
Phone records.
Everything his security team had gathered overnight.
Everything that proved the last three years of his life were built on a lie.
Diego stared at one particular document.
A hospital record.
The birth certificate of Valentina Marisol.
His daughter.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Three years.
Three years of birthdays he missed.
Three years of first words.
Three years of first steps.
Three years when his daughter learned to laugh, to speak, to sleep, to dream…
And he had not been there.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
His personal investigator, Tomas Herrera, entered carrying another folder.
Tomas had worked for the Villaseñor family for almost fifteen years.
He was one of the few people Diego trusted completely.
“Mr. Villaseñor.”
Diego looked up.
“Tell me you found something.”
Tomas hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Diego stood.
“What is it?”
Tomas placed the folder on the desk.
“We traced the reason why Miss Marisol’s messages never reached you.”
Diego opened the folder.
Inside were copies of old communication records.
Messages.
Emails.
Phone calls.
All marked with the same result.
Blocked.
Deleted.
Intercepted.
His expression became colder with every page.
“Who?”
Tomas remained silent.
“Who blocked them?”
Finally, he answered.
“The orders came from inside the Villaseñor family.”
Diego’s jaw tightened.
“Who gave the order?”
Tomas looked at him.
“Your mother’s former assistant.”
The room became still.
For several seconds, Diego said nothing.
His mother.
Elena Villaseñor.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who taught him that family was everything.
The woman who always claimed she wanted the best for him.
“No.”
The word escaped quietly.
Tomas did not react.
“I checked everything twice.”
Diego picked up another document.
There was a signature.
A confirmation.
A payment record.
His mother’s assistant had received money from a private account.
An account connected to the Villaseñor family office.
But something bothered him.
Something did not make sense.
His mother would never do something like this without a reason.
At least…
That was what he wanted to believe.
“Find my mother.”
Tomas nodded.
“Immediately.”
Across the mansion, Marisol sat on the edge of her small bed.
The room beside the laundry area had never been meant for a family.
It was barely large enough for one person.
A small bed.
A wooden cabinet.
A window that looked toward the garden.
But for three years, it had been everything.
Her home.
Her sanctuary.
Her place where she protected Valentina from a world that had never been kind to them.
Valentina sat on the floor, coloring a picture.
A family.
A man.
A woman.
A little girl holding both their hands.
Marisol watched quietly.
Her heart ached.
Because she knew what the drawing meant.
For months, Valentina had been drawing the same thing.
A family she had never had.
Until yesterday.
Until Diego finally knew.
“Mama.”
Marisol looked down.
“Yes, mi amor?”
“Is Mr. Diego my papa?”
The question froze her.
Children were innocent.
They did not understand secrets.
They only understood feelings.
Marisol forced a smile.
“Yes.”
Valentina looked at the drawing.
“He is nice.”
A tear almost escaped Marisol’s eyes.
“Yes.”
“He smiles at me.”
“Yes.”
“He looks at me like you do.”
That sentence broke something inside her.
Because it was true.
Diego had always looked at Valentina differently.
Even before knowing.
Even before understanding.
Some part of him already recognized her.
A father’s heart had known what his mind did not.
“I’m sorry.”
The words came out suddenly.
Valentina looked confused.
“Why?”
Marisol pulled her daughter into her arms.
“Because you should have had him from the beginning.”
Valentina hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“But I have Mama.”
Marisol closed her eyes.
The simple answer hurt more than anything.
Because she knew love could not replace everything.
A child deserved both parents.
And Diego deserved the chance to be a father.
That afternoon, the entire mansion changed.
Servants whispered.
Employees avoided eye contact.
Everyone knew something had happened.
Everyone knew the billionaire had discovered something important.
But no one knew how dangerous the truth was.
Until Elena Villaseñor arrived.
The woman entered the mansion with the confidence of someone who had always belonged there.
Elegant.
Controlled.
Powerful.
She was in her late sixties, but her presence still dominated every room.
Diego waited for her in the library.
When she entered, she immediately noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Diego did not answer.
He placed the documents on the table.
His mother looked down.
And for the first time…
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But Diego noticed.
“You knew.”
Elena looked at him.
“Diego…”
“You knew about Marisol.”
Silence.
The same silence that had protected the family for years.
But this time, Diego refused to accept it.
“Answer me.”
His mother sighed.
“I knew she existed.”
His eyes darkened.
“You knew she was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
The admission hit harder than he expected.
“Then why?”
Elena walked toward the window.
“Because I knew what would happen.”
“What would happen?”
“You would throw away your future.”
Diego laughed bitterly.
“My future?”
He pointed toward the hallway.
“My daughter was my future.”
Elena turned.
“You were twenty-seven years old. You were reckless. You were building a company but had no understanding of responsibility.”
“So you decided for me?”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
His voice became louder.
“You controlled me.”
For the first time, Elena looked hurt.
“I watched your father destroy himself because of love.”
Diego froze.
His mother continued.
“He chose a woman over his family. Over his responsibilities. Over everything.”
“And you thought I would become him?”
“I thought you would lose everything.”
Diego shook his head.
“No.”
He looked away.
“You made me lose something.”
A painful silence followed.
“My daughter.”
Those two words destroyed Elena’s confidence.
Because even she understood.
There were some mistakes money could never repair.
That night, Diego stood outside Valentina’s bedroom door.
He had never been inside.
He did not know if he was allowed.
He was a stranger trying to become a father.
Slowly, he opened the door.
The small room was filled with drawings.
Flowers.
Animals.
Pictures of three people.
A family.
Valentina was asleep, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Diego walked closer.
He sat beside the bed.
For several minutes, he simply watched her.
The child who shared his blood.
The child who had grown up without him.
A small movement.
Valentina opened her eyes.
“Papa?”
Diego froze.
She had said it.
Not because someone forced her.
Not because someone taught her.
Because her heart accepted him.
He swallowed hard.
“Yes.”
The little girl smiled.
“Are you staying?”
The question was simple.
But it carried three years of absence.
Diego felt his chest tighten.
“Yes.”
He gently held her hand.
“I’m staying.”
From outside the room, Marisol watched silently.
And for the first time in three years…
She allowed herself to believe something impossible.
Maybe her daughter would finally have the father she deserved.
But she did not see the shadow standing at the end of the hallway.
Paulina.
Watching.
Listening.
And planning.
Because she had lost control of Diego.
But she had not lost the war.
She looked at Valentina sleeping peacefully.
Then whispered:
“You took everything from me.”
Her eyes turned cold.
“So I will take everything from you.”
May you like
And somewhere deep inside the mansion…
A new battle began.
