Chapter 1: The Choice I Made

Chapter 1: The Choice I Made

I looked at my mother and my younger sister without a trace of anger on my face.

Somehow, disappointment hurt more.

Then I spoke.

"If my wife has been serving this house alone while the two of you watched... then neither of you is welcome in it anymore."

The words landed like thunder.

My mother's teacup rattled against its saucer.

"What did you just say?"

"You heard me."

Emily lifted her head from my shoulder.

"Please... don't fight because of me."

I gently squeezed her hand.

"This isn't because of you."

"It's because I failed to see how exhausted you've been."

I carried Leo upstairs while Emily followed behind me.

His fever was high enough that we decided not to wait.

Within minutes, we were driving to the emergency room.

The whole ride, Leo cried softly in the back seat while Emily fought to stay awake.

"You should have called me," I whispered.

She stared through the window.

"I wanted to."

"But every time we talked, your mother was standing nearby."

"She'd smile while you were on speaker and tell you everything was under control."

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"And afterward?"

Emily looked down.

"She'd tell me not to make your work harder."

"She said a good wife handles everything quietly."

I felt my chest tighten with guilt.

Five days.

She had carried everything for five days.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she had been made to believe asking for help was selfish.

The doctor examined Leo and smiled reassuringly.

"It's a viral infection."

"He's going to be okay."

Relief washed over both of us.

As Leo slept peacefully in the hospital bed, I finally looked at Emily.

"When was the last time you slept?"

She laughed weakly.

"I honestly don't remember."

That answer hurt more than I expected.

Because I realized something.

My wife wasn't asking for someone to rescue her.

She had only been asking for someone to care enough to notice.

May you like

And somehow...

The people I trusted most had chosen not to.
