Chapter 6 — The Secret in the Nursery

Chapter 6 — The Secret in the Nursery

The phone stopped ringing before Nathan could answer it.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Grace stood beside the window, holding Lily against her chest.

Daniel stared at the message on Nathan's screen.

CHARLES COLE.

Alive.

The name seemed impossible.

Nathan had watched his father's coffin disappear beneath wet earth.

He had stood beside the grave.

He had listened to the priest speak about a man who had supposedly died after complications from heart surgery.

He had inherited the company.

He had inherited the house.

He had inherited the debts.

He had inherited the secrets.

But apparently, he had not inherited the truth.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"Tell me he's dead."

Daniel didn't answer.

"Daniel."

"I believed he was."

"That's not what I asked."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"I haven't seen a death certificate with my own eyes."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"Then we've been living inside a lie."

Grace looked at the photograph.

"That's not the worst part."

Nathan turned.

"What?"

She pointed to the background.

"The nursery."

Nathan zoomed in.

Behind his father stood a room with pale blue walls.

A white crib.

A mobile shaped like clouds.

Nathan's breath caught.

He knew that room.

It was the nursery from the photograph.

The nursery in the house he had inherited.

The nursery he had never understood.

He had always assumed it belonged to his childhood.

It didn't.

It had been prepared for Lily.

Before Nathan knew she existed.

They returned to the Cole mansion just before dawn.

The house was dark.

Nathan unlocked the front door.

Every room looked exactly as he remembered.

Expensive.

Cold.

Controlled.

Grace stayed close to him.

Lily slept in her arms.

Daniel followed with a flashlight.

"Where is the nursery?" Grace whispered.

"Third floor."

They climbed the stairs.

Nathan hadn't been up there in years.

The hallway smelled faintly of cedar.

At the end stood a white door.

Nathan stopped.

He had seen it before.

But he'd never opened it.

His father had always called it the storage room.

Nathan reached for the handle.

Locked.

Grace stared at him.

"Why would a storage room be locked?"

Nathan didn't answer.

He took the key from his pocket.

The same key he'd found in his grandfather's study.

E.V.

He inserted it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Nathan stopped breathing.

The room was not storage.

It was a nursery.

Perfectly preserved.

Pale blue walls.

White crib.

Wooden rocking chair.

Cloud-shaped mobile.

A tiny dresser.

On the wall hung a photograph.

Grace.

Pregnant.

Nathan.

Smiling.

They were standing beside the crib.

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"I've never seen this."

Nathan couldn't speak.

There were toys on the floor.

Books on the shelves.

A stuffed rabbit resting inside the crib.

Lily stirred in Grace's arms.

Then she looked into the room.

Her eyes widened.

"That's my bunny."

Grace froze.

"What?"

Lily pointed.

"The bunny."

Nathan walked toward the crib.

The stuffed rabbit was old.

Its fur had faded.

A small embroidered heart was sewn into its chest.

Nathan picked it up.

Lily reached for it.

"Mine."

Nathan gave it to her.

She hugged it.

Grace stared.

"How does she know that?"

Nathan looked at the rabbit.

He noticed something underneath the fabric.

A tiny metal zipper.

He opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Nathan unfolded it.

Three words.

She remembers everything.

Grace went pale.

"Who wrote that?"

Nathan turned the paper over.

A name.

Elena.

Daniel searched the room.

"There's something else."

He pointed toward the wall.

Behind a row of children's books was a hidden compartment.

Nathan opened it.

Inside were videotapes.

Dozens.

Each labeled with a date.

Grace's hands trembled.

"Those are from before Lily was born."

Nathan picked one up.

The label read:

DAY 3 — NURSERY

Another:

DAY 12 — GRACE

Another:

DAY 21 — NATHAN

Daniel looked at him.

"Someone was recording you."

Nathan's face hardened.

"Why?"

Grace whispered:

"To study us."

They found an old television in the corner.

Nathan inserted the first tape.

Static filled the screen.

Then the nursery appeared.

Grace was sitting in the rocking chair.

She was pregnant.

Nathan was beside her.

He was smiling.

The footage was dated five years earlier.

Nathan stared.

"I don't remember this."

Grace began crying.

On the screen, Nathan was talking.

"I want to name her Lily."

Grace smiled.

"I like Lily."

Nathan's recorded voice continued.

"Whatever happens, I'm going to protect you."

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan watched himself.

He had promised.

Then the screen changed.

His father entered the room.

Charles stood behind them.

Nathan's recorded self stiffened.

"Why are you here?"

Charles smiled.

"To talk."

Grace's expression became fearful.

The recording continued.

Charles placed a folder on the crib.

"You know the arrangement."

Nathan shook his head.

"No."

"You agreed."

"I agreed to the company."

"Not just the company."

Charles looked at Grace.

"You agreed to the child."

Nathan stood.

"You said she would be protected."

"I said she would be provided for."

"That's not the same thing."

Charles's face hardened.

"You don't understand what you've inherited."

Nathan stepped closer.

"I understand exactly what you've done."

The screen flickered.

Charles spoke quietly.

"If you refuse, Grace disappears."

Nathan's recorded face changed.

"Don't threaten her."

"I'm not threatening."

Charles smiled.

"I'm explaining consequences."

The video ended.

Nathan stood motionless.

Grace was crying.

"You remembered enough," she whispered.

Nathan turned toward her.

"I tried."

"What?"

"I tried to fight him."

She nodded.

"I know."

Another tape.

This one showed Elena.

She was standing beside the crib.

Lily was sleeping.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, then Charles failed."

She smiled sadly.

"Good."

Nathan leaned forward.

Elena continued.

"Lily was never meant to inherit the company."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

Grace looked at him.

Elena continued.

"Charles created a trust because he believed Nathan would eventually become uncontrollable."

