Chapter 8 â The Other Daughter-in-Law

Chapter 8 â The Other Daughter-in-Law
The name on the police report stared back at Ryan like a word from a language he didn't understand.
Claire Whitmore.
His father's daughter.
His sister.
A person who had supposedly existed...
And then disappeared.
For thirty-five years, Ryan had believed he was an only child.
For thirty-five years, he had believed he knew his own family.
Now, every truth had a shadow behind it.
Detective Carter placed the phone back on the table.
"She's willing to meet."
Ryan looked up.
"Where?"
"She lives two hours outside the city."
"Why so far away?"
Carter hesitated.
"Because she says she never wanted Evelyn to find her."
Ryan felt a cold sensation run through him.
"She was hiding from my mother?"
"That's what she claims."
Maya squeezed Ryan's hand.
"Do you want to go?"
Ryan stared at the evidence spread across the table.
The tapes.
The files.
His father's warnings.
The missing years.
Then he thought about Oliver.
A three-year-old boy who almost lost his life because Evelyn wanted control.
Ryan stood.
"Yes."
"I need to know the truth."
The Woman Who Left
The small house sat at the end of a quiet country road.
No security cameras.
No expensive decorations.
No signs of wealth.
Just a simple white house surrounded by trees.
Ryan found that strange.
Everyone connected to his family seemed to have lived under Evelyn's influence.
Except this woman.
Claire.
Detective Carter knocked.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the door opened.
A woman in her late fifties appeared.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked strangely familiar.
Ryan froze.
He saw it immediately.
The same eyes as his father.
The same slight smile.
The same expression of someone who had carried pain for a very long time.
Claire looked at him.
And whispered:
"You're Thomas's son."
Ryan swallowed.
"Yes."
She looked past him.
At Maya.
At Detective Carter.
Then back at Ryan.
"I wondered when she would finally hurt someone you loved."
Ryan's chest tightened.
"You know about Oliver?"
Claire nodded.
"I know about everything Evelyn does."
The door opened wider.
"Come inside."
The Sister He Never Knew
The living room was small.
Warm.
Normal.
The complete opposite of the Whitmore mansion.
There were photographs everywhere.
Claire's children.
Her grandchildren.
Her life.
A life that existed far away from Evelyn.
Ryan noticed one photograph on the fireplace.
A younger Thomas held a little girl on his shoulders.
Ryan stared.
"That's you."
Claire nodded.
"He was a good father."
Ryan looked down.
"I thought..."
He stopped.
Claire understood.
"You thought he abandoned me."
Ryan looked up.
"How did you know?"
A sad smile crossed her face.
"Because that's what Evelyn wanted you to believe."
The room became quiet.
Claire sat down.
"Your father didn't leave me."
"He fought for me."
Ryan listened.
"He married Evelyn when I was eleven."
"At first, she was wonderful."
"She brought gifts."
"She made promises."
"She told me I finally had the mother I deserved."
Claire's expression changed.
"Then she realized something."
"What?"
"She couldn't control me."
The First Victim
Claire looked toward the window.
"My mother died when I was young."
"Thomas was everything I had."
"When Evelyn entered our lives, she wanted me to love her more than him."
Ryan felt a familiar chill.
"Like she did with me."
Claire nodded.
"Exactly."
"She started small."
"Little comments."
"Your father works too much."
"He doesn't understand you."
"Only I know what you need."
Ryan looked away.
He knew those words.
He had heard them his entire life.
Claire continued.
"When I became a teenager, I started seeing what she was doing."
"She lied."
"She manipulated."
"She created problems and then solved them."
"She wanted everyone dependent on her."
Ryan whispered:
"She needed to be needed."
Claire looked at him.
"Yes."
The Day Claire Disappeared
Ryan leaned forward.
"What happened?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"I was seventeen."
"Your father discovered Evelyn had been secretly reading my journals."
Ryan frowned.
"Why?"
"Because she was looking for anything she could use."
"Anything that made me look unstable."
The words echoed.
The same accusation.
The same pattern.
"She found a page where I wrote that I hated her."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"I was seventeen."
"I was angry."
"I wrote something every teenager writes."
"But Evelyn turned it into evidence."
Ryan's face tightened.
"What evidence?"
"She told Thomas I was mentally disturbed."
"She said I was becoming dangerous."
