CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CRASH

CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CRASH
Ava's words seemed to stop the air inside the archive.
“He wasn't killed in the crash.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Who?”
“My father.”
“You mean Arthur?”
Ava nodded.
“He was already injured.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What do you remember?”
Ava pressed both hands against her temples.
“It's coming back.”
Ethan crouched beside her.
“Don't force yourself.”
“I need to.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“I remember the night before the crash.”
Three years earlier.
Ava had been staying at the Hale estate.
Arthur had called her shortly after midnight.
His voice sounded frightened.
Not angry.
Not worried.
Terrified.
He told her to come to the library.
When Ava entered, Arthur was standing beside the fireplace.
His shirt was stained with blood.
One hand was pressed against his ribs.
“Arthur?”
He turned.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“What happened?”
“I made a mistake.”
“What kind?”
“I trusted the wrong person.”
Ava remembered the fear in his eyes.
She had never seen him afraid before.
Then the library door opened.
Margaret walked inside.
Ava remembered her expression.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Arthur,” Margaret said.
He turned toward her.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Margaret smiled.
“You knew I would.”
Then another person entered.
A woman.
Tall.
Elegant.
Dark hair.
A black coat.
Ava couldn't see her face clearly.
But she remembered one thing.
The woman's ring.
A black stone.
Exactly like the ring Richard had worn.
Ava opened her eyes.
“There's a woman.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Margaret knew her.”
“Yes.”
“Was Richard there?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Ava shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn looked troubled.
“Try to remember what she said.”
Ava closed her eyes.
The woman's voice returned.
Cold.
Controlled.
“Arthur has become a liability.”
Ava's breath caught.
Ethan whispered:
“Liability?”
“Yes.”
“Who said that?”
“The woman.”
“What happened next?”
“Margaret asked if they could still use the plan.”
“What plan?”
Ava opened her eyes.
“The crash.”
Ethan felt his stomach drop.
“They planned the crash?”
“Yes.”
“Before it happened?”
“Yes.”
“Then who drove the SUV?”
Ava shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Who arranged the second vehicle?”
“I don't know.”
“Who ordered the doctor?”
“I don't know.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“But you know one thing.”
Ava nodded.
“The woman said…”
She swallowed.
“She said the crash had to look accidental.”
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Why?”
“Because if Arthur died naturally, the investigation would be simple.”
“But if it looked like an accident…”
“They could control the evidence.”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Someone planned the entire scene.”
Ava nodded.
“Margaret wasn't in charge.”
“Who was?”
Ava looked at her.
“The woman.”
The investigators arrived before sunrise.
Ethan gave them everything.
The documents.
The recordings.
The prescription.
Clara's letter.
And Ava's recovered memory.
But there was one problem.
The woman had no name.
No photograph.
No official record.
No known connection to Margaret.
Until Evelyn found something.
She spread a stack of corporate records across the table.
“Look.”
Ethan leaned forward.
A shell company.
Northbridge Holdings.
“What is this?”
“Arthur investigated it before he died.”
“What did he find?”
“That it controlled several companies connected to your family's assets.”
Ethan looked at the ownership records.
The listed director was a woman.
Victoria Vale.
Ava's face changed.
“That name…”
“What?”
“I've heard it.”
“Where?”
“Margaret said it once.”
“When?”
“After the crash.”
“What did she say?”
Ava closed her eyes.
“She said Victoria would be angry.”
Ethan stared.
“Victoria was the woman.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I believe so.”
They searched every record they could find.
Victoria Vale was almost invisible.
No public interviews.
No photographs.
No obvious wealth.
But her companies appeared everywhere.
Banks.
Investment funds.
Private medical groups.
Insurance firms.
Real estate trusts.
And one more.
A security company.
Blackstone Protective Services.
Ethan stared.
“Blackstone.”
Evelyn nodded.
“The same company that provided security for the Hale estate.”
“The guards?”
“Yes.”
“Then she had access to the house.”
“Yes.”
“And the cameras.”
“Yes.”
“The security logs.”
“Yes.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“She could erase anything.”
“Exactly.”
Ava whispered:
“She was inside the house.”
But there was something else.
A former employee.
A security technician named Daniel Reed.
He had disappeared shortly after the crash.
Ethan found him living under a different name in another state.
When questioned, Daniel initially refused to speak.
Then Ethan showed him Victoria's photograph.
Daniel's face went pale.
“You shouldn't have found her.”
“Why?”
“Because she knows how to make people disappear.”
“Did she order the crash?”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
Ethan's heart stopped.
“Are you certain?”
“I installed the cameras that night.”
“What did you see?”
“Victoria entered the estate.”
“When?”
“Three hours before the crash.”
“Was Margaret with her?”
“Yes.”
“Richard?”
“No.”
“Then who else?”
Daniel hesitated.
“A doctor.”
“Dr. Cross?”
“Yes.”
Ethan clenched his jaw.
“What were they doing?”
“Preparing Ava.”
“Preparing her for what?”
“The crash.”
Daniel described the plan.
The brakes had been tampered with.
A second vehicle had been positioned.
The road cameras were disabled.
A false emergency call had been prepared.