She paused.

"The trust was never about protecting Lily."

"It was about controlling Nathan."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

Elena explained.

"If Nathan refuses to obey Charles, Lily's inheritance becomes inaccessible."

"If Nathan obeys, Lily becomes the public heir."

"And whoever controls Lily controls Nathan."

Grace whispered:

"That was the plan."

Elena nodded on the screen.

"But there is one thing Charles doesn't know."

She looked toward the camera.

"Your grandfather created a second trust."

Nathan froze.

"My grandfather?"

Elena smiled.

"Yes."

She walked to the crib.

"Your grandfather believed his son had become dangerous."

She placed a hand on the baby's blanket.

"So he protected the child secretly."

The video ended.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"Where is the second trust?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Grace looked at the stuffed rabbit.

"The bunny."

Nathan turned.

"What?"

"The note."

Grace took the rabbit from Lily.

She opened the zipper again.

Inside the lining was another compartment.

Nathan reached inside.

He pulled out a small brass key.

Engraved on it:

C-17

Daniel frowned.

"That's not a key."

"What is it?"

"A locker number."

They found the locker at an old private bank.

The branch had closed eight years earlier.

Nathan used the brass key.

The locker opened.

Inside was a single box.

No money.

No jewelry.

No documents.

Only a cassette.

Nathan inserted it into the player Daniel had brought.

His grandfather's voice filled the small room.

"Nathan, if you are hearing this, I am dead."

Nathan's eyes filled.

His grandfather continued.

"Your father will tell you I was senile."

A pause.

"He will tell you I didn't understand the company."

Another pause.

"Do not believe him."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"I discovered what Charles was doing."

The voice became weaker.

"He believes wealth gives him the right to own people."

"I disagree."

"I created a trust for Grace and Lily."

Nathan's breath caught.

"It cannot be accessed by Charles."

"It cannot be accessed by Nathan until he proves that he has rejected his father's system."

Nathan looked at Grace.

"What does that mean?"

The tape continued.

"Your father will eventually force you to choose."

"Choose your inheritance, Nathan."

"Or choose your family."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel noticed the second envelope inside the box.

He opened it.

A legal document.

Nathan read the first paragraph.

Then stopped.

"The trust is activated when the biological father publicly acknowledges the child."

Grace stared.

Nathan looked at Lily.

He understood.

The moment he publicly acknowledged Lily as his daughter, his grandfather's trust would become active.

And that trust could destroy Charles's control over the empire.

But there was another clause.

Nathan read it aloud.

"The trust shall remain protected only if the child's biological father relinquishes all controlling interest in Cole Industries."

Silence.

Grace looked at him.

"They're asking you to give up the company."

Nathan looked at the document.

His father's empire.

The company he had spent years building.

The name that had defined him.

The wealth that had surrounded him since birth.

He looked at Lily.

She was playing with the stuffed rabbit.

Nathan smiled.

"Then they can have the company."

Grace stared.

"Nathan."

"I'm serious."

"You don't understand what you're giving up."

"I do."

He looked at her.

"I'm giving up a prison."

But there was one final page.

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

"Nathan."

"What?"

"There's a condition."

"What condition?"

Daniel handed him the paper.

Nathan read it.

His expression slowly hardened.

"The trust doesn't activate unless Grace is declared a fit parent."

Grace went still.

"They'll never allow that."

"Then we prove she is."

Daniel shook his head.

"It's not that simple."

"Why?"

"The same trust contains a provision allowing an appointed family trustee to challenge her fitness."

"Who?"

Nathan already knew.

He read the name.

Victoria Hale.

Grace closed her eyes.

"They planned everything."

Nathan looked at the documents.

"No."

He shook his head.

"Not everything."

"What do you mean?"

Nathan picked up the cassette.

"Grandfather left us another advantage."

He pointed to the final line.

The trustee may be removed only by unanimous consent of the surviving family members.

Daniel frowned.

"Charles is dead."

"Supposedly."

"Victoria is alive."

Nathan nodded.

"And my mother..."

He stopped.

Grace finished the sentence.

"...may be alive too."

Nathan looked toward the door.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Nathan."

His entire body froze.

He knew that voice.

"Mom?"

A breath.

Then:

"Do not trust the DNA test."

Nathan's heart stopped.

"What?"

"The child is yours."

"Then what do you mean?"

Silence.

His mother's voice returned.

"Someone altered the report."

Nathan looked at Grace.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Lily is your daughter."

He exhaled.

"Then why did you tell me not to trust it?"

"Because the DNA test contains something they don't want you to see."

"What?"

A pause.

Then:

"Another father."

Nathan's blood turned cold.

"What?"

"The report doesn't just identify Lily's parents."

His mother whispered:

"It identifies who changed her blood."

The line went dead.

Nathan stood frozen.

Grace looked at him.

"What happened?"

Nathan slowly lowered the phone.

"My mother says the DNA report was altered."

Grace stared.

"But Lily is your daughter."

"I know."

"Then what was altered?"

Nathan looked at the nursery.

At the photographs.

At the tapes.

At the hidden documents.

Then he understood.

Someone hadn't altered the result to make Lily somebody else's child.

They had altered it to hide something else.

Something inside Lily's DNA.

Something Charles had known about before she was born.

Something that could explain why everyone had been willing to kill, lie, disappear, and destroy lives just to control one little girl.

Nathan looked at Grace.

"We need the original DNA sample."

Grace's face went pale.

"Why?"

"Because my mother said there's another father."

Outside the nursery window, a black car stopped.

A man stepped out.

He looked up toward the third floor.

Then he smiled.

He was holding an envelope marked:

DNA — ORIGINAL.

May you like

And written beneath it were four words:

THE TEST WASN'T THE LIE.
