Chapter 9 – No Way Back

Chapter 9 – No Way Back

The explosion ripped through the courthouse like a violent wave.

The conference room walls trembled.

Glass shattered across the floor as the overhead lights flickered wildly before plunging half the corridor into darkness.

Smoke seeped beneath the door in thick gray ribbons.

The fire alarm erupted into a deafening shriek.

For a split second, everyone froze.

Then instinct took over.

Officer Daniel Ruiz pulled his service weapon.

"Everybody stay low!"

Julian immediately dropped beside Hars, wrapping one arm around her while shielding Noah's carrier with his body.

The baby woke with a frightened cry.

Hars cradled him tightly.

"It's okay... Mommy's here..."

But her trembling voice betrayed her fear.

Across the room, Elena remained calm despite the chaos.

She moved toward the window.

"It's not fire."

Ruiz looked up.

"What?"

"The smoke."

She pointed.

"It's coming from the hallway, not outside."

Rebecca Lawson frowned.

"Someone wants to force people into the corridors."

Ruiz's expression darkened.

"A funnel."

The realization hit all of them at once.

The explosion wasn't the real attack.

It was designed to move people exactly where someone wanted them.

Outside the courthouse...

Panic spread across the front steps.

Employees rushed through the main entrance.

Lawyers abandoned briefcases.

Parents clutched frightened children.

Police officers shouted directions.

"Move away from the building!"

"Keep walking!"

"Don't stop!"

Victor Kane watched everything from across the street.

His military instincts immediately recognized something wrong.

The blast had been too controlled.

Too precise.

Not enough damage.

Too much confusion.

Someone wasn't trying to destroy the courthouse.

Someone was hunting.

He reached beneath his seat and retrieved a compact pair of binoculars.

Scanning the upper floors, he noticed movement.

Not fleeing.

Watching.

A man dressed in a maintenance uniform stood calmly behind a third-floor window.

Everyone else was running.

He wasn't.

Victor whispered,

"Who are you?"

The man disappeared before Victor could react.

Back inside...

Ruiz cautiously cracked open the conference room door.

Smoke drifted through the corridor, reducing visibility to only a few feet.

Emergency lights cast everything in an eerie crimson glow.

His radio crackled.

"Officer Ruiz, report!"

"This is Ruiz."

"We've lost surveillance on the third floor."

Ruiz's heart skipped.

"What happened?"

"Cameras are offline."

"When?"

"Thirty seconds before the explosion."

Ruiz slowly lowered the radio.

Someone had planned this carefully.

Julian looked at him.

"What do we do?"

Ruiz thought for only a second.

"We don't use the main hallway."

Rebecca nodded immediately.

"The emergency stairwell."

Ruiz agreed.

"Exactly."

He turned toward everyone.

"Stay together."

"No one separates."

Julian lifted Noah into his arms.

The baby's tiny fingers gripped his father's shirt.

The innocent gesture strengthened Julian's resolve.

Whatever happened next...

His family was leaving together.

They slipped into the smoke-filled corridor.

The alarms echoed endlessly through the building.

Sprinklers activated overhead, soaking the floor in icy water.

Visibility dropped even further.

Ruiz led the way.

Rebecca stayed behind him.

Julian walked in the center, holding Noah while Hars clung to his arm.

Elena brought up the rear.

Every sound felt amplified.

Footsteps.

Shouting.

Breaking glass.

Sirens outside.

Then—

Footsteps.

Different.

Steady.

Measured.

Someone else was walking nearby.

Ruiz stopped.

"So did everyone hear that?"

Rebecca nodded.

"I did."

Silence.

The footsteps stopped too.

Whoever it was...

Had heard them.

Several yards away, hidden by the smoke...

A tall figure stood perfectly still.

Black tactical clothing.

Black gloves.

Black mask.

The figure held no firearm.

Instead...

A long hunting knife rested loosely in one hand.

The figure tilted its head, listening.

Waiting.

Ruiz gestured silently.

Move.

The group continued toward the emergency stairwell.

Every step felt painfully loud.

The smoke became thicker.

Hars coughed violently.

Julian squeezed her hand.

"We're almost there."

She nodded.

Trying to believe him.

Suddenly—

A scream echoed from somewhere below.

Then another.

Then silence.

No one spoke.

Ruiz knew that scream.

Not panic.

Pain.

Real pain.

He looked toward Rebecca.

"We're moving faster."

They reached the heavy metal stairwell door.

Ruiz grabbed the handle.

Locked.

His expression hardened.

"Impossible."

Emergency exits never locked from the inside.

Rebecca examined the frame.

