Chapter 2: The Truth They Never Asked About

Chapter 2: The Truth They Never Asked About
Silence swallowed the living room.
The young man, Ethan, stared at the older gentleman in disbelief.
"...Your daughter?"
The distinguished man adjusted the cuffs of his dark coat without taking his eyes off Ethan.
"My name is Richard Ashford."
The color drained from Ethan's mother's face.
She knew that name.
Richard Ashford was one of the most respected attorneys in the state, the founder of Ashford Legal Group, and the man who had spent three decades protecting families from abuse and corruption. His reputation was built on one principle:
No one was above the law.
Richard walked directly to his daughter.
His stern expression softened the moment he saw the red handprint on her cheek.
"What happened?"
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"He slapped me."
Richard gently lifted her chin.
"And before that?"
She hesitated.
"They've been humiliating me for months."
His jaw tightened.
His gaze shifted toward Ethan's mother.
"You insulted my daughter?"
The older woman folded her arms.
"She married beneath our standards."
Richard nodded once.
"So you admit it."
"I have nothing to hide."
One of the police officers quietly activated his body camera.
Richard looked at Ethan.
"Did you strike your wife?"
Ethan swallowed.
"It was just one slap."
The room became colder.
Richard's voice remained calm.
"One slap is still assault."
The officer stepped forward.
"Sir, based on the victim's statement and visible injuries, we'd like to ask you a few questions."
Ethan finally realized the situation was no longer under his control.
He reached toward Olivia.
"Baby... please..."
She stepped back.
"No."
For the first time since their marriage, she looked at him without fear.
"I'm done protecting you."
Richard placed an arm around his daughter's shoulders.
"Pack what belongs to you."
"I already have."
She walked upstairs, carrying only one suitcase she had secretly prepared weeks earlier.
She had been hoping she would never need it.
Tonight proved she had.
When she returned downstairs, Richard took the suitcase from her.
Without another word, father and daughter walked toward the front door.
Behind them, Ethan shouted,
"Olivia! Don't leave me!"
She paused.
Not because she was reconsidering.
Because she wanted him to hear her final answer.
"I didn't leave our marriage today."
"You abandoned it the moment you chose your mother's cruelty over your wife's dignity."
The front door closed behind her.

And for the first time in years...
She felt free.