"She convinced him I needed professional help."
Ryan felt sick.
"The custody papers."
Claire nodded.
"The same kind she prepared for Maya."
The Escape
Claire looked down at her hands.
"Your father didn't believe her."
"That's when Evelyn became afraid."
"Because Thomas finally saw the truth."
Ryan's breathing slowed.
"What did she do?"
Claire's eyes filled with sadness.
"She made him choose."
"Between his daughter..."
"And his marriage."
Ryan already knew the answer.
Or thought he did.
"He chose you."
Claire looked at him.
"No."
The word shocked him.
"He chose me."
Ryan froze.
"What?"
"Your father wanted to leave her."
"He wanted to take me and disappear."
"Then Evelyn threatened him."
Ryan stared.
"With what?"
Claire's voice dropped.
"She said if he left, she would destroy his reputation."
"She had already prepared documents claiming he was unstable."
"She said she would make sure nobody believed him."
Ryan remembered the hidden files.
The fabricated reports.
The fake custody documents.
The pattern.
It had started decades earlier.
The Final Conversation
Claire stood and walked to a cabinet.
She removed a small box.
Inside were letters.
Hundreds of them.
Ryan looked confused.
"What are these?"
"My father wrote them."
"After I left."
Ryan looked at her.
"You left?"
Claire nodded.
"I realized staying would only give Evelyn more power."
"So I disappeared."
"Changed my name."
"Started over."
Ryan stared at the letters.
"Why didn't Dad find you?"
Claire's expression became painful.
"He tried."
"What?"
"He called."
"He wrote."
"But every message went through Evelyn."
Ryan froze.
"She intercepted them?"
Claire nodded.
"She wanted us separated."
"She wanted him alone."
The Truth About Thomas
Claire handed Ryan one final letter.
The date was written nine years earlier.
Only days before Thomas died.
Ryan recognized the handwriting.
His father's.
He opened it.
Claire,
I know you may never receive this.
Your stepmother has spent years convincing everyone you abandoned us.
But I know the truth.
I am sorry I failed you.
I spent too many years believing I could control the damage.
I was wrong.
Evelyn does not stop when she wins.
She needs another person to blame.
If Ryan ever has a family, protect them.
Because she will eventually come for them.
Dad
Ryan couldn't hold the letter anymore.
His hands lowered.
His eyes filled with tears.
His father had known.
He had known everything.
And Ryan had spent years believing he was the problem.
The Warning
Before they left, Claire stopped Ryan at the door.
"There's something else you need to know."
Ryan turned.
"What?"
She looked serious.
"Evelyn doesn't act alone."
Ryan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"She always has someone who helps her."
"Someone who makes the paperwork."
"Someone who cleans up evidence."
"Someone who finds information."
Ryan thought of Vincent Hale.
"The investigator?"
Claire nodded.
"He's one of them."
Ryan felt his stomach drop.
"How many people?"
Claire looked toward the road.
"I don't know."
"But there was one person she trusted more than anyone."
"Someone who helped her for years."
"Someone who knew every secret."
Ryan waited.
"Who?"
Claire's face turned pale.
"Your father's former attorney."
Detective Carter frowned.
"Harold Simmons?"
Claire nodded slowly.
"No."
"Not Harold."
Ryan looked confused.
"Then who?"
Claire whispered:
"The lawyer who helped Evelyn create those custody documents."
A long silence followed.
Then she said the name.
"Victor Whitmore."
Ryan froze.
"Whitmore?"
Claire nodded.
"Your uncle."
As they drove back toward the city, Ryan stared out the window.
Another secret.
Another person hidden from him.
Another piece of a family history built on lies.
His phone suddenly rang.
Detective Carter answered before Ryan could.
A moment later, his expression changed.
"What happened?"
He listened.
Then looked at Ryan.
"Your mother's lawyer just filed an emergency motion."
Ryan's face hardened.
"What kind of motion?"
Carter slowly lowered the phone.
"She is claiming Maya attacked her..."
"And she is requesting immediate custody of Oliver."
Ryan felt every muscle in his body tighten.
After everything.
After the evidence.
After the recordings.
Evelyn was still fighting.
Still trying to take his son.
Still trying to win.
Detective Carter looked at him.
"Ryan..."
May you like
"Your mother just declared war."
