Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out

Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out
The next morning, we returned home.
My mother and sister were still there.
Suitcases packed.
Expressions cold.
My mother stood first.
"So, are you ready to apologize?"
I almost smiled.
"No."
"I've spent the entire night thinking."
"And I've realized something."
She folded her arms.
"What?"
"I've been thanking the wrong person."
She frowned.
"For years, I thanked you for helping my family."
I turned toward Emily.
"But she was the one holding everything together."
I walked into my home office and opened my laptop.
"I also checked the security cameras."
Both of their faces changed instantly.
Emily looked surprised.
"You... watched them?"
I nodded.
Every camera told the same story.
Emily feeding Leo while folding laundry.
Emily carrying groceries alone.
Emily cleaning after everyone.
My mother watching television.
My sister scrolling through social media.
Hour after hour.
Day after day.
Then came the moment that broke my heart.
Leo stood beside the couch holding a storybook.
"Grandma..."
He smiled.
"Will you read with me?"
Without looking up from her tablet, my mother answered,
"Go ask your mother."
The little boy quietly walked away.
No anger.
No tears.
Just disappointment.
I closed the laptop.
Silence filled the room.
My mother finally spoke.
"We were guests."
I stared at her.
"Guests help."
"Strangers help."
"You lived here for free while my wife served all of you."
My sister suddenly exploded.
"Emily made us look bad!"
Emily's eyes widened.
"I never complained."
"No," I answered.
"She protected you."
"And you rewarded her with indifference."
Neither of them had another excuse.
Within an hour, they packed the rest of their belongings.
As they reached the front door, my mother stopped.
"You'll choose her over your own mother?"
I answered calmly.
"The day I married Emily..."
"I promised before God that she and our children would become my first responsibility."
"I intend to keep that promise."
She lowered her eyes.

For the first time...
She understood she could no longer control my choices.
