Chapter 3: The Blue Sewing Box

Chapter 3: The Blue Sewing Box
The next morning, I returned to the house with two detectives.
While they photographed the rooms, I went upstairs to my mother's bedroom.
Inside the closet sat an old blue sewing box.
The same one my grandmother had once used.
I opened it.
Instead of thread and needles...
There was a stack of envelopes.
Each one was dated.
Each one written in my mother's careful handwriting.
To Daniel.
The first letter began:
"If you're reading this, Elena finally convinced you to look."
My hands trembled.
Inside were pages documenting every incident.
Dates.
Times.
Bruises.
Missing medication.
Threats.
One note read:
"Vanessa said if I tell you, she'll send Elena away and put me in a nursing home where no one will believe me."
Another contained photographs Elena had secretly taken of the injuries.
The last envelope held something unexpected.
A handwritten letter from Elena.
"Mr. Carter,
I'm sorry for going against your wife's instructions.
Your mother begged me not to tell you because she didn't want to distract you while you were overseas.
But I promised your father years ago that if anything ever happened to him, I would protect her as if she were my own family.
I couldn't break that promise.
Whatever happens to me after this... it was worth it."

I had to stop reading.
The tears blurred every word.