The doctor had been instructed to arrive after the collision.
And Margaret's job had been simple.
Convince everyone that Ava was unstable.
Then take control of her assets.
Ethan asked:
“Why did Victoria want Ava's trust?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn't.”
“What?”
“She wanted something inside it.”
“What?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why the crash?”
“To force Ava into a legal state where the trust could be accessed.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That makes no sense.”
Daniel looked at her.
“It does if the trust contains something more valuable than money.”
Silence.
“What?”
Daniel swallowed.
“A list.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“The same list Arthur was protecting?”
“Yes.”
“Who is on it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I never saw it.”
“But Victoria did.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Arthur gave her one page.”
Ethan froze.
“Arthur gave Victoria evidence?”
“Not willingly.”
“What happened?”
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“She took it.”
That evening, Evelyn discovered something inside the old trust records.
A hidden reference.
Not to money.
Not to property.
To an archive.
VAULT 7.
Ethan stared at the page.
“Where is it?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Ava suddenly spoke.
“The library.”
“What?”
“The old library.”
“Why?”
“I remember Arthur telling me something.”
“What?”
“He said if anyone came for the trust…”
She closed her eyes.
“…the truth would be behind the third wall.”
Ethan remembered the house.
The library.
Three walls.
One hidden panel.
They returned to the estate.
Behind the third wall, Ethan found a steel door.
No handle.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
Ava touched it.
The door opened.
Inside was a vault.
Folders lined the shelves.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Bank records.
Medical files.
And one large black box.
On the lid:
PROJECT AURORA.
Evelyn stared.
“Arthur never told me about this.”
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a list.
Thirty-two names.
The same names from the original investigation.
But beneath them was a second list.
Five names.
One was Margaret.
One was Jonathan.
One was Richard.
One was Victoria.
The fifth name was covered by a black strip.
Ethan slowly peeled it back.
His face went white.
Ava looked at him.
“Who?”
Ethan couldn't speak.
Evelyn stepped forward.
Then stopped.
The fifth name was:
SOPHIA HALE.
Ava gasped.
“Your sister?”
Ethan stared at the page.
“She was part of it.”
“No.”
Ava shook her head.
“She couldn't be.”
Evelyn looked at the evidence.
“Arthur believed she was.”
Ethan remembered Clara's words.
Sophia had been in the second car.
Margaret had pulled her out.
Richard had taken her.
Everyone had believed she was another victim.
But perhaps she wasn't.
Perhaps she had known.
Perhaps she had helped.
Then a photograph fell from the box.
It showed Victoria.
Margaret.
Richard.
Jonathan.
And Sophia.
Standing together.
Alive.
The date was written on the back.
Six months before the crash.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
His sister had been alive.
And working with them.
Ava whispered:
“She wasn't a victim.”
“No.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“She was one of them.”
Then the lights in the library went out.
Ava gripped Ethan's arm.
Evelyn whispered:
“Someone is here.”
A slow clap came from the darkness.
One.
Two.
Three.
A woman's voice followed.
“You finally found it.”
Ethan turned.
Victoria Vale stepped into the light.
She looked nothing like the monster he had imagined.
She wore a simple black suit.
No weapon.
No guards.
Only a calm smile.
Ethan stepped in front of Ava.
“You.”
Victoria smiled.
“Yes.”
“You planned the crash.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to control Ava.”
“Yes.”
“You used Margaret.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“Margaret used herself.”
Ethan's voice hardened.
“Where is Sophia?”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“That is the question you should have asked first.”
“Where is she?”
Victoria looked toward Ava.
“Alive.”
Ava's face went pale.
“How?”
“Because Sophia was never supposed to die.”
Ethan stared.
“Then where is she?”
Victoria took a step forward.
“She's waiting.”
“For what?”
“For you to discover the truth.”
Ethan's hands tightened.
“What truth?”
Victoria looked at the black box.
“That your father didn't build the trust to protect Ava.”
Silence.
“He built it to hide something.”
“What?”
Victoria smiled.
“Something that belongs to me.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You're lying.”
Victoria looked at her.
“Ask Arthur.”
“He's dead.”
Victoria's smile returned.
“No.”
She pointed toward the hidden vault.
“Arthur left something else behind.”
Ethan looked around.
“What?”
Victoria whispered:
“A recording.”
Then she walked backward into the darkness.
“Find it.”
“Why?”
Her voice echoed through the library.
“Because when you hear it…”
A pause.
“…you'll finally understand why Margaret was never the most dangerous woman in this family.”
The door slammed.
Ethan turned toward the vault.
A tiny red light had appeared beneath the black box.
A recording device.
He pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Arthur's voice emerged.
“If you're hearing this…”
A pause.
“…then Victoria has already found you.”
Ethan froze.
Arthur continued.
“And there is something I never told my son.”
The recording crackled.
“I did not die because of the crash.”
Ava covered her mouth.
Arthur's voice became quieter.
“I died because I refused to give them the name of the woman who truly owns the trust.”
The recording stopped.
Ethan stared at the darkness.
Then a final sentence appeared on the vault's screen.
THE TRUE OWNER IS ALIVE.
And beneath it—
A name.
May you like
AVA HALE.
