CHAPTER 7: THE LIE BEHIND THE LIE

CHAPTER 7: THE LIE BEHIND THE LIE

The name on the document stared back at Diego like an old wound reopening.

Alejandro Cruz.

For several seconds, he could not move.

The room around him disappeared.

The voices outside his office.

The sound of the city below.

Even the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Everything became distant.

Because one name had just challenged everything he believed.

Alejandro Cruz.

The man from Marisol's past.

The man she once loved before Diego.

The man who disappeared when she needed him most.

The man who now claimed he was Valentina's father.

Diego slowly placed the document on the desk.

His hands were calm.

But inside…

Everything was collapsing.

"Who gave you this?"

Diego's voice was cold.

His lawyer, Adrian, looked uncomfortable.

"It was delivered anonymously this morning."

"Anonymous?"

"Yes."

Diego picked up the paper again.

The document claimed Alejandro Cruz had a biological connection to Valentina.

It requested recognition.

It requested custody rights.

It requested access to the child.

A stranger was trying to enter his daughter's life.

And the worst part…

Was that the stranger was not completely unknown.

Diego remembered the name.

Years ago, Marisol had mentioned him.

Only once.

She had told Diego she had loved someone before.

Someone who promised forever.

Someone who left.

At the time, Diego had not been jealous.

Because Marisol's eyes had made one thing clear.

Her heart belonged to him.

But now…

That forgotten chapter had returned.

Marisol knew something was wrong the moment she saw Diego's face.

She found him in the library.

The document was on the table.

Her heart stopped.

Because she recognized the name before she even saw it clearly.

"Alejandro."

The whisper escaped her lips.

Diego looked at her.

"You know him."

It was not a question.

Marisol became silent.

And that silence hurt him more than he expected.

"Marisol."

She looked down.

"Yes."

A thousand thoughts crossed Diego's mind.

But one question mattered.

"Is he Valentina's father?"

The pain in his voice was impossible to hide.

Marisol looked at him.

And immediately understood what he was thinking.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Fear.

Fear that he had finally found his daughter…

Only to lose her again.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"No, Diego."

She stepped closer.

"Valentina is your daughter."

"Then why is his name on this?"

"I don't know."

Her voice trembled.

"But I know one thing."

She looked toward the hallway where Valentina was playing.

"Alejandro left us."

A pause.

"He disappeared before she was born."

Three years earlier.

Before the Villaseñor mansion.

Before the billionaire.

Before the secret.

Marisol had been alone.

Pregnant.

Afraid.

And desperate.

She searched for Alejandro.

The man who had promised he would never abandon her.

But his apartment was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

His workplace said he had resigned.

It was as if he had never existed.

Then came Diego.

The man who gave her hope again.

The man who made her believe love could be real.

But when Diego disappeared from her life after his family intervened…

Marisol had been left with nothing.

No Alejandro.

No Diego.

Only Valentina.

And she decided that was enough.

"I need the truth."

Diego's voice pulled her back.

Marisol looked at him.

"I am telling you the truth."

"Everything."

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Alejandro was my first love."

The words were painful.

But Diego stayed silent.

"He was not a bad person when we were together."

A pause.

"But he was weak."

She looked away.

"He always chose the easy way out."

Diego listened.

"When I became pregnant, he promised he would come back."

Her fingers tightened.

"He never did."

"And you never found him?"

"No."

"Never?"

"No."

Diego looked at the document.

"Then why now?"

Neither of them had an answer.

The answer came from someone else.

Paulina.

She sat across from her father in his private office.

Ricardo Robles looked older than before.

The pressure was beginning to show.

"You brought him back."

It was not a question.

Paulina looked at him.

"You said we needed another weapon."

Ricardo leaned back.

"I said we needed protection."

"And Alejandro is protection."

Her father laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Paulina frowned.

"What?"

"The problem is not Diego."

She remained silent.

"The problem is the truth."

Ricardo opened a drawer.

Inside was an old file.

A file he had kept hidden for years.

"The moment Diego discovers everything, we lose."

Paulina looked at the folder.

"What is inside?"

Her father looked at her.

"The reason Marisol disappeared."

That evening, Diego received another message.

A location.

No name.

No explanation.

Only one sentence:

"If you want the truth about Valentina's birth, come alone."

He should have ignored it.

A businessman would have ignored it.

A billionaire would have sent security.

But a father…

A father could not ignore anything involving his child.

So Diego went.

The location was an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The kind of place where secrets were buried.

Not revealed.

Diego entered carefully.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"You look different."

Diego stopped.

A man stepped forward.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Alejandro Cruz.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Diego said:

"You have five minutes."

Alejandro smiled bitterly.

"Still arrogant."

"Still disappearing when things become difficult?"

The words hit.

Alejandro looked away.

"I deserve that."

"Why are you here?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Because Valentina is not the only secret."

Diego's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

Alejandro took a deep breath.

"Three years ago, I did not leave Marisol because I wanted to."

Diego stared.

"I was forced."

"By who?"

Alejandro looked directly at him.

"Your family."

The answer felt impossible.

But Diego had already learned one painful lesson.

Impossible things could be true.

Alejandro continued.

"When I found out Marisol was pregnant, I went to see her."

Diego listened.

"I wanted to take responsibility."

A bitter smile.

"I was not ready. I was scared. But I wanted to do the right thing."

"Then what happened?"

"Someone threatened me."

"Who?"

Alejandro hesitated.

Then said:

"Ricardo Robles."

Paulina's father.

Diego felt his stomach tighten.

"Why?"

"Because he wanted you to marry Paulina."

The pieces began connecting.

The lies.

The missing messages.

Marisol's disappearance.

The pressure.

Everything.

"But why would he care about me and Marisol?"

Alejandro looked at him.

"Because Paulina had already decided you belonged to her."

Back at the mansion, Marisol sat beside Valentina's bed.

She watched her daughter sleep.

She had always believed the hardest part of her life was surviving alone.

She was wrong.

The hardest part was discovering that the people who caused her pain were still powerful.

Still nearby.

Still dangerous.

Her phone rang.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

Only one line.

"You should have stayed away from Diego."

Marisol froze.

Another message followed.

"Next time, you won't just lose your place in the mansion."

Her hands trembled.

Because now she understood.

This was never just about money.

This was never just about Paulina's engagement.

Someone had spent three years controlling their lives.

And they were not finished.

When Diego returned to the mansion, his face was different.

Marisol immediately knew.

"What happened?"

He looked at her.

At Valentina.

At the life they were finally rebuilding.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Alejandro was forced to disappear."

Marisol covered her mouth.

"By who?"

Diego's eyes hardened.

"Ricardo Robles."

Her blood ran cold.

"Paulina's father?"

He nodded.

"And that's not the worst part."

"What else?"

Diego took out the old file Alejandro gave him.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph from three years ago.

A photograph showing Ricardo Robles meeting Elena Villaseñor.

The two people who supposedly had nothing to do with each other.

The two people who both claimed they were protecting Diego.

But together…

They had destroyed his life.

Diego looked at the picture.

Then whispered:

"My entire family was built on a lie."

And somewhere in the darkness…

Paulina received a call.

"Diego knows."

Her face went pale.

"How much?"

The answer was simple.

"Enough."

For the first time…

Paulina Robles felt true fear.

Because secrets could be controlled.

Lies could be protected.

May you like

But once the truth escaped…

Even the most powerful families could fall.
