Chapter 3: The Courtroom in the Nursery
The woman in the suit turned slightly toward Evelyn.
âDo you understand what Judge Vance does for a living?â
Evelyn forced a laugh.
âFamily court. Irrelevant paperworkââ
âFederal oversight on custody trafficking cases,â the woman cut in sharply.
Silence dropped again.
Julia shifted slightly in bed, sweat on her forehead, but her voice steadied.
âI didnât tell anyone,â she said quietly. âI wanted to be treated like a normal mother.â
Her husband looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time.
âYou⊠you never told me your mother wasââ
âI wanted to be loved for me,â Julia said.
A beat.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
âBut you didnât even give me that chance.â
The administrator raised her hand.
âNewborn transfer attempt is now under investigation. All parties remain in the room.â
Evelynâs composure finally cracked.
âThis is ridiculous! I am his mother! I have rights!â
The woman in the suit turned the tablet slightly.
âNot overruled rights.â
She pressed a button.
A new file opened.
Evelyn Vance.
And beneath itâ
Multiple flagged custody interference attempts across three hospitals.
Evelynâs face went pale.
Because she realized something.
This wasnât the first time.
It was just the first time she had been caught in the wrong room.