Fresh scratch marks surrounded the locking mechanism.

Someone had jammed it shut.

"It was sabotaged."

Julian felt despair creeping in.

"What now?"

Ruiz looked around.

"There has to be another exit."

Then—

A metallic clang echoed behind them.

All five adults turned simultaneously.

A fire extinguisher rolled slowly across the wet floor.

No one had touched it.

It stopped only a few feet away.

The corridor fell silent again.

Then a voice emerged through the smoke.

Calm.

Distorted.

"You should've stayed home."

Hars felt every hair on her body stand up.

Julian stepped in front of his family.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

Instead...

A silhouette appeared.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Face hidden behind a black respirator mask.

The hunting knife reflected the flashing emergency lights.

Ruiz immediately drew his pistol.

"Police!"

"Drop the weapon!"

The figure laughed softly.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

"You won't shoot."

Ruiz's finger tightened on the trigger.

"I will."

The stranger slowly took another step forward.

"You can't."

"There are civilians behind me."

Ruiz aimed directly at the center of the figure's chest.

The masked stranger spread both arms.

"Go ahead."

Rebecca whispered,

"Something's wrong."

Ruiz realized it too.

The man wanted to be shot.

Why?

Then he noticed.

A small blinking device attached beneath the stranger's jacket.

A bomb trigger.

Not large.

But enough.

Ruiz's blood ran cold.

"Nobody move."

Julian's pulse raced.

"What is it?"

"Explosives."

Hars gasped.

The masked figure smiled beneath the respirator.

"You figured it out."

He tapped the device lightly.

"If my heart stops..."

He shrugged.

"...everyone nearby dies."

Silence consumed the corridor.

Julian stared.

The man wasn't bluffing.

His voice remained unnervingly calm.

"I only need one person."

His gaze settled directly on Elena.

"You."

Julian instinctively stepped between them.

"No."

The figure sighed.

"Family."

He laughed quietly.

"It always complicates things."

Elena suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Julian grabbed her arm.

"What are you doing?"

She looked at him.

"If he wants me..."

"We don't know that."

"I do."

She turned back toward the masked man.

"You've been looking for me."

The stranger inclined his head.

"For many years."

Julian frowned.

"You know him?"

Elena's face turned pale.

"I've never seen him."

"But..."

She swallowed.

"I know who sent him."

Every eye turned toward her.

She whispered only one name.

"...Adrian."

The masked man's posture stiffened.

For the first time...

He seemed surprised.

"So."

His voice became colder.

"You remember."

Julian looked between them.

"Who is Adrian?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"The man I was supposed to marry."

Silence.

"He wasn't just my fiancé."

She looked directly at the masked stranger.

"He worked for someone."

The stranger smiled.

"And now..."

He slowly raised the knife.

"...he wants you back."

Before anyone could react—

A gunshot exploded through the corridor.

Not from Ruiz.

From somewhere behind the masked man.

The stranger staggered forward.

A bullet had struck his shoulder.

Smoke swirled as another figure emerged from the haze.

Victor Kane.

Holding a pistol.

His voice thundered through the corridor.

"Everybody get down!"

The masked attacker spun toward Victor.

Ruiz seized the opportunity.

"Run!"

Julian grabbed Hars and Noah.

Rebecca pulled Elena.

The group sprinted toward the opposite hallway as gunfire erupted behind them.

Bullets ricocheted off concrete walls.

Sprinkler water sprayed into the air.

Victor fired again.

The masked attacker disappeared into the smoke.

Within seconds...

He was gone.

Ruiz reached the corner and slammed another emergency exit open.

Fresh air flooded inside.

"Move!"

One by one they escaped into the daylight.

Paramedics rushed toward them.

Police surrounded the area.

Firefighters poured into the courthouse.

Julian collapsed onto one knee, still holding Noah tightly against his chest.

Hars wrapped both arms around him.

Neither of them noticed Victor walking away.

Until Ruiz called after him.

"Wait!"

Victor stopped.

Ruiz approached carefully.

"You just saved six lives."

Victor looked back toward the burning courthouse.

"No."

His expression remained grim.

"I just delayed the next attack."

He reached into his jacket and handed Ruiz a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in the attacker's van."

Ruiz opened it.

His face immediately lost all color.

Across the page were six printed photographs.

Julian.

Hars.

Noah.

Elena.

Rebecca.

And...

Officer Daniel Ruiz.

Beneath every photograph was a single word.

ELIMINATE.

Ruiz slowly looked up.

"This isn't over."

Victor nodded.

"No."

May you like

He glanced toward the shaken Carter family.

"It hasn't even really begun."
