Chapter 13 â The Hunt

Chapter 13 â The Hunt
The word followed Ryan everywhere.
Video.
A single word.
A single piece of evidence.
But it carried thirty-five years of unanswered questions.
The night his father died.
The night Claire disappeared.
The night Evelyn became the unquestioned authority in the Whitmore family.
Ryan sat in his car outside the police station, unable to move.
Maya sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
Because both knew what was coming.
The truth they had been searching for...
Might finally destroy the last version of their family they still had left.
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Victor Whitmore sat in an interview room.
He looked nothing like the powerful attorney Ryan imagined.
The man who had once controlled legal battles.
The man who had helped Evelyn create her perfect image.
Now he looked exhausted.
Old.
Defeated.
His hands shook as he held a cup of untouched coffee.
Detective Carter placed a file on the table.
"You requested immunity."
Victor nodded.
"I did."
"Why?"
Victor stared at the table.
"Because I know what I helped create."
Carter remained silent.
Victor continued.
"For years, I told myself I was protecting family."
"But the truth is..."
"I was protecting Evelyn."
The Brother Who Failed
Ryan entered the room.
Victor looked up.
The moment their eyes met, shame crossed his face.
"You look like him."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"Don't."
Victor lowered his eyes.
"You have every right to hate me."
Ryan sat across from him.
"I don't know you."
"That's the problem."
Victor swallowed.
"You should have known me."
A painful silence followed.
"Your father trusted me."
Ryan leaned forward.
"Then why did you betray him?"
Victor closed his eyes.
"Because I was afraid."
Ryan almost laughed.
"Afraid of my mother?"
Victor looked at him.
"Yes."
The answer was immediate.
Honest.
And somehow worse.
Evelyn's Power
Victor explained what Ryan had never known.
Evelyn's influence had started long before Thomas realized it.
She collected information.
Secrets.
Weaknesses.
She didn't threaten people immediately.
She waited.
She watched.
She learned.
Then when the time came...
She used what she knew.
"Your mother didn't force people to obey her," Victor said.
"She made them believe they had no choice."
Ryan thought about Patricia.
Vincent.
Harold.
Everyone who had been trapped.
"How many people did she control?"
Victor looked away.
"Too many."
The Night of the Death
Detective Carter placed a recorder on the table.
"Tell us what happened."
Victor took a deep breath.
"Thomas came to see me that night."
"Why?"
"He had discovered something."
"What?"
Victor hesitated.
Then:
"That Evelyn had been moving money."
Ryan frowned.
"What money?"
"Family accounts."
"Business accounts."
"Trust funds."
Ryan's face changed.
"My inheritance?"
Victor nodded.
"Your father's company."
"He had evidence she had been preparing for years."
"She wasn't just trying to control people."
"She was building financial control."
The Last Meeting
Victor continued.
"Thomas wanted to file for divorce."
Ryan looked down.
He had heard this before.
But hearing it from Victor made it real.
"He wanted custody of Ryan."
"He wanted Claire back in his life."
"He wanted everything exposed."
Carter asked:
"What happened after the meeting?"
Victor looked terrified.
"I called Evelyn."
The room became silent.
Ryan stared.
"You called her?"
Victor nodded.
"I made the worst mistake of my life."
The Betrayal
Victor admitted he told Evelyn everything.
The plan.
The documents.
The evidence.
Thomas's intentions.
"Why?"
Ryan's voice was cold.
Victor looked at him.
"Because she threatened my family."
"What did she threaten?"
Victor's face changed.
"She knew about my illegal dealings."
Ryan froze.
"Illegal?"
Victor nodded.
"Years earlier, I had helped her hide assets."
"If I turned against her, she would destroy me."
Ryan stared.
"So you chose yourself."
Victor looked down.
"Yes."
The answer was painful because it was true.
The Final Argument
Victor described what happened after he called Evelyn.
"She arrived at my office."
"Thomas was already there."
"They argued."
"Thomas told her he was done."
Ryan held his breath.
"What did she do?"
Victor looked at him.
"She didn't scream."
"She didn't cry."
"She smiled."
That sentence chilled everyone.
Victor continued.
"She told Thomas something I will never forget."
Ryan waited.
"She said..."
"You always think leaving is an option."
The Video
Carter leaned forward.
"The video."
Victor nodded.
"I had a security camera in my office."
"Thomas didn't know."
"Neither did Evelyn."
Ryan's heart raced.
"Where is it?"
Victor looked at him.
"That is the problem."
"What?"
"I don't have it."
Silence.
Ryan stood.
"Then why are you wasting our time?"
Victor shook his head.
"Because I know who does."
The Hidden Archive
Victor explained.
After Thomas died, Evelyn returned to the office.
She removed documents.
Destroyed evidence.
But she missed one thing.
The backup recording.
"The camera system automatically copied files."
"Where?"
Victor hesitated.
"To a remote server."
Ryan looked at Carter.
"Can we access it?"
Victor shook his head.
"Not anymore."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn found out."
The Hunt Begins
Detective Carter immediately began searching.
The old security company.
The server location.
The backup records.
Everything connected to that night.
Hours passed.
Then one discovery changed everything.
The security company still existed.
But the original owner had retired years ago.
His son took over.
And when police contacted him...
He remembered.
"I know that account."
Carter looked at him.
"What account?"
The man opened an old database.
"Thomas Whitmore."
Ryan's heart stopped.
"Do you still have the files?"
The man hesitated.
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
"The server was wiped."
Ryan felt disappointment.
Then the man continued.
"But..."
Everyone looked at him.
"I found something strange."
The Deleted File
The technician opened an old system log.
A single file appeared.
Deleted.
Recovered.
Modified.
The name:
TW_FINAL_01
Ryan stared.
"What is that?"
The technician looked uncomfortable.
"A video file."
Carter leaned closer.
"When was it last accessed?"
The technician checked.
His expression changed.
"Three weeks ago."
Ryan froze.
"Three weeks?"
"Yes."
"Who accessed it?"
The technician looked at the screen.
Then slowly answered:
"Evelyn Whitmore."
The Woman Still Watching
Ryan felt the air leave his lungs.
Even after everything.
Even after the trial.
Even after being exposed.
Evelyn was still moving pieces.
She had known about the video.
She had searched for it.
She had tried to erase it.
But she failed.
Carter immediately stood.
"Where is she?"
A detective entered the room.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"Evelyn isn't at the detention center."
Ryan's face changed.
"What do you mean?"
The detective looked nervous.
"Her lawyer requested medical evaluation."
"And?"
"She was transferred."
Ryan stared.
"Transferred where?"
The detective answered quietly.
"She disappeared during transport."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Maya grabbed Ryan's arm.
"No."
Detective Carter's expression hardened.
"She planned this."
The Message
An hour later, police found Evelyn's abandoned vehicle.
Inside was only one thing.
A small envelope.
Addressed to:
Ryan
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
Written in Evelyn's handwriting.
You spent your whole life searching for the truth.
Now come find me.
Ryan stared at the message.
Behind the paper was something else.
A photograph.
Old.
Faded.
A picture of Thomas.
Victor.
And Evelyn.
Standing outside the office the night Thomas died.
But something was different.
Someone else was in the background.
Someone Ryan recognized.
Someone impossible.
Someone who was supposed to have been dead for decades.
Ryan whispered:
"No..."
Maya looked at the photograph.
"Who is that?"
Ryan couldn't answer.
Because the person standing behind his father...
Was his mother.
Not Evelyn.
His real mother.
The woman Thomas had loved before Evelyn.
May you like
The woman everyone said had died.
