Chapter 13 – The Fall

Chapter 13 – The Fall
Julian stared at the message on his phone.
Come alone if you ever want to know how your father really died.
Beneath the words was the address of an abandoned warehouse in the old industrial district.
His pulse quickened.
For years, he had believed his father had died from a sudden heart attack.
Now, for the second time in two days, someone was telling him that the story he had accepted his entire life was incomplete.
Victor noticed the color drain from Julian's face.
"What is it?"
Without a word, Julian handed him the phone.
Victor read the message once.
Then again.
Finally, he looked up.
"They're baiting you."
"I know."
"But what if they're telling the truth?"
Ruiz took the phone.
"We'll trace the number."
Within seconds, a forensic technician connected the device to specialized equipment.
Five minutes later, he shook his head.
"Disposable phone."
"No registration."
"No signal history."
"It transmitted once and then went dead."
Victor folded his arms.
"They expected that."
The Argument
"I'm going," Julian said.
"No," Hars answered immediately.
"I'm not asking for permission."
"And I'm not letting you walk into another trap."
Julian turned toward her.
His eyes were tired.
"I need answers."
"So do I."
She stepped closer.
"But Noah needs his father more than you need revenge."
"It isn't revenge."
"What is it?"
He hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
"I need to know whether my father died trying to protect us."
Silence filled the room.
Elena slowly stood.
"He did."
Julian looked at her.
"You don't know that."
"I know him."
"He would have."
Victor interrupted.
"Which is exactly why whoever sent this message wants you there."
Ruiz nodded.
"If they can separate you from the rest of us..."
"...they control the situation."
Julian looked around the room.
For the first time, he realized he wasn't alone anymore.
His family.
His sister.
His wife.
His son.
People were finally standing beside him.
He took a slow breath.
"Then we do this together."
The Warehouse
The abandoned industrial district had been deserted for nearly twenty years.
Rusted factories lined cracked streets.
Broken windows reflected the gray afternoon sky.
Weeds pushed through the concrete.
Everything felt forgotten.
Police vehicles stopped several blocks away.
Ruiz didn't want to alert anyone inside.
The team continued on foot.
Victor led the way.
Rebecca remained with Hars and Noah at the command vehicle while additional officers surrounded the perimeter.
Julian, Elena, Ruiz, and Victor approached the warehouse in silence.
Its massive steel doors stood half open.
Inside...
Darkness.
Victor raised a hand.
"Wait."
He knelt near the entrance.
Fresh tire tracks.
Several sets of footprints.
Someone had been there recently.
Very recently.
He looked at Ruiz.
"We're not the first visitors."
Inside
The warehouse smelled of oil and rust.
Sunlight streamed through broken skylights high above.
Rows of abandoned machinery cast long shadows across the floor.
Julian noticed something unusual immediately.
There was electricity.
A single light bulb glowed at the far end of the building.
Beneath it stood an old wooden desk.
On top rested a tape recorder.
Nothing else.
Ruiz approached cautiously.
"No movement."
Victor scanned the upper walkways.
"Too quiet."
Julian reached the desk.
A handwritten note lay beside the recorder.
Press Play.
Ruiz shook his head.
"It could be rigged."
Victor examined the device carefully.
"No explosives."
Julian pressed the button.
The tape clicked.
Then...
His father's voice filled the warehouse.
"Julian..."
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I've failed."
The familiar voice echoed through the empty building.
"I always believed I had more time."
"I was wrong."
Julian closed his eyes.
His father's breathing sounded strained.
"As soon as you discovered the journal..."
"...they would come."
Victor frowned.
"They?"
The recording continued.
"I couldn't expose Adrian."
"Not because I lacked evidence..."
"...but because Adrian was never his real name."
Julian exchanged a confused glance with Elena.
"I spent years trying to learn who he really worked for."
A cough interrupted the recording.
Then—
"I discovered something much worse."
The tape crackled.
"He doesn't destroy families..."
"He studies them."
"He finds the weakest wound..."
"...and slowly turns it into a weapon."
Julian looked toward Elena.
Her face had gone pale.
"My mother..."
His father's voice answered as though he had heard the question.
"Your mother was never innocent."
"But she was also never his first victim."
Silence settled over the warehouse.
Ruiz whispered,
"My God..."
Suddenly—
A loud metallic clang echoed overhead.
Victor spun toward the sound.
"Movement!"
A figure appeared on the second-floor catwalk.
Black clothing.
Face hidden.
The same masked attacker from the courthouse.
Ruiz drew his weapon.
"Police!"
The man laughed.
"You came."
His voice echoed through the building.
Julian stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
"I told you before."
"I only need one person."
He pointed directly at Elena.
She stepped in front of Julian instead.
"No."
The attacker tilted his head.
"So much like your father."
Before anyone could react—
The warehouse lights shut off.
Darkness swallowed everything.
The Chase
Emergency flashlights snapped on.
Footsteps thundered above them.
Victor shouted,
"He's moving!"
The team raced toward the staircase.
The masked man sprinted across the catwalk.
Ruiz fired one warning shot.
The bullet struck steel inches from the attacker's feet.
He never slowed.
Victor reached the upper level first.
The attacker crashed through a side door.
Victor followed.
Julian and Ruiz were only seconds behind.
The chase spilled onto the roof.
Wind howled across the rusted metal.
The masked man reached the edge.
No escape.
Victor leveled his pistol.
"It's over."
The attacker slowly raised his hands.
Then...
He laughed.
"You still don't understand."
Julian stepped closer.
"Take off the mask."
The man looked directly at him.
"You've been looking in the wrong direction."
He pulled off the respirator.
Everyone froze.
Ruiz frowned.
"I don't know you."
Julian didn't either.
The man smiled.
"Exactly."
He reached into his jacket.
Ruiz shouted,
"Don't move!"
Instead of drawing a weapon...
The man removed a small photograph.
He tossed it toward Julian.
The wind carried it across the rooftop.
Julian caught it.
His breath caught.
The photograph showed his father.
Standing beside...
Dr. Marcus Hale.
And a third man.
His face had been deliberately burned away.
Only one sentence remained visible on the back.
He trusted the wrong friend.
Julian looked up.
"Who is he?"
The attacker smiled.
"You'll never know from me."
Before Victor could stop him—
The man stepped backward.
Off the roof.
Julian lunged.
Too late.
The attacker disappeared over the edge.
A sickening crash echoed below.
Everyone rushed to the railing.
Ruiz looked down.
Nothing.
No body.
Only a shattered wooden scaffold several stories below.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"He planned this."
They hurried downstairs.
The scaffold was empty.
Only the black respirator remained.
Beside it lay another envelope addressed to Julian.
Inside was a single page.
Typed in bold black letters:
Your father didn't lose.
He ran out of time.
Ask Marcus Hale who visited him the night before he died.
Ruiz slowly folded the paper.
"This changes everything."
Julian looked toward the city skyline beyond the warehouse windows.
His father's final battle hadn't ended with his death.
It had merely been passed to the next generation.
And somewhere, hidden behind another false name and another carefully crafted identity...
The real architect of his family's destruction was still watching.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
Julian understood one terrifying truth.
Skat had been the face of his family's suffering.
May you like
But she had never been the mastermind.
