Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Footage

Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Footage

The first recording was dated one hundred and twelve days earlier.

I clicked play.

The kitchen appeared on the screen.

Mom sat quietly at the table, trying to butter a piece of toast with her weak right hand.

Vanessa walked in.

Without warning, she snatched the plate away.

"You haven't earned breakfast."

My mother lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

There was nothing to apologize for.

The next video was worse.

Vanessa locked my mother's bedroom door from the outside.

"You can come out when you stop pretending to be helpless."

Then came another.

And another.

Every day revealed something darker.

She hid Mom's medication.

She unplugged her wheelchair charger.

She mocked her speech after the stroke.

Sometimes she simply left her alone for hours.

Only one person consistently appeared beside my mother.

Elena.

She quietly helped Mom eat.

Read to her.

Changed her bandages.

Sat beside her when she cried.

Several times, Vanessa screamed at Elena for "spoiling the old woman."

Each time, Elena answered with the same calm words.

"She deserves kindness."

I felt sick.

Then I opened the final recording.

It showed exactly what had happened before I walked through the front door.

Vanessa struck my mother with the wooden spoon.

Elena stepped between them.

Vanessa hit Elena instead.

Mom screamed.

Seconds later...

My suitcase hit the foyer floor.

Everything happened exactly as I remembered.

Except now...

Every second was preserved forever.
